    > I also heard that TCM has to have that film in their library in order to air it.

It is my understanding that the TCM Library consists now of only a few films which were recently restored. The original library amassed by Mr. Turner was divorced from TCM when Time-Warner purchased it.

TCM now has to rent all of the movies it airs. Some owners will allow airing of all of their movies which have been converted to digital format. Some will allow only part of their library.

I believe the list of available movies is changing constantly as owners convert movies to digital and owners are releasing movies previously restricted or restricting movies it previously rented.

  2. I believe it is truly an unfortunate situation.

I have read that channels within the Disney-ABC Television Group have long-term exclusive rights to air the animated works. These licenses were granted in order to gain financing at the lowest possible interest rate because of the assumption that being the only source for Disney animation would assure success of the channels. The lower risk of default translating into lower interest rates meant savings of tens of millions of dollars for the corporation.

It is sad when dollars mean more than artistic and cultural values but that is the state of the world. :(

    > Whew, SansFin, I didn't realized that it was such an ordeal.

I am truly very sorry that I did not stop to think that this was putting you in the middle. I apologize with all my heart.

    > I don't think any of us expect to get paid for what we share.

I do not know how long it took me to cross-reference Martin Scorsese's filmography with entries in our database. I was happy to do it without prompting as a way to welcome a new poster and to give them hope that those movies might air again.

The reference to payment for further research was an outburst against what I view as extremely boorish behaviour by a poster who would rather continuously complain in many threads about the lack of modern movies on TCM rather than buy inexpensive DVDs. I did not intend to suggest I was actually offering services requiring compensation.

    > I don't think that those of us who record TCM movies do it because we are cheapskates, and unwilling to purchase a movie that we enjoy.

I greatly prefer to record movies as it allows the movie to begin immediately after loading with no time wasted on studio logos. Many commercial DVDs have also advertising which must be navigated past or watched before the movie can begin.

The ratio between recorded movies vs purchased movies in our collection is well over twenty-to-one. We clearly prefer to record a movie but we acknowledge that some movies we like are so modern that they are usually broadcast only on premium channels or it is a foreign movie which is unlikely to ever air here.

    > Anyway, sorry if I offended you by suggesting that you might be able & willing to offer additional info.

I must say again how very sorry I am to have put you into the middle of this. Your instincts were correct and I am very happy to do what I can for most posters. It is unfortunate circumstance that this instance involved a poster I have come to detest.

    > I wish I was as young as you! The oldsters here had to sit (or get up to change the television ON the televion!!) the Chia commercials AND the Chia song!

I was in United States only occasionally before 2008 and watched little television when I was here. I have been immersed in many forms of American Pop culture in the time since I have moved here but the Chia Pets escaped me.

I have found the original commercial on YouTube. I find the song catchy but I find it easy to understand how repeated play of it could be irritating and it could become an earwig.

  5. I know I saw the movie when it was first released. I could surely find the date, time and place if I searched my journals of the year.

The movie made so little impression on me that I do not remember a single thing about it and formed no lasting opinion.

It is possible that it would all come back to me if I began to watch it again.

I am not interested in watching it as few movies have left no impression on me either good or bad and so it is a hole in my life and I have no desire to waste more time on such a non-entity.

I have always wondered about that sentiment. Does that mean that if I do not study history I can recreate the Roaring Twenties or resurrect the elegance of Nineteenth Century Tsarist St. Petersburg?

I would search far and wide for a way to unlearn things if that were true.

    > You think God dictates weather patterns?

I have often heard it said that God must really hate trailer houses because they are the target of choice of tornadoes.

I have heard scientists answer the question: "What will the weather be like a month from today?" by saying: "Only God knows".

I do not know how it associates when my esso said this morning that there was never weather like this when there was a Republican President.

  8. I believe you are referring to: *Cash on Demand* (1961).

The stars listed for: *The Snorkel* (1958) are: Peter Van Eyck, Betta St. John, Mandy Miller and Gregoire Aslan. I recognize the names as being actors but I do not know their work.

I believe he is so very dignified that it would need a very special occasion for him to appear in costume.

It would be great fun to have Ben Mankiewicz appear in period clothes and to have a period backdrop for some of the movies he introduces. This could be very effective for movie series he introduces on Saturdays. I suggest this now because the Tarzan series is over. I believe it would be a bit much to see him in a loincloth.

  10. I have watched only the first few minutes and I have high hopes for it because I like complex caper movies. I do not know any of the actors well but the description in the guide made it sound as if it were worth recording for when I have time to watch it.

    > I sometimes skip primaries or off year elections if nothing important is on the ballot, but the only time I didnt vote for president was the year of Carter/Ford as I didnt like either candidate and wouldnt vote for either......

We had a choice of: "none of the candidates". When the majority voted that way there had to be a new election with new candidates.

    > What other "services" do you provide for a fee, SansFin?

That is a terrible thing to ask me because it makes me ache to tell a dozen wonderful jokes which come to me mind but I can not post them in a public forum!

    > (You don't sell Chia Pets, do you SansFin?)

I had to Google what that is. I do not sell them but I want one now.

    > I'm planning on offering for sale a line of specially made Voodoo Doll caricatures of all your favourite TCM Message Board characters such as: SansFin, Lzcutter, Hibi, TopBilled, and many others...

My likeness is trademarked and you must pay a licensing fee of twenty million dollars in advance and royalties of 49% of the sale price for each doll. Hating me comes at a heavy price and I prefer cash in small bills.

    > Pins cost extra.

If the likeness is true then you will need nails to go through my thick hide! :)

    > I don't believe this is the proper forum to discuss the cost to access the information in your database.

    > Basically, you are using this board to inform others that your services can be bought for a price.

I am not cheap but I can be bought.

I freely share the information in our database when and where I can. I have done that in this thread as well as several times in the past.

What I will do not freely is spend hours searching through individual schedules for information when the person who wants it has injected their crusade into several threads and steadfastly maintains a "I want what I want when and where I want it and alternatives are not acceptable" attitude.

I have not kept track of the numbering of the "rules of the board" proffered by others but one must be: "expect even simple threads to be taken off-topic".

I welcome again MerryPickford to the board and I hope they enjoy TCM's eclectic mixture of genres and eras.

  14. > {quote:title=Stephan55 wrote:}{quote}Mike00,

    > perhaps SansFin or someone else can come up with the precise viewing times, if you require that information...

I try very hard to help those needing relevant information about previous airings of movies as far as I am able using a database we have created of movies scheduled by TCM. I am limited in that we lack access to most schedules older than August of 2005. I am limited also in that our database is only for a listing of movies and we neither compile nor maintain information regarding time, date or frequency.

I was able to provide the list I posted by a simple search of our database. I did so in hopes that it will give hope to the original poster that they might see those films on TCM in the future because being on a previous schedule indicates that the film is available for airing by TCM and there are no overt problems of format, rights or other issues which prevent some movies from being shown.

To provide exact information regarding when a particular movie was last scheduled would require searching individual months' schedules. I have done that in the past when a poster has asked for the information for a reasonable purpose. I am happy to help when and where I am able.

I see no point to doing that in this case. There is no obvious rotation of movies which could be used to predict when a movie might air in the future based on when it last aired. The length of time since the last airing could not be used as a basis for a reasonable appeal to the programmers to schedule them again because they are so very far out of the mainstream of TCM's content and purpose and they will surely air only as part of special themes or promotions for many years to come.

I would be willing to perform a search of the schedules to find exact dates and times at which the movies in question were scheduled but I doubt that any person who will not buy a few cheap DVDs from Wal-Mart would be willing to pay the fair rate for such work.

  15. > {quote:title=Swithin wrote:}{quote}

    > it has hijacked comments about the unimaginative programming for Oscar time.

I believe it takes a great deal of imagination and hard work to create a schedule with the limitations that the movies must have a connection to an Oscar, must have been converted by the copyright owner into digital format, must be available at a reasonable cost and should not be ones which are aired with great frequency.

I admit I am not as thrilled with the schedule as I am with the December and January schedules but I feel it is a solid schedule in a good format and the programmers are to be thanked and congratulated for their efforts.

    > No drapes?

No. There is a long table such as one finds in a school cafeteria. Sitting on it are three things much like large cardboard boxes with the top and back missing to make a little cubical. They are white and have a flag insignia on the sides and front. He said there are pens and instructions of how to fill in the boxes inside it.

It is such a small ward that two precinct voting stations are present in the same gymnasium. There was only one other person voting in the precinct when we entered and two more were entering as we left. The news is reporting that local turnout is very heavy this year.

  17. We have returned from the voting station. Capuchin offered to let me mark his ballot since we are alike in our thinking. I believe he wanted only to get me into a booth. :) It is sad to say there were no booths. There were cardboard partitions between places at a long table and I had to stay behind a line on the floor away from those who were voting.

It is a strange feeling for me to not vote.

  18. It is far past time when I can alter or delete the contents of my previous post. I can only take this moment to rescind it.

I understand that some people are not at all times comfortable with foreign movies, some people do not like watching movies on YouTube and that most people do not share my particular tastes or sense of humor. I had hoped in spite of those circumstances to awaken at least a little curiosity in a few people.

I did not mean for such a long-active and lively thread to be brought to such a screeching halt because people are reluctant to post after what I presented.
