I thank you for your kind words. I know my writing varies wildly and that at times I write as if I am a peasant child and at other times as if I am officious nerd. I learned to understand and speak English in school. My exposure to English speakers and my only opportunities to practice then were ex-pat professors, sailors at the port and diplomats who visited the hotel where my father worked. I believe this has made my word choices very schizophrenic.
I know there is still much for me to learn in writing and I thank all here for being patient with me!

I can not speak of -R longevity. My esso used +R to make DVDs to play as background noise while he is working. They are all in six-hour recording mode and contain four or five movies. The oldest was made in 2007. It has been played in full nearly every week. I have watched parts of it from time to time and I see no difference between it and a new recording at the same speed.
I believe the shift from VCR to DVD was accelerated due to the lower cost of manufacturing a DVD player. The VCR is a mechanical nightmare. The DVD uses mechanisms common to all CD players and has few moving parts. Manufacturers were happy to separate themselves as quickly as possible from the complex to the simple.

I love the movie!
There are many wicked little moments all through it and Shep is such a lovable buffoon.
Philippe Clay singing Le noy? assassin? paroles was an inspired choice for the type of entertainment a "Zodiac Club" might offer.
Elsa Lanchester's cackle as Merle runs from the nightclub is absolutely perfect!
I laugh each time Shep tries to explain about Gillian powers to his ex-fiance:
Merle: A witch?
Shep: Yes!
Merle: Shep, you just never learned to spell.
It is obvious that not all the cats have four feet!

I have noticed many times that posters take exception to a new thread being started when there is an existing thread of a closely associated topic. I have also wondered why some posters feel the need to start a dozen threads concerning a particular star or movie.
I believe it may be best to have this thread so that those discussions on this matter will not drift suspect threads away from their original topic.
My personal belief is that a new thread is warranted when:
1) The original thread has drifted far away from its Subject.
2) There is a desire to discuss an aspect which is neither covered in the original post of an existing thread nor is being explored there.
3) There is an increasing level of political or racial comments to such an extent that the thread might soon be closed by the moderators.
4) A similar thread has dropped to the fourth page or has not had a cogent post within the last twenty-one days.
I wish to use the current SUTS threads as an example with the understanding that they are only an example and I do not wish to solely transfer that debate to this thread:
I feel that the post containing the schedule was proper as a separate thread as it could engender discussion of the selection of movies for each star while the original thread which merely listed the honorees and engendered discussions of those stars and the methodology of selecting those to so honor.
It is also becoming a tradition that that poster favors us by doing all of the hard work to research and format the information for unreleased schedules. I often do not comment in those threads because I have little to add. I do greatly appreciate their efforts.
I believe the most grievous fault in this issue is that posters often chose an overly-broad Subject when their discussion is focused on one narrow aspect. It is due to that that there will at times appear to be several threads on the same matter when the discussions are truly disparate.
I believe there would be less concern over duplication of threads in my example if they had been named:
1) Speculation on the next SUTS selections.
2) The stars being honored in SUTS.
3) The movies selected for SUTS.
I will add the caveat that my bias in this issue is due to my innate preference to segregate things into their own separate sections with very little or no overlap between categories.
I do not wish to give the impression that I am advocating Garbo Thread #1,294 or TCM is showing trash #2,547,216.3
I do believe that there is room on this board to allow separate threads on different aspects of the same general topic. This is especially true since the green-initiatives mandate that all forums such as these use only recycled electrons.

It is an embarrassment to be so tired you can not dance at a wedding!
The man who was spinning my cousin tripped over his own big feet and she fell hard. She limped off and then claimed that she was fine. She was a wonderful dancer and she was often in the center. She asked if I wished to do some steps with her. I was so tired that I asked her to do them with another person. I believe it was more than an hour later that the dance ended.
It was then that she asked to be taken to a hospital. X-Rays showed that she had danced many times with two bones in her left foot broken.
She said she did it because you can not not dance at a wedding!

I have never since claimed I was so tired I could not dance.

I believe this is a legitimate connection to history as elements of the form has been traced to nearly 3000 B.C.:
Lean and limber young men in their sharp tunics displaying their agility, timing, control and strong loins has very deep roots.

These traditions have changed very little over the years.
I remember doing what is shown at 4:53 when I was of that age:

It was empty also when I posted.
Your mention of Toshiro Mifune reminded me that I wished to look in the database for some information concerning him. It was then that I noticed that one of the movies had a schedule notice under the title. I looked at other movies in which he appeared and there were schedule notices on some of them also. That is when I posted. I had not as yet looked at all of his movies or at the movies of other actors who were also in the movies I found. That is why I stated that I: "believe" he was scheduled.

I have found these schedule notations on movie pages:
Drunken Angel (1948) Thursday, August 9 @ 06:00 AM (ET)
Rashomon (1950) Thursday, August 9 @ 07:45 AM (ET)
The Seven Samurai (1954) Thursday, August 9 @ 09:15 AM (ET)
Throne of Blood (1961) Thursday, August 9 @ 12:45 PM (ET)
Yojimbo (1961) Thursday, August 9 @ 02:45 PM (ET)
Red Beard (1966) Thursday, August 9 @ 04:45 PM (ET)
Samurai 1: Musashi Miyamoto (1955) Thursday, August 9 @ 08:00 PM (ET)
Duel at Ichijoji Temple (1955) Thursday, August 9 @ 09:45 PM (ET)
??
Rebellion (1967) Thursday, August 9 @ 01:45 AM (ET)
Muhomatsu, the Rickshaw Man (1958) Thursday, August 9 @ 04:00 AM (ET)
It is sad to say that not scheduled yet are:
The Hidden Fortress (1958)
Life of Oharu 1964)
I will wait and hope.

I believe he is scheduled for August 9th.

I really grooved to *Boston **** Booked on Suspicion* (1945)! I had not seen it before.
The next things I wish to watch are:
*Bell, Book and Candle* (1959) It is one of my favorite movies. It is a romantic comedy with wicked twists and black humor. The cats are at their best and are very entertaining and the four-footed one is wonderful also!
*A Lady Of Chance* (1928) It is very good if it is the movie I am remembering and it will be a new experience if I am confusing it with another movie of Norma Shearer.

I believe I was five or six years old then.
I made two or three a year when I was in my teens. It is sad to say that they were always disasters because I could not spend the time on them that they truly required. Mother always chose the best side of the best one to face upwards in the basket when we took them to be blessed. All of my other ones were always in the bottom of the basket.

The movie companies are wishing to confuse the issue. Making an archival copy of purchased physical media has been a fair use since the days of Edison cylinder recordings.
> As for section 1201(2) that you quoted, well, there are a hundred websites,e-tailors,vendors,sellers,including Amazon, and e-bay that sell those "illigal" devices,so that either there are caveats in the law or the law has no teeth, cuz if it did then those devices wouldn't be any more available on the internet than any other illigal product. Can you buy "pot" from Amazon??,or e-bay?? or any other seller on the net?? no of course not. It's illigal.
It is legal to create or sell them in the country of origin. The difference from pot is that ownership of them is not illegal here. It is only creation and distribution which is illegal here.
I am reminded of a law of similar confusion. In one state it is a misdemeanor to possess a small quantity of pot. A police officer will often only confiscate it and write a ticket. It is a felony to buy it, grow it, steal it or receive it as a gift. It is a felony also to pick it up if found because that is interfering with a controlled substance. How does it make sense that it is a misdemeanor to have a thing when it is a felony to acquire it?
> A while back in another forum i read a post from a fellow who printed out the IIRC,"Terms Of Contract"??? that every person accepts whenever he/she purchases a DVD disc.
I believe that under Federal Law it is that any abridgment of your rights requires informed consent and unambiguous agreement. The courts have held that the consumer must make a deliberate act to agree with terms and that the act of a simple purchase is not sufficient to denote acceptance of a contract. That is why software companies have an "I have read the user agreement and agree with it" button which must be selected prior to installation of their software.

You may download the DCMA as enacted at:
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/PLAW-105publ304/pdf/PLAW-105publ304.pdf
Section 1201 states:
"(2) No person shall manufacture, import, offer to the public, provide, or otherwise traffic in any technology, product, service, device, component, or part thereof, that?
(A) is primarily designed or produced for the purpose of circumventing a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title;" and so forth.
It also states:
"© OTHER RIGHTS, ETC., NOT AFFECTED.?(1) Nothing in this section shall affect rights, remedies, limitations, or defenses to copyright infringement, including fair use, under this title."
Therefore it is legal for a person to make an archival copy of copyrighted work under the fair use doctrine while it is illegal to create or distribute a method which allows people to make those copies.
The Wikipedia entry for Judge Susan Yvonne Illston includes her decision in 321 Studios v. Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios, Inc and it states in plain language:
"despite finding that the software violated Federal law, she ruled that copies made by consumers (of their own legally purchased DVDs) were, in fact, legal."

> And these Eggs are prepared around Easter Only? So it would sort of be 'understood' for a man (or a 'stranger') to definately know, NOT to visit any homes, @ these times, So as not to disrupt the delicate balance of preparing these Eggs.
I know of them being prepared only the week before Easter. They were done late in the evening when one did not expect visitors. The men knew to not intrude for any reason. It was an in-or-out decision for me each night. If I was not to be there from beginning to end I could not be there are all.
I remember that I was disappointed when I was given a quail's egg to do. It was much smaller than the goose egg my mother was doing and the designs on a quail's egg are simple ones and do not have many colors. I was also disappointed that it was so much work and that I made many mistakes. I believe my fingers would have fallen off and I would have been driven crazy had I attempted a goose egg.

Our television, DVR and one DVD recorder all set their time from an external authoritative source. None of them agree.
The television channels also do not agree. It is not possible here to watch the end of a program on Channel 13 and the first minutes of a program immediately following on Channel 2.
"The man with one watch always knows what time it is. The man with two watches is never sure."

>> But the information that you can't copy store bought DVDs is false.
> But is it legal?
It is my understanding that the law allows a person to make an archival copy of any physical media they purchase and to retain and use it while they own the original.
I believe it is illegal to make a copy of movies which are rented or to make a copy and then transfer ownership of the original.
I know of people who make a copy of every DVD they purchase so they can then watch the movies and not have to endure the commercials some companies put on the disc. I understand this as I have one DVD which does not allow the movie to play until the commercials are over and you can not use the Stop->Menu bypass or use greater than 2x to fast-forward through them.

There is a precious picture book titled: Tusk, Tusk written by David McKee.
It tells that long ago all elephants were either black or white. Each color thought they were better than the other. The peace-loving ones ran off into the woods when war between the colors began. All the fighters were killed and there were no elephants seen for many years. The descendants of the peace-loving ones came out of the woods and they were all gray! They have since lived in peace. The last line of the book is: "But recently the little ears and the big ears have been giving each other funny looks."

It feels very odd watching strangers make them and it does not seem right that a man makes them. That he is a priest reduces the discomfort factor only a little.
A pysanka is meant to ward off evil in the house. Only the women of the house were to be in the room when they were being made. There were never any visitors nor men. Any interruption meant that the kindness, goodness and purity flowing into them was disrupted. You could not talk of other things as the eggs might hear it and curse you for being a gossip!

You need a reason to party? That seems un-American.

Such news does not dishearten me or change the facts.
It feels very odd for me to be lecturing on English and yet I feel compelled to state that "promoting" does not equal "removing all else".
A local hospital is currently promoting its unit for brain surgery. That does not mean they are neglecting patients in other wards or that they will stop the current expansions of their cardiac care and neo-natal units.
Retail stores often promote one clothing line or brand. They do not empty their stores of all other products.
I will become concerned if or when TCM begins actually airing a greater number of modern movies than older ones.

> {quote:title=MissGoddess wrote:}{quote}Wow, that's a new one to me. I had no idea once sold that authors had rights over films ever again. It's strange considering how little say they got in how the films were made.
I believe they were able to demand such rights because of the nature of media at the time. It was well known that books could remain in print for decades while movies were considered show-and-throw.

I thank you for your kind words. Is repeating yourself better or worse than talking to yourself?

I thank you for your kind words. I hoped the discussions would move here to reduce the thread drift in other threads.
