Are you referring to the picture I posted in another thread on this topic, sir?

Why is it considered appropriate to portray women's amplitudes in any place and at any time when even the smallest portrayal of a man's longitude is considered offensive?

    >> I believe many people would be willing to pay for such premium channels.

The average viewer is paying less than three dollars a year to TCM.

    >> TCM programming is first and foremost a business decision and we must respect that they are providing the best they can as it is in their best interest to do so.

    > No they're not. They're providing only just enough within their budget. You are correct, they are first a business. But *respect* them? Hah, I haven't respected anything since I was six years old.

I believe the channel would have been dead within a year if the new owners had decreed 'just-enough-to-get-by' programming.

I did not mean 'respect' as is: esteem, admire or show reverence. I meant it as: acknowledge that they are within their rights and there is not a thing we can do about it.

    >> Any person who wishes programming decisions to be based on other criteria should petition their local PBS station as they are the charity broadcasters.

    > Not really. The PBS stations don't listen anymore than Time Warner does.

PBS has a mandate to accommodate the public. They are required by law to listen to programming suggestions which is more than is required of any commercial broadcaster.

    > So it is healthy to vent here. If not here, where?

Goldfish. A scientific study has shown that yelling at pet fish has a more therapeutic effect than writing a letter. I believe it is because at the end you are distracted by their serenity and when you are finished with a letter you retain a level of frustration for you know that it will do no good.

This is understood to be in the absence of readily available windmills. ;)

    > I could love a man like that, even with the dust of 3,000 years all over him.

I am reminded that bottles of fine wine are always covered with dust. It has been wisely said that men are like grapes: you must stomp on them and then keep them in the dark for a long time before they are suitable to have with dinner.

  4. This is what I am happy to see on the schedule:

    Ransom! (1956)

The Courtship Of Eddie's Father (1963)

    Man's Favorite Sport? (1964)

    Granny Get Your Gun (1940)

    The Vintage (1957)

    My Fair Lady (1964)

    Sullivan's Travels (1941)

    The Palm Beach Story (1942)

    The Onion Field (1979)

    The Ladykillers (1955)

    The Lavender Hill Mob (1951)

    Green Mansions (1959)

    Love In The Afternoon (1957)

They Came To Rob Las Vegas (1969)

    The Thief of Bagdad (1940)

    Rodan (1957)

Boston **** Booked on Suspicion (1945)

The Bridge On The River Kwai (1957)

    Down to Earth (1947)

    Bell, Book and Candle (1959)

    The Big Steal (1949)

    Where Danger Lives (1950)

    Angels Wash Their Faces (1939)

It is very nice to see so many wonderful movies airing in one week.

I am wondering if any other person has the same list.

  5. TCM must maintain a certain level of viewership in order to remain on satellite and cable systems. I trust TCM programmers are balancing what they chose to air so that it will appeal to the greatest number of lovers of not-new movies.

I am sure there are viewers who wish TCM would air silent movies only. Such a shift would likely result in a loss of viewership so substantial that TCM would be dropped by a large number of carriers and they would not be able to provide any movies to a large part of the population. I believe if they choose to air only movies released prior to 1963 then its death would be inevitable albeit slower.

I wish TCM could split into separate channels such as Silents, Westerns, Noir and other genres in the same manner as the Encore suite. I believe many people would be willing to pay for such premium channels.

I do not know what effect people think it will have to post criticisms. TCM programming is first and foremost a business decision and we must respect that they are providing the best they can as it is in their best interest to do so. Any person who wishes programming decisions to be based on other criteria should petition their local PBS station as they are the charity broadcasters.

  6. I wish Yul Brynner had been in *Anna and the King of Siam* (1946). I like Rex Harrison very much and yet I think Yul Brynner could have added much to the drama. The only part of *The King and I* (1956) which I like is the dancing scene. Which version had the scene where the local girls thought her dress was shaped in that way because she was shaped in that way?

I have not yet seen *The Double Man* (1967). I thank you for the recommendation. I had planned to watch it. I am now looking forward to it with greater anticipation.

  7. The Svyato-Preobrazhenskiy Cathedral in Odessa:

    tour-6.jpg

The cathedral was built in 1794. It was reduced to its foundations by the Soviet in 1936 to the extent that there was no stone upon another stone. I felt always the space was somehow special long before I knew the cathedral had stood there. It has been rebuilt recently.

I believe this is worth seeing even although I can find no small image of it:

  8. I like Yul Brynner very much and I am happy they are airing tonight's movies.

I have seen only parts of *Triple Cross* (1967) and I have waited long to see all of it.

My favorites movies in which he stars are:

    *Anastasia* (1956)

    *The Journey* (1959)

    *The Buccaneer* (1958)

It is odd to see him with hair in the last one! :)

    > I met many real surf and beach girls back then. While they might look good in a bikini, they all seemed to know their commercial worth,

I have seen a poster which shows a beautiful young girl in a bikini who is hugging a balding, overweight man. The caption of the poster is: "Guess which one is a multi-millionaire".

The city where I grew up has many beaches. It is common for girls to go topless at any of them. It is a truism that the less one wears the more they are there to be seen and they are not interested in connecting then and there. They are wishing to be remembered and recognized later.

    > I know you meant Robert Young, and I am in agreement with you. If you've ever seen Father Knows Best, I think this was the role that let him transition out of male pretty face status.

I do indeed mean Robert Young. I do not know why I always think one is the other.

I have read of Father Knows Best

    I have not seen it.

    > I love how Dorothy is given harsher lighting and average looks;

I find it amazing how they can make beautiful women look very plain. It was also the case in *My Big Fat Greek Wedding* (2002). It seems odd to me that they can use what it meant to be used to make people beautiful in the reverse. It is the opposite of air-brushing.

    > My only quibble is the denouement (for the couple) after their marriage, As a writer, I can see the plot-progression, (with the symbol of the Cottage for Newlyweds only) but more could have been made of what Mrs Minite sees and not the wedding night melodrama played out. How do you see the night of enchantment?

I believe this is a situation where written words are more effective in that they can contain emotional information while they are creating the mental images and images on a screen must try to achieve that as an aftereffect.

There is also the point-of-view factor. A writer can change whose eyes through which the reader is looking. A movie is nearly always third-person. I believe this makes it far more difficult for a movie to achieve the subtle effects which are possible in writing.

I have been reminded that writing can also contain tactile and aromatic references which are missing from movies. The feel of silk sheets can remind a character of times they were alone which can heighten the fact that they believe they will now never be alone again. A jasmine-scented breeze coming through an open window can make a character believe the world has created just for them a sachet which invokes love and security. The visual analogs are very much less effective.

  11. A simple home with a simple problem:

I am sorry I did not state the location of the buildings. They are In Odessa which is the most grand and glorious city in the world. The architecture spans centuries and it was influenced by many nationalities, cultures and styles. I remember a distinct Art Deco building which is wonderful. It is sad to say I can find no picture of it.

    > Wouldn't *Moscow* be the logical choice to land?

I believe they might chose NYC as I believe it has the highest electricity density and energy could be thought to mean useful activity.

I remember a short cartoon of aliens approaching Earth. They were discussing how to make themselves more appealing to the masters of this world. In the end they smeared their bodies with tuna and learned eighty-seven ways to say "meow".

We believe we are the most intelligent beings on this planet because we have invented clocks, highways and televisions. Dolphins may believe they are the most intelligent based on the same evidence.

  13. I believe the entire week was justified if it was the reason they aired: *Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine* (1965). This is a movie of which I had never heard and would never have sought from other sources. The most wonderful aspect of TCM is that it selects and airs such little-known treasures.

I believe you must link to an image by using its url on the Internet. Nothing saved to your computer will appear unless you are hosting your own website.

Your post also contained a url which can not be used in this forum. It is the image data presented as a url and is not an actual link. Such things can be recognized because the url beings with 'data'. A url which can be linked will begin with 'http' or the website name and they will end with .jpg or .gif or another common image file type.
