I wish to remind all that there are only twenty days left to complete your schedule. I expect really great schedules from all who have been snowed in recently! -

Mine will be up soon, as soon as I decided on which schedule to post..... I had not thought of that use for that option and I am very happy it affords you the opportunity to correct a cinematic injustice. I am very much looking forward to your schedule! -

I am very pleased that you do not find it too odd. I meant it to be a relief for a time when a desired theme had too few excellent movies to fill out a day or when a person might need to select a movie only because of its length because a better movie would leave an odd amount of time. It was only after posting that I became aware of the truly warped possibilities. -

This is a shamless bump to bring the Challenge back into everyone's awareness. I hope that those who have been debating whether or not to enter to immediately begin their schedules. Capuchin can not enter as I have volunteered him to help me run this Challenge and someone has to take his place. -

> {quote:title=kingrat wrote:}{quote} > Sansfin, I'm having fun with the "Character as Guest Programmer" option. Can't wait to see what other people come up with. I am very happy you enjoy it. I wished to make it an option because I think it is a fun thing to play with but it would be expecting too much to make it required. > One small question: must we begin each day at exactly 6:00 a.m.? The real TCM schedule begins at approximately 6:00 a.m. I believe set in stone are the starting time on Sunday and that the next feature could begin at 6:00 AM the next Sunday. The 6:00 AM beginnings of the other days' schedule are very traditional but I believe there have been exceptions in real schedules. I would never keep a schedule out of the voting thread just because of certain liberties in this regard. It is not as rigidly fixed in the real world as beginning evening programming at 8:00 PM. > Thanks for giving us so much freedom with the Freedom theme, too. Thank you for your kind words. I had hoped to find a theme which would transcend genres and periods. I am a little apprehensive that no one has commented on the option of having a made-up movie. I do not know whether that is because no one is interested in it or if they wish to keep their fiendish plan secret. Both possibilities scare me. -

> 1) We are talking about 8 +2 premieres, 3 movies for a box set, 2 guest character programmer selections and 4 foreign studio/performer films? If you ignore all of the options you have up to ten premieres (8+2). If you use all of the options you will have up to nineteen premieres. The extra premieres for specific themes are because I wished to promote these themes without making them mandatory. >Plus 1 Essential, 1 Underground, 1 TCM Import, and 1 Silent Sunday Night being exempt from the premieres count? Underground, Import and Silent Sunday Night are Exempt by tradition. I added Essentials as Exempt for this Challenge so that a person does not have to compromise their selection if they are running short on premieres. > 2) You list the theme as being "Freedom". Then you list options. Is it required or suggested that we will fulfill all or some of the options? I made those suggestions so people would not think they had to focus on revolutions which affected huge populations and could use personal-level freedom. No one needs to use any of them which is why I added: "whatever comes into your mind when you think of Freedom." > 3) You also mention an option of a foreign studio for a Star of the Month. Is it a foreign studio or a foreign star ? It is a Star of the Month's movies from any one foreign studio. I believe that it would be much easier to acquire the rights if it meant dealing with only one source. To determine a distributor having rights to American distribution would mean much in-depth research and would be open to argument. It is my touch of realism to limit it to one studio. >4) You mentioned something about 4 titles to a theme. Does this mean that if we create any theme, a minimum of 4 titles are needed to support that theme? That is the minimum for this Challenge's required theme of Freedom. >I'm looking forward to entering but please give some guidance on the above questions. I am very much looking forward to seeing your schedule! -

> {quote:title=misswonderly wrote:}{quote} > SansFin, baby, where have you been ? ( just kidding, in a rhetorical exclamation of glee that you're back.) I am sorry I have not been in the forum recently. One requirement for licensing is performing duties under close supervision in a normal work environment. I did not expect to do it for two years because it is most usual to do it at end of schooling. There was an opening because others had to drop-out. They said I could do it now because I am only going through courses to meet legal requirements here. It means working fifty hours each week in one city while going to school in another city. It is not easy also because I only did technical work before and I did not often deal with actual patients so much of it is very new to me. It is also a strange situation when I come to Capuchin's to use his computer to connect with the Internet. One of his ex-wives is staying here while her house is being rebuilt. I do not think she likes me. I am fortunate that Capuchin is helping me with this Challenge. The theme and options are all of my ideas but he has helped with the text and will handle the copying, formatting and reposting of schedules in the voting thread. I hope everyone is going to do their very best work in this Challenge and use all of their most creative and inspired themes! > You were missed. Is that not better than being hit? -

Welcome to TCM Programming Challenge #18! This post contains the requirements specific to this Challenge: I) Challenge #18 starts *now* and closes at 11:59PM PT on March 1st. II) The theme of Challenge #18 is: *Freedom* It may be anything from a young person becoming a legal adult to a criminal released from prison to an immigrant coming to America to a divorce to whatever comes into your mind when you think of Freedom. III) Premieres The Premiere Allowance is: eight premieres from 'other studios' libraries (Section 9 in previous post) and two premiers from any studio. Short films do not count toward the Premiere Allowance when used to fill up to 30 minutes between feature films. IV) Options: A) Up to four movies from any one foreign studio for a Star of the Month whose main body of work was outside the United States will not count toward the Premiere Allowance. Up to three movies for one Box Set which showcases an off-screen woman will not count toward the Premiere Allowance. She may be a director, cinematographer, screenwriter or any other position whose work is on the screen even though she is not. C) Two films in a Guest Programmer evening will not count toward the Premiere Allowance if the Guest Programmer is a movie character. In other words: do not select films Humphrey Bogart would pick but instead use films which Sam Spade in *The Maltese Falcon* would pick. Please say in Programming Notes why they would like those movies. D) You may have one movie up to 120 minutes in length which you have made-up. It should appear in your schedule as a normal movie. Sample: 3:45 AM *We Demand a Recount* (1732) Cast: Bela Lugosi, Brad Pitt, Ricky the Wonder Llama. Dir: Hal Lewton and Otto Preminger. Never-Never-Again Films, 118 mins. An entry similar to a standard TCM schedule must appear in Programming Notes: *We Demand a Recount* (1732) Denizens of TCM forums regret their votes in the last challenge and chase the Challenge-Setter to Florida, culminating in a cinematic tribute to Charlie Chaplin in the Museum of Hanging Chads. Cast: Bela Lugosi, Brad Pitt, Ricky the Wonder Llama. Dir: Hal Lewton and Otto Preminger. Never-Never-Again Films, 118 mins. This movie will not count toward the Premiere Allowance. E) For this challenge the Essential movie at 8PM on Saturday is Exempt and does not count toward the Premiere Allowance. I very much hope that most of the old pros come out of retirement and delight us with their most insightful, creative and outlandish themes. Let the fun begin! Any grammur, speling or typografical errors in these posts are due to Capuchin who has acted as soul poofreader. -
Welcome to TCM Programming Challenge #18! This post contains the basic rules. I hope they are complete and clear. Please ask questions or point out any errors. The theme, number of premieres and other information specific to this Challenge appear in a following post. *THE TCM PROGRAMMING CHALLENGE - THE BASICS* *Why?* Back in the mists of time -February 26, 2006- Path40a created the first TCM Programming Challenge to give people a glimpse into what it means to be a programmer and to direct critical energy into positive experience. The Challenge has endured because it allows entrants to exercise their imagination, display their knowledge and introduce rare classics. The Challenge is neither sponsored nor endorsed by TCM but tcmprogrammr has stated in several threads they happily steal ideas from Challenge entries. Many entrants have had the joy of seeing their themes used in actual schedules. The greatest reward is acclaim from fellow movie lovers. Everyone who enters or who is a registered member of this forum one month prior to the opening of the Challenge is allowed to vote for their favorite schedule in a separate voting thread begun by Challenge Setter after the Challenge is closed to entries. The winner has the honor of running the next Challenge. *Who?* Everyone is welcome to create and post a schedule. Those who are new to this forum are particularly encouraged to enter. Old Masters who have been sitting out also need to bring their brilliance, wit and prowess back to the fray. Now is the time for everyone to bring out their best ideas! *What?* 1) Challenge entries are a full week's schedule for TCM beginning at 6:00 AM Sunday and running through to 6:00 AM the next Sunday. a) Each day's programming begins at 6:00 A.M. (ET). Primetime/Evening begins at 8:00 P.M. (ET). c) Feature movies start at x:00, x:15, x:30 or x:45. d) Short films may start at any time. e) Cartoons, trailers or short films should fill in between movies so there is never more than 14 minutes of non-scheduled time between feature movies. f) Time for introductions and closing comments should be allowed for movies in evenings. g) The week selected must be between within one year of the closing date of the Challenge. 2) Star of the Month a) A minimum of four movies in a block on one evening showcasing the actor. The star must have a body of work large enough to allow similar blocks the other weeks in the month. c) A list of previous Star of the Month may be found at: http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?messageID=8482599 I give many thanks to lzcutter for creating and maintaining this list. 3) Regular TCM features a) Silent Sunday Nights is a silent movie which begins at approximately 12:00 A.M. (ET) Monday. TCM Imports is a foreign film which begins at approximately 2 A.M. (ET) Monday. c) TCM Underground is a little-known or cult film which begins at approximately 2 A.M. (ET) Saturday. d) The Essentials is an indispensable classic movie which begins at exactly 8:00 P.M. (ET) Saturday. 4) Themes a) The Challenge Setter will stipulate one theme which must be represented by at least four movies shown consecutively. Birthday tributes to actors and directors are a staple of TCM schedules. c) Anniversaries of historical or cinematic importance are always welcome. d) Much of the fun of the Challenges comes in creating interesting, thought-provoking or totally outrageous themes. 5) Programming Notes to explain themes or motives or to provide additional information on selected movies or why they were chosen are greatly encouraged. This should be a separate post following the schedule entry. *Which?* Movies for the schedule fall into three categories: always allowed, allowed as Premieres, and never allowed. 6) Movies which have been previously shown on TCM are always allowed. i) The TCM site has programming notes for many movies which have aired. They may be found by entering the movie's title into the search bar on TCM's homepage and selecting the "Site" button. ii) The TCM site also has articles for many movies which have been shown. These may be found by entering movie title into the seach bar on TCM's homepage, selecting the "Movie Database" button and selecting the appropriate movie from list. "Articles" will be in bold font and clickable in the list of links at the left side of the screen if an article is available for that movie. These methods will never produce a false positive: a movie has been shown if programming notes and an article are available for a movie. These methods may produce a false negative: some movies -particularly shorts- which have been shown on TCM have no accompanying programming notes or article. 7) Movies in the Public Domain are always allowed. http://www.archive.org/details/feature_films 8) Movies in the original Turner library are always allowed. Warner Bros (pre-1948 only): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0026840/ MGM (pre-1986): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0020206/ RKO (all): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0041421/ 9) Movies allowed as Premieres are in the libraries of these studios: Columbia Pictures (all) http://www.imdb.com/company/co0071509/ United Artists (after 1950): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0026841/ Samuel Goldwyn (all): http://www.imdb.com/company/co0016710/ J. Arthur Rank Film Distributors: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0027356/ 20th Century Fox: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0000756/ Paramount Pictures: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0023400/ Universal Pictures: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0005073/ British Gaumont Pictures: http://www.imdb.com/company/co0103050/ Warner Bros. movies from 1948 and afterward and MGM movies from 1986 and afterward are also allowable as premieres. 10) Movies which are never allowed are Disney-created animated movies. a) Animated movies created by other studios and whose rights were later acquired by Disney are allowed. Live action Disney movies are allowed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Disney_live_action_films 11) The Challenge Setter determines how many Premieres are allowed for that particular Challenge. The Challenge Setter too determines whether movies from other studios are allowed. 12) Other content which has either appeared on TCM or closely mimics such content is allowed. This includes but is not limited to: Private Screenings, Now Playing and documentaries. *How?* 13) Please show the time, title, year, actor(s), director(s), studio, running time and any necessary justifications. a) Sample: 9:45 AM *One Romantic Night* (1930) Lillian Gish, Rod La Rocque, Conrad Nagel. Dir: Paul Stein. Joseph M. Schneck Productions, 73 mins., P/S i) Running times and studio information may be found in the TCM database or at IMDB.com. ii) Please do not include a synopsis or description of the movie in the schedule. Please include such information in your Programming Notes. Justifications which may be needed are: i) p/s or P/S or Previously Shown for a movie which is eligible for the schedule because it has been previously shown on TCM. ii) E or Exempt for a movie which would be Premiere but which are not counted against the Challenge allowance because they are Silent Sunday Night, TCM Import or TCM Underground feature. iii) P or Premiere or Premiere #x for a movie which counts towards the Challenge allowance. (Please refer to *Which* section for more information concerning P/S or P standing.) c) Please do not use emoticons, pictures or three exclamation points in a row in either schedule or program notes. Doing so seems to confuse the forums software. *When?* The Challenge begins when the Challenge Setter posts the requirements for their Challenge and declares the Challenge open to entries. It ends at the day and time set by the Challenge Setter. A Voting thread will be started shortly after the end of the Challenge and runs for one week. *Links to previous Challenges and schedules:* Challenge #17 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=156104&start=90&tstart=45 Challenge#16 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=153156&start=120&tstart=0 Challenge#15 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=150344&start=120&tstart=450 Challenge #14 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=148117&start=90&tstart=0 Challenge #13 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=142511&start=225&tstart=0 Challenge #12 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=139071&start=150&tstart=0 Challenge #11 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=134132&start=210&tstart=0 Challenge #10 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/thread.jspa?threadID=127551&start=30&tstart=495&messageID=8088572#8088572 Challenge #9 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=8046284#8046284 Challenge #8 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=8013984#8013984 Challenge #7 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7973260#7973260 Challenge #6 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7934043#7934043 Challenge #5 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7877675#7877675 Challenge #4 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7847611#7847611 Challenge #3 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7827881#7827881 Challenge #2 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7794350#7794350 and the original from the immortal Path40a Challenge #1 http://forums.tcm.com/jive/tcm/message.jspa?messageID=7781430#7781430 Please feel free to ask questions!

Things to Groove on--upcoming on TCM this week!
SansFin replied to markbeckuaf's topic in General Discussions
I very much like Kim Novak, Fred MacMurray and noir but *Pushover* (1954) did not excite me. I believe part of the problem is the storyline. I found it difficult to accept Fred MacMurray as an innocent drawn into crime. His meeting and affair with Kim Novak was duplicitous. It does not matter that he was doing it 'for the greater good' as an officer seeking information. It was a slimy job and he did it with great enthusiasm. I believe another part of the problem was the lack of a foundation of a deep relationship between them. There was no evidence of him falling for her or for her needing him. I also fault Richard Qunie for using a great many empty mood shots. I found myself thinking: "This pause is meant to show us..." instead of my feeling as if I was reading the character. I am happy I have watched it but it does not reach standards of so many better noir films. -

I do not know when or where it might be shown again but if you like Alan Cumming you must watch: *Bernard and the Genie* (Made for Television 1991). It has Lenny Henry as a genie helping doltish Alan Cumming recover from very bad pre-Christmas situations. It is hilarious!

Moguls and Movie Stars debunking John Wayne
SansFin replied to DONQSONOFZORRO's topic in Films and Filmmakers
John Wayne is not one of my favorite actors but he made some of my favorite movies: *Hatari* (1962), *Blood Alley* (1955) and *Hellfighters* (1968). When I was growing up he was deemed to be very much the face of America and so the government did much to discredit him and his movies. I do not remember it ever being said that he was coward in real life or that he refused to perform military service. Those would have been very powerful accusations and would have affected many people's view of him. Because the government did not make such statements against him makes me believe very strongly that there were no facts to support them. -

I recorded *Zoo in Budapest* (1933) and *Josephine and Men* (1955). I hope to watch them this week. I have been told the second is very much under-rated. *Pushover* (1954) is one of the few Kim Novak movies I have not seen and I am greatly looking forward to it. -
Films about religion or religious experiences
SansFin replied to MyFavoriteFilms's topic in General Discussions
I believe you may be thinking of a far different kind of wrestling. Twelve cases of J-ello and four gallons of whipped cream are needed to fill a standard bathtub. -

Somewhat Off-Topic: What have you been reading lately?

> {quote:title=clearskies wrote:}{quote} > Each photo online had a quote from "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte. This is very off-topic but your comment reminds me of an incident related by Dumas. He wanted a picture of the Chateau d'If because he wanted to place a second story in the same area as his earlier The Count of Monte Cristo. When he acquired a print made for the tourist trade he was amused to find that the artist had labeled the wall from which Edmond Dantes had been thrown into the sea.
