I like Cher. I am very interested in seeing what she can bring to any format. She is a very classy and multi-talented powerhouse. She is welcome on my television any time.

Somewhat Off-Topic: What have you been reading lately?
SansFin replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
I have finished re-reading Albie Baker's Stolen Sweets (1973 Saturday Review Press). He was a third-rate thief who made some first-class scores. He mentioned playing poker with Tony Curtis and playing tennis with Martha Hyer and Kathy Grant when 'Harry' let him stay in a cabin at the location shoot of *Mr. Cory* because he needed to hide out from the law. He was also a scriptwriter and a technical advisor. Many references claim he was the inspiration for *To Catch a Thief* (1955). I am also working through Sax Rohmer's Fu Manchu series. I had to re-read The Mask of Fu Manchu because I knew a movie had been made of it and I could not see the connection between book and movie. -

VOTING THREAD for 17th TCM PROGRAMMING CHALLENGE

> {quote:title=countessdelave wrote:}{quote} > I'll be eager to see the Challenge that you come up with. I believe now I will schedule it for February 1, 2011. It may be harder to create a good theme than it is to do a schedule. I have had two ideas but searching IMDb shows less than one hundred movies suiting each and I do not wish entrants to fight over such limited selection. Thank you again for creating and running a great Challenge! -

Thank you for your kind words. I fear I will bungle the task so horribly it will make everyone lose interest. I do not wish to go down in the annals of the forum as the person who killed the Challenge. I know you can be of great help in one very important way: come out of retirement and create a schedule! -

> {quote:title=misswonderly wrote:}{quote} > Tip when making chili: a secret ingredient that makes it delicious is about a teaspoon -no, dammit, let's throw caution to the winds - a tablespoon of cocoa. Real cocoa powder, no sugar added. Add it to the chili around the same time you'd add the chili powder. I thought that was my secret until Capuchin made his winter chili. He adds a tablespoon for each two pounds of meat. I also like to mix cocoa powder with sour cream and add it to each bowl just before serving. -
You may wish to add for nerdlicks such as me: December 7 on SyFy Channel 9:00 PM (ET) *Eureka* O Little Town 10:00 PM (ET) *Warehouse 13* Secret Santa I believe both are new holiday specials outside the series.

> {quote:title=filmlover wrote:}{quote} > Congratulations! > As to the starting time of the next Challenge, I would vote for Feb. Thank you for your kind words. Looking at all the variables and other activities I am now thinking February 1 will be a good date. As this is my first experience hosting the Challenge I hope I can rely on the Old Masters to quickly set me straight if I err in any regard. -

*Chocolat* (2000) is for those who worship chocolate. Having chocolate properly mixed with chili powder as shown in the movie is a religious experience. Does that count? -
VOTING THREAD for 17th TCM PROGRAMMING CHALLENGE

Thank you all for your kind words. I am still very much stunned that my schedule won over such wonderful competition. I am now wondering when the next Challenge should be. They were three months apart for the first two years but since then have been four months apart. This would make the next one either in January or February. Should I split the difference and begin it in the middle of January? I will very much appreciate everyone's advice. -

I am very sorry to say that I can think of nothing witty to say. I am as nearly speechless as I can be. Thank you for your votes. I am honored you choose me over such other worthy entrants. You say that being the winner means I host the next Challenge. The reward for my hard work is more hard work? That reminds me very much of many jobs I have had. All the schedules were quite wonderful. You are all to be congratulated! Thank you for running an excellent Challenge countessdelave! -

filmlover - Thank you very much for your vote. In your comment in the original thread you said my Vole day left your head spinning. That was my hope. It is said that if you cannot dazzle voters with your brilliance you must blind them with ... audacity. Fedya - Thank you very much for your vote. I feel as if I am waiting for the other shoe to drop to show this is a Bizarro World way of showing your support for all the other schedules. It is truly an honor to receive votes from such worthy competitors who have themselves created wonderful schedules in this Challenge and many past Challenges. -
It has been many years since I have seen it but I remember *Kentucky Fried Movie* (1977) having several good minutes in it. Henry Gibson's skit about death was quite funny.

Footlight Parade line...what does it mean??
SansFin replied to TriciaNY's topic in General Discussions
Applesauce means the same as horseradish. The Cat's Meow means the same as The Bee's Knees. Java is also Joe. A Darb is the opposite of A Piker. Many people bought their Giggle Juice at a Juice Joint. -
*We're No Angel Food Cake* - After Bogie wins the Rachael Ray look-alike contest he is a guest on her show and he is disappointed he will not be allowed to make his signature dish because R.R. does not allow anything that requires careful measuring.

> {quote:title=InFlynn wrote:}{quote} > I used to hear, "What do you want me to do, stand on my head and spit nickels"? I still don't know what that was supposed to mean. I believe that is reference to slot machines. The pay-out chute was located at the bottom of the machine. Phrase meant to provide riches for little input. -
I very much love American films but may I suggest you chose a movie from 1950s or 1960s Japan. Ozu, Ichikawa and Kurosawa used image very strongly to tell the story in ways dialogue does not. I believe a person strongly interested in design elements would find them very rich.

Imitation is the sincerest form of plagiarism. Thank you for your encouraging words tcmprogrammr. I would be thrilled if you would steal some of my themes, ideas or associations for use in a real schedule. -
I am surprised a movie based on FEMEN activists has not been made. The drama of going topless in Kiev would surely interest American men even if they do not support women's rights.

The only thing which I find easy about making decision is that I cannot vote for myself so that narrows it down to six but I am firmly decided that countessdelave is a winner for running a great Challenge! -
More series films shown as marathons or at a regular time each week. More foreign films. More animation other than cartoons. More cartoons. More tributes to character actors. Less reviewers/historians/analysts/interviews. Less anything that is not an actual movie.

I remember uproar when TCM showed Cousteau documentaries. To air made-for-television mini-series would incite riot!
