WHAT is GOING ON with TCM UNDERGROUND?!
SansFin replied to LornaHansonForbes's topic in General Discussions
Perhaps they could find a host who could become a sort of "man you love to hate" icon. You could have fans tuning in to see what an atrocious idiot he is going to be this week. There are many people who love to scream at their television and argue with news anchors. This could tap into that niche market. The "man off the street" caused me to think of having people record lavish praise or devastating denouncements of movies while being careful to not mention title, actors or specific scenes. These would then be selected completely at random before airing. I must wonder how long it would take the public to become aware that those people are not actually speaking of the movie which follows. I have little love for Intros. They frequently contain spoilers or focus a viewer's attention on an aspect which only critics find important. Example: mentioning that set design was three-quarters of the movie's budget or that all the sets and props were scrounged from an old theatrical warehouse and automotive scrapheap will turn an aspect that might have been invisible to the viewer into a major theme. I prefer to form opinion by right of my own viewing experience rather than having it guided, shaped and molded by some lackey who could not make it as a screenwriter and so has to make a living writing blurbs. I love Outros which provide glimpses into aspects of the movie which reinforce impressions. A viewer might think that the leads were wonderful together and then learn that the two had an affair during the filming. A viewer might wish there was a sequel because the story should not end there and then learn that one was planned but box office figures did not support the decision. -
I am sorry to say that I have not found a critical analysis which explains the commonly-held reason most of his works are considered: 'unflimable' but I have read that notation in several different places in regards to his various works. I doubt very much that: Guns of the South could be made into a movie today because realistic representations of historical mores, ethics and fashions are considered hate speech.

I am sure that you made that suggestion with the best of intentions but I will pass on it as it would only serve to heighten my depression.

For: D0ggystyle (2001): "Alternate versions: The movie exists in an 84-minute version with sex scenes and a 64-minute version without." I know nothing more about this movie and do not know if it is available for viewing anywhere. I simply stumbled across it while searching for information on how/why Kermit the Frog is commonly held responsible for the attacks on: The World Trade Center towers.

Monte Carlo Nights (1934) A playboy is ready to reform and settle down with a woman he truly loves. His last night of drinking and gambling does not go as planned because he is in the office of a casino owner when someone shoots the owner and tosses the gun into the room. He picks it up and is soon on his way to prison. This is one of Monogram's best B-movies. John Darrow acquits himself well as a man whose virtues were just beneath the surface and needed little to unearth them. Mary Brian is adequate as the woman who loves him despite all the evidence that he is no good. Yola d'Avril and Astrid Allwyn are interesting as the temptations he is just able to resist. George Hayes is an honest and dedicated police detective willing to put himself on the line to prove the playboy's innocence. I found it a little stagey but that is common with movies of the era. 6.4/10 I watched it on: Amazon Prime Video but I see that it is listed on several other services and that it is noted as being free on a relatively obscure one.

I must wonder if that is why they can not find a suitable host. Any person with a decent reputation in cult fandom would not wish to be identified so strongly with movies which are not truly cult movies but are simply the dregs of licensing packages. Any person who would simply shill for whatever was thrown at them would carry no weight with viewers. -
Chicken Run (2000) It is very difficult to escape from a WWII-style prison camp. It is even harder when you are a chicken who has to plan your escape while still laying at least one egg a day to prevent being chosen for the chopping block. This is very much a remake of: The Great Escape (1963) set on an egg-farm in 1950s England. The tunneling, time in solitary and Rocky jumping a fence on a tricycle were lifted directly from the original. The plot, music and desperation all mimic it closely. I love this movie very much! It is pure fun. Every aspect simply screams inspired imagination. The characters are so very expressive. It is quite wonderful that the farm owner is suspicious of the chickens and is so very hen-pecked by his tall and lanky wife who considers him a perfect idiot. That is obviously not true because no one is perfect. I must admit that he does come close but he is definitely right that those chickens are up to something. 9.3/10 I am sorry to say that I can find it available for streaming only on: Amazon Prime Video. I imagine that most libraries might carry it because of its status as a children's movie.

Summer Movie Travels - Anyone else doing something similar ??
SansFin replied to cinecrazydc's topic in General Discussions
My fuzzy and I had hoped to visit my home city in the fall. Many movies have been filmed there. I considered it a nuisance because of the traffic problems they cause and the number of otherwise-sane people who switch off their brains when within critical distance of a camera. He has an interest in seeing some locations. Of more interest to me would have been to show my fuzzy the statues of performers and writers. I believe also that it is an unforgiveable crime to not visit the steps. I am sorry to say that it appears we may not be able to go because he can not acquire a proper visa. -
I believe that you should not worry. I average seventy-five-percent as many posts per year as you. It would be much less if my count had deducted from it the number of times I have had to take Dargo in hand.

I apologize if this may seem to be wildly off-topic but I do feel that it applies in a manner... I am currently reading: The Guns of the South by Harry Turtledove. He is a classically-trained academic with a doctorate in Byzantine history. It is quite fascinating to read this because it is historically accurate in great detail except for the main plot of modern-day South Africans using a time machine to supply the Confederate Army with AK-47s. Things from why they scrounged clothes from the battlefield but would not wear Yankee coats to the many different styles of canteens they carried to officers purposely ignoring women serving discretely in the ranks bring a wonderful vibrancy to the story. I am sad to say that it is widely considered that the majority of his work is unfilmable. I believe that this may be due in large part to the absence of villains. The conditions and situations are faceless enemies against which they must battle but no individual is inherently evil. They are all good people according to the truths and values with which they were raised. An example of this is a sergeant says that he wishes he were on picket duty along the border because he might find a Yank willing to trade coffee and candy for tobacco. No one argues that it is treason or that all Yanks are devils and not to be trusted. It is nay-sayed solely on the basis that picket duty is cold! I believe that it would be a fairly easy matter for a screenwriter or director to present a character in a noir novel as less violent or misogynistic on the screen. It would be far more complicated and difficult to make a character evil within the confines of the greater story.

I watch much science fiction and fantasy where suspension of disbelief is an absolute requirement and I have no problem with lame or inaccurate depictions of scientific or magical principles which range from 'possibly maybe possible' to 'violates every known law of physics'. Such movies are set in their own universe and so are not subject to scrutiny from ours. I have just now finished watching: My Name is Nobody (1973) which has a scene in which it is pointed out that he has only one bullet remaining in his gun and he then fires three more times. I feel that is part of the charm of the movie and quite suitable for the character. What does bother me is inane inaccuracies which could have been corrected with ease if any person from the screenwriter to the prop master to the director did not need a glass bellybutton. A few such things do not ruin a movie for me but they do take me out of the movie for a bit.

I fear that I find it strains credulity to suppose that a racetrack at that time had that quantity of hundred-dollar bills on hand. What is shown in the money room is a reasonable amount if you consider it to be a mixture of ones, fives, tens, twenties, fifties and hundreds. It is also that much more than two briefcases' volume of bundled stacks of currency are placed into the bag. To put this into real-world perspective: in the robbery of Aqueduct in June of last year: "Officials say the two alleged criminals were caught on surveillance shortly after, leaving the track with 'a garbage bag and duffel bag, both of which appeared to be full.'" https://www.tmz.com/2020/06/15/aqueduct-racetrack-new-york-city-robbery-two-arrests/ Their total haul was: $280,000. To picture seven times more in half the volume is preposterous even before the denomination distribution of the 1950s is factored.
-
What I noticed during this watching is that the money was mostly in stacked bundles when it was put into the sack but was all loose when he put it into the suitcase. I am sorry to say that I am one of those people also who are affected by apparent discrepancies. Both the bag and the suitcase seem to weigh less than fifty pounds. This is based on their swing patterns and the ease with which they are picked up and are carried. Two million dollars in fifty pounds requires an average bill to be eighty-eight dollars. This suggests a mix of only fifty and one-hundred dollar bills with slight emphasis on the latter. A racetrack with that volume of high-value bills would need forklift access to their money room to accommodate the handling of pallet-loads of ones, fives and tens.

I remember reading little of it but it was that they were relatively new and were not classic Hollywood. There are those who protest the airing of any movie made after 1965 or which was not made by a Hollywood studio.

Minions (2015) A tribe of little yellow mutants seek to serve the world's greatest evil villains but inadvertently destroy every master they find. This is a prequel to: Despicable Me (2010) and shows the minions being lovable little screw-ups since the dawn of time. I seriously doubt that any child would understand the references which make this movie so splendidly funny. 7.8/10 I watched this as part of a project to ensure that birthday gifts for my little fuzzy's granddaughters are appropriate and suitable. We purchased the DVD for five dollars from: Amazon but I saw it in the five-dollar-bin at Wal-Mart the same day that it arrived.

I simply took it to mean that he was ill-fated from the beginning. It is much like when you fall to your knees and look up into the sky and say: "Why me, Lord?" and the clouds part and a thunderous voice replies: "Some people just pi.ss me off."

You might reflect on how it is a blessing that you left the industry when you did. It seems now to be a common complaint that passengers do not remove the batteries from their sex toys before checking their baggage and the jostling of it results in it being activated. The noise and vibration must then be investigated as a possible bomb. I must wonder how many of those incidents you would have to handle before you could no longer maintain a professional façade while telling a passenger that their **** triggered a partial shut-down of the airport and delayed a dozen or more flights.

I thank you for your kind words. I know intellectually that the word is used in that context. I do not know it instinctually. I mean by this that I it would come into my mind if I wished to express an exceptionally large return on an investment but I can not come to it when thinking of the keywords: "heist" or "robbery" or "caper". My only recourse is to search for the stars. I remember well: Sterling Hayden. I am at a loss to remember the name of the little guy so I must search through Humphrey Bogart movies because I knew they appeared together in two movies. I am at a loss also to remember the name of the amoral flouncey vixen and so must search the credits of: The Thin Man series of movies because I know that she appeared in one of those. The same is true with other members of the cast. It is only when I have found a second name can I pair it with: Sterling Hayden to pinpoint the movie.

The Killing (1956) An ex-convict plans a perfect robbery. My main problem with this movie is that it is difficult for me to find when I wish to watch it because I can never truly associate the title with the action and so must backtrack through which actors appeared together. I find the title inappropriate because it is not an assassination and no person was to be killed during the robbery. This movie flips all the switches for my definition of a noir. None of the characters nor any aspect of their environment are prettified or excused. They are as they are and the world is as it is. Sterling Hayden is perfect as a man who has learned the hard way that you have to take all that you can grab and that you will lose as badly for stealing a little as you will for stealing a lot. This is why he has set his sight on the grandest score possible. I have a natural antipathy for short men and Elisha Cook Jr. ideally demonstrates how they are more like yappy little dogs rather than being truly human. Marie Windsor deserves special notice as I know of few others who could so wonderfully portray simple and honest amorality while flouncing around in next to nothing. The performance of rest of the cast show why they appeared in a great number of roles during their careers. 8.3/10 I watched it on: Amazon Prime Video and I see that it is listed for viewing for free with commercials on: PlutoTv.

We have Amazon Prime Video because it is free feature of Amazon Prime. The amount saved on shipping costs pays for the subscription. I love the "Free To Me" category! It is an option also when using the IMDb.com title search engine to return only those movies which are available for free viewing under either Amazon Prime Video or IMDdTV. I caution you to not use both at the same time because it will return only those rare movies which are available on both services. There are some series for which Amazon Prime Video does not own the rights to all seasons. The one which comes to mind first is: Endeavor (2013-). It is a prequel to Inspector Morse (1987-?). Only the first seven seasons are available for free on Amazon Prime Video. I believe that one must subscribe to PBS to watch Season Eight. This is a change because only the first six seasons were available when I first watched it. They added the seventh season when the eighth season became available on PBS. It is the decision of the content provider which seasons are available for license. I have found no older series with this sliding window of availability. It is only series which are currently being produced which have this restriction. The content owners obviously use this method to attract viewers and then force them to subscribe to their service rather than allowing Amazon Prime Video users to have full access. TubiTv and PlutoTV both have five seasons of: Doc Martin (2004-) available for free viewing while The Roku Channel has six seasons. I see that Amazon Prime Video is listed as having nine seasons for sale. https://www.justwatch.com/us/tv-show/doc-martin Amazon Prime now gives credit for use with Amazon Prime Video for some orders. Selecting the slowest delivery time on an order is often necessary. It is only one dollar per item and there is a time limit on its use. We happened to acquire a sufficient amount to use it to purchase a movie. We have the DVD of that movie but the credits were there and some would expire in a few weeks and we had no other real use for them and so we pulled the trigger.
