Sherlock Holmes through the decades
SansFin replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Nigel Bruce's Watson bothers me greatly only in certain small portion of the movies. I see him as a doctor. I had doctors much like him. Not swift. Easy to fuddle. Kindly to the point of nonsense. I see him as Holmes's friend. He is perfect right type for antisocial genius to want. He acts as buffer against the world. He does not mind abuse. He is good sounding board on which to bounce ideas while not contributing his own. It falls apart very much when they say he is writer: the chronicler of Holmes's adventures. Writers are witty, intelligent, sly and not forgetful. Their minds always working. They most often add their ideas to all conversations. Stories by Bruce's Watson would be boring as medical journal. No editor would think of publishing them. -
The Black Cat (Yabu no naka no kuroneko) (1968) Chocolat (2000) Death Takes a Holiday (1934) How to Steal a Million (1966) Jewel Robbery (1932) My Neighbor Totoro (Tonari no Totoro) (1988) La Femme Nikita (1990) Rebecca (1940) Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead (1990) The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)

I wish I had known the 'Saint' movies were to be shown. I watch them all two weeks past. (I have been trying to avoid movies which will be coming onto TCM soon.) I do not understand why the descriptions are wrong. The worst is: 10:30 PM Saint In London, The (1939) The Saint's investigation of a counterfeiting ring uncovers a nest of spies. They have it backwards and wrong. He is investigating a spy when he uncovers a theft. It is not a counterfeiting ring. They are stealing money printed in England for a foreign government. The other descriptions have smaller errors. Do the people who write the decriptions not watch the movies?

Something is fishy about Friday evenings.

You must all watch *Kagemusha* (1980) next Tuesday. Tatsuya Nakadai is wonderful as both masterly leader Shingen Takeda and sniveling, cowardly Kagemusha. It is three hours long. That may seem too much. But it is wonderful film with drama, irony, pathos and intrigue. This is one of few films which makes me cry and laugh.

Why would a person not use the films of Leni Riefenstahl to introduce Americans to classic German films? She was actress, director, writer, editor, producer and cinematographer. All her work is stunning artistry. Her films can be appreciated by every person no matter their culture. Her body of work is not wide enough for her to be Star of The Month. She cannot have tribute for her August birthday. TCM would go far by finding a way to showcase her work. That would be very much better than showing marginal films which appeal to small audience.

Steve McQueen still "The King of Cool"
SansFin replied to NamathGuarantee's topic in General Discussions
> {quote:title=JarrodMcDonald wrote:}{quote} > That's hilarious...and whatever happened to the guy??? He bought your ticket, I assume...your pass to paradise with Steve. LOL I do not know what happened to boy. I live there only short time. I do not remember his name. I do remember him being clumsy. Movie was free. My father was concierge. We use his pass. Boy take me because girls not allowed to go to movies alone. -
Steve McQueen still "The King of Cool"
SansFin replied to NamathGuarantee's topic in General Discussions
My favorite is: *The Thomas Crown Affair* (1968). Steve McQueen is witty, cool and smart. I see this in 1969. He turned me on very much. I look at boy who took me to movie. I almost start to cry. -The boy did not get lucky that night.- -
More Kurosawa movies, Tue. night and Wed. morning...
SansFin replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
> {quote:title=FredCDobbs wrote:}{quote} > Because of this, for films I really want to be sure I record properly, I record on tape and dub to disk, and I set my timer a minute or so before the film is to start, and up to 5 minutes after a film is supposed to end. Thank you. That is very good advice. Sadly it can not be done when there is tribute showing one movie right after another. I do not know why they could not put on schedule real start and end times. Is it against law to say next movie start at 2:05? -
*mikemcgee * is acronym for Miscellaneous Interjections for Kinetic Emphasis - Multi Cultural Generator of Epiphanies Engine. It is random word generator with AI seeding. The project's goal is: "create seemingly relevant posts stressing an international view of insights into a forum's topics." - The project leaders claim they did not use computers to write that. - It is rumored the program is offline while technicians attempt to code in punctuation and rules of sentence and paragraph use.

More Kurosawa movies, Tue. night and Wed. morning...
SansFin replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
I am very mad and hurt TCM did not put right time in schedule. I rose very early to record all movies today. Each one on its own disk to make best quality. All day it is perfect. I set timer to switch input from one recorder to other at end of *Seven Samuri* because I need nap. Now I see movie did not end on hour like schedule say. Disk is missing last minutes. Part of them are on disk for *Yojimbo* I very much wanted all to be so very right. Capuchin looked forward for this for weeks. It could be so nice for him if done when he comes from hospital. Now it is ruined. I am so very mad and tired and hurt. TCM is good channel. Why do they not put right time in schedule? Why do they ruin it for everyone? -
I see this as challenge. I spend more than half hour to try to see what it means. I use dictionary and grammar book on how to parse. I did not move past second sentence. I have found five different meanings for it. None of them make sense. I am very happy to see I am not only one with problem understanding it.

Best Performance These Actors Ever Gave?
SansFin replied to JefCostello's topic in General Discussions
I think Burt Lancasters' best performance was *The Devil's Disciple* (1959). He is portraying typical man in atypical situation. He is arch, bemused, and caring. I do not care for him in the movies where he is one-dimension drama. -
No one should ever be afraid of gambling. There is always way to win. It is a very easy thing to do. You build a casino. Quote I like: "If state lottery money goes to education, does that mean they'll be teaching kids enough math that they'll know better than to play the lottery?"

TCM's birthday tribute to Edward Everett Horton (3/18)
SansFin replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
He did indeed narrate that series. He also played 'Roaring Chicken' on the television series *F Troop* -
Something to make U laugh!!! LOL! Bunnies: Gone With The Wind!
SansFin replied to CelluloidKid's topic in General Discussions
I have found this site's uploads very funny. -They do not have Gone With The Wind. This is The Wizard of Oz- http://www.youtube.com/hishedotcom#p/u/4/munbt8qpCiQ -
It is very strange that we are so very cold when we are hot. Capuchin's temperature has not been below 102? since Friday. My temperature is now 100.8? The bedroom theromstat is set on 96? I have a heating blanket. I am sipping hot chicken soup. Still I shiver. It is what is going around around here. They say it runs out in five days. No one dies from it. That does not cheer me.

Important film characters who never appeared in the film...
SansFin replied to FredCDobbs's topic in General Discussions
Mr. Haines in *The Women* David Wilson in *Indiscreet* He is Ingrid Bergman's old boyfriend. He sent a rose to her table at the Albert Hall. He calls her late at night when Cary Grant is with her. He sent two dozen roses to her apartment. An emergency operation prevents him from having dinner with her when Cary Grant returns. -
If I would only have to memorize the dialogue and not the stage directions: I choose Mel Brooks *Silent Movie* (1976).
-
A section of *Visit to a Small Planet* (1960) may have been Beat-Inspired. It does seem as if some of the actors were smoking what the beatniks smoked.

Is G-Rated not for children? Children love violence. This has always been known. You need only look at nursery rhymes: There once were two cats of Kilkenny, Each thought there was one cat too many, So they fought and they fit, And they scratched and they bit, Till, excepting their nails And the tips of their tails, Instead of two cats, there weren't any. Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum! I smell the blood of an Englishman. Be he live or be he dead, I'll grind his bones to make me bread. Sing a bedtime lullaby Don't lie down on the edge! Or else the wolf will nab you And drag you behind the hedge!

Voting Thread for the 15th Program Challenge
SansFin replied to lzcutter's topic in TCM Program Challenges Archive
Congratulations and thank you lzcutter for making such a wonderful challenge. It must be much hard work to put it all together. The quality of the schedules reflects on the challenge creator. They were all amazing entries. Thank you filmlover for making the posters. They are as nice as I find in stores. The pictures you choose for mine and Capuchin's are very special. Thank you all who voted. -Even if you did not vote for me.- Everyone work very hard on their schedule. It is nice to see so many people take an interest. Most special: Congratulations to Movieman1957! I knew your schedule is very good. I am sorry I could not see how wonderful it is: there were many movies I do not know. I look forward to the next contest.
