BRONXGIRL'S MOTHER, HENRY FONDA'S HIRSUTENESS, ETC.
SansFin replied to Bronxgirl48's topic in Films and Filmmakers
I am very sorry for your loss. She had a long and interesting life and passed peacefully. Those are all great blessings. That she instilled in you a love of classics movies proves she was a good person at heart and wished to share the good things in the world with those she loved. You have my sympathy for what you will experience in the coming weeks. Allow yourself to grieve. Allow the acceptance of her passing to come naturally. Do not try to overthink it or try to conquer the feelings. It is a difficult time and only time can heal the wounds. You are in our prayers. -
Seven Doors to Death (1944) I find this to be a lovely little movie. Much of the bones of it are sheer perfection. It is very Snoopy-ish in that it begins literally with: 'suddenly, a shot rang out.' It is followed immediately by a pseudo-chase scene with a woman on the running board of an automobile holding what is believed to be a weapon to the head of the driver while urging him to drive quickly away from the scene of the crime. These scenes are done so closely to being over-the-top that they create anticipation of a very enjoyable piece of fluff. There are many other wonderful moments in the movie. I find it sad to say that the tone and structure of the movie are all that a viewer can wish but the cinematography, writing of the second half and editing are unforgivingly bad. Many of the scenes are so dark is it impossible to know what is truly in the rooms. The solution of the crime is pulled out of a hat. One scene which I found very interesting was that of an attention-hungry woman performing a dance at a party. It is quite unusual and she is exceptionally talented but the scene is very close to totally ruined by cutting to people talking and watching her. The actors range in talent and performance from wonderful to competent but I felt no chemistry or even a sense of true human interaction between the characters. I am very happy that I watched this movie but the DVD has been placed in the cabinet in storage room rather than being kept near the player so that it is handy for re-watching.

I am surprised that I was not able to find any movie which featured this glorious little vehicle: I do not know if this is because of my poor research skills or the lack of imagination by filmmakers.

TCM PROGRAMMING CHALLENGE #36
SansFin replied to LonesomePolecat's topic in TCM Program Challenges Archive
2016: January: Fred MacMurray March: Merle Oberon April: Judy Garland May: Robert Ryan June: Marie Dressler July: Olivia de Havilland September: Gene Hackman October: Christopher Lee November: Natalie Wood December: Myrna Loy I am sorry to say that I do not have list for: 2017. -
I watched one episode in full and part of one other. I am sorry to say that it is not to my taste. The actors are all excellent but the material does not interest me greatly.

We installed: Crackle because they had: Firefly. I poked around: viewster today because I wished to see what was available. The: Big Four are subscription channels. We do not do that except for CBSAllAccess because it supplies the local CBS station and it has all incarnations of: Star Trek. We are cancelling that this next Sunday night. It is my understanding also that all of the: Big Four rotate their selections. I detest that. We are considering subscribing to: DirecTVNow when it comes to Roku. That seems at this moment to be the best of both worlds because it is essentially cable television at reasonable cost. XTV has my greatest interest at the moment because of the variety. There are live channels for many television series. There is an interesting mixture of On Demand television series. It include the first season of Doctor Who which I have not watched since the original airing.
-
That was my greatest fear for some years. It is now the norm for us to have live channels playing in two rooms simultaneously. There is rarely a glitch of any nature. There are problems at times with individual channels. CBSAllAccess is virtually unusable now because their new app is malformed piece of coding. We will cancel it Sunday night after last first-run episode of Elementary. I hope that it will be back to acceptable levels in the fall. FOTV has current problem with live channels dropping out after a few minutes. This type of thing is limited to their service. The next update of their app and/or Roku will likely make the problem disappear. We have not had the slightest problem yet with: Crackle, XTv, YuYu or OnClassicCinema. The signal has been more consistently stable than it was with cable television. Your comment called to my mind: If a packet hits a pocket on a socket on a port, And the bus is interrupted as a very last resort, And the address of the memory makes your floppy disk abort, Then the socket packet pocket has an error to report!

https://www.rokuchannels.tv/warner-archive-instant/ It is $9.99 per month. We considered subscribing. I poked around their site and found that the selection of movies is rather weak compared to what is available on free channels. It is also that they cycle movies in and out of availability. I detest that practice!
-
I have found that the lack of schedules is quite silly but I have philosophy that it is not crucial because we use a live channel only when we will accept what is airing rather than selecting a specific movie. A schedule would be very nice to have but I believe it would most often be a situation where I would have little interest in movie currently airing but I would wish to watch movie which will air at inconvenient time. Most channels which have a live classic movie channel have all their movies also in: "On Demand" section and so you can watch what you wish when you wish. I have this morning looked at: viewster channel. They are not a dedicated classic movie channel but they have 'classic movies' as genre in their menu. I find it an odd mix as the first screen of choices shows both: Dementia 13 (1963) and: A Farewell to Arms (1932). Their selection is less than two hundred movies so it is probable that this will not come to be one of our 'go to' channels but I hope to find time to review their inventory for movies which I have not found on other channels.
-
I do not see it as: "another" device. It is replacement for the cable box. The cable box was sixteen inches by twelve inches by three inches and it cost $14 per month to have. The Roku is five inches by five inches by one inch and it has no monthly cost. Smaller size with less cost is advancement to replace inefficiency.
-
We did not stream movies because we do not watch movies on small computer screens. We have now two Roku. The physical connections are similar to a DVD player. One must create a account on Roku but that is minimal hassle. There are many 'channels' which carry only classic movies and classic television programs. Some are only 'On Demand' for which you must select which movie you wish to watch but there are some also which have live channels. Our favorites are: Pluto and FOTV. Both have several channels which air rotations of classic movies. It is sad to say that neither publishes schedules so it is all catch-as-catch-can. It is sad to say that there has been a problem in recent weeks with FOTV not maintaining connection but such things come and go as updates to Roku and the channels change behaviour.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM
SansFin replied to Bogie56's topic in General Discussions
This movie is excellent! It works on many levels and is a bit of a mystery even at the end. The personalities are quite distinct and deeply drawn. -
We are waiting for DirecTVNow to be available on Roku. It was promised the first quarter of this year. There is now no word as to when/if it will be available. We have checked several times and the charge would be $35 per month for the channels we wish to have. The same set of channels are over $90 on local cable.

It is my understanding that the primary source of income is carriage fees.

Sure, Lady Snowblood (1973) is fine, but. . . .

A manga is a graphic novel. They are in many genres and are created for a variety of ages. They are not 'comics' in the general American sense. The major divisions are: Kodomo manga is for small children. Shōjo manga is for teenage girls. Shōnen manga is for teenage boys. This is the most popular in America. A major genre is: martial arts but science fiction, sports and horror are popular also. Josei manga is for women. This is equivalent in many ways to romance novels. Seinen manga is for men. Hentai manga is pornographic. They are almost exclusively black and white and are sold in anthologies containing chapters of several series. A successful series will then be reprinted complete in a separate book. Anime is a video version of a manga. My favorite manga/anime is: Gansuringā Gāru by Yu Aida. It is shōnen manga. It explores complex personalities and relationships within a science fiction framework containing several other genres. It is quite touching in many ways and on many levels. -
TCM to discontinue print editions of Now Playing
SansFin replied to Barton_Keyes's topic in General Discussions
It is possible on some systems with some printers to select: "landscape" and "double-sided" when printing. You can then fold the page in half to have 5.5x8.5. Our word processor has an option to import a file and print it as a booklet. This rearranges the printing pattern so that you can stack the sheets and fold it and have the pages in order. -
I believe they automatically adapt. I clicked on the relevant hits. This 'told' them which results were relevant to those search terms. This happens often with Google in that a search will present one set of results but will present completely different results a short while later after other users are searching for information of a current event. You see this also in the suggestions for search terms. One word which is currently trending in the search will skew the results dramatically.
-
I had a particularly vexing session with Google and so was quite happy to see alternatives which I had not considered. I entered search term: "Lened manual press" into each of your search engines. Both wished to sell me shell reloading equipment, jeans or fitness equipment. Even placing: the manufacture's name of Lened in quotes did little to help. Each seemed to consider it misspelling of: Lee!

I am a great fan of the new incarnation of the series but I am a great fan of the original series also. You may note in my post that I placed Elisabeth Sladen prior to Billie Piper. I believe it was in: Doctor Who episode: Pyramids that Sarah Jane Smith was quick to arm herself prior to Doctor telling her to do so. I find such little things important because they demonstrate that she recognizes situational needs and she is able and willing to do what is required with no hesitation even when it is in conflict with her personal preferences.. I like very much Peter Capaldi but we have been exceptionally casual about watching the last two seasons because it became: The Clara Show co-starring the Doctor. I believe that Karen Gillan is perhaps my favorite of the companions because her character in the initial episodes was clearly subordinate to the Doctor and followed him in wide-eyed wonder but she did demonstrate subtle personal strengths.
-
She was the first which came to my mind also. Ingrid Bergman is a very close second. I was very disappointed by: Star Trek: Voyager which I have very recently watched. She seemed to me to be much less a captain as much as she was HBIC. I am now watching: Star Trek: Enterprise and am enjoying it immensely. Jolene Blalock's portrayal of female Vulcan science officer is quite wonderful. I have found that science fiction is far more open than the mainstream to strong female characters. It is with very few exceptions that Doctor Who's female companions have been quite attractive and have very strong personalities and demonstrated great ability to lead. Karen Gillan, Elisabeth Sladen, Billie Piper and Freema Agyeman were stellar and were given scripts which showed they were capable of meeting any challenge. Amanda Tapping in the: Stargate series' incarnations and movies and Gina Torres in: Firefly (2002-2003) and: Serenity (2005) are widely lauded for both their strong personalities and attractiveness. From: Doctor Who episode: Dinosaurs on a Spaceship (2012): Riddell: [coming in from trying to tranquilize a pack of velociraptors] Doctor! This is a two-man job! [sees Amy picking up a tranquilizer gun] Riddell: And what are you doing? Amy Pond: [walking past him toward the dinosaurs] I'm easily worth two men. But you can help if you like.

I have a list which I compiled for possible use in week-long: "variations on a theme" theme for an entry in: TCM Programming Challenge. Marjorie Main as Ma Kettle in Ma and Pa Kettle (1949) Anne Bancroft as Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate (1967) Sheila Raynor as Mrs. DeLarge in A Clockwork Orange (1971) Agnes Moorehead as Mrs. Kane in Citizen Kane (1941) Gladys Cooper as Mrs. Vale in Now, Voyager (1942) Gita Dey as Nita's mother in Meghe Dhaka Tara (1960) Eleanor Audley (voice) as Lady Tremaine in Cinderella (1950) Elsa Lanchester as Mrs. Stiles in Willard (1971) Helen Hayes as Madelon in The Sin of Madelon Claudet (1931) Lana Turner as Mrs. Anderson in Madame X (1966) Gertrude Lawrence as Mrs. Wingfield in The Glass Menagerie (1950) I yet find it slightly unnerving that Judith Anderson in Rebecca (1940) is Mrs. Danvers which implies that there was once a Mr. Danvers. I do not wish to explore deeply the thought that she might have become a mother.
