I love Dragnet Girl - - are they showing it on TCM? I saw it at a film festival in Paris. I was halfway into it before I realized it was a silent movie.LOL
I am sorry to say that I doubt that: TCM will ever schedule it. My sole complaint concerning: TCM scheduling is their lack of enthusiasm for: foreign language movies. They do seem to schedule only those which gained world popularity.
I do not know specifically if: Dragnet Girl (1933) was meant to have: benshi. It was common practice for movies during silent era but some later silent movies were not meant to have one. I am sorry to say that I do not know how to research if this movie was meant to have one.

My Top Ten Favorite list of crime drama movies released in: 1930s is:
Stürme der Leidenschaft (1932)
Le Jour se Leve (1939)
M (1931)
Port of Shadows (1938)
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933)
The Serpent's Fang (1935)
Dragnet Girl (1933)
Pépé le Moko (1937)
Anna (1936)
La Bête Humaine (1938)
This was a difficult list as this was splendid decade for: German crime drama movies just as: 1960s was decade for: Czech surreal movies. I attempted again to provide good overview of movies by limiting selection from one country.

The Mad Miss Manton (1938)
The Ex-Mrs. Bradford (1936)
Haunted Honeymoon (1940)
They are mysteries in which the characters involved do not wish to investigate a murder but are forced by circumstances to do so.

My Top Ten Favorite list of surreal movies released in 1960s is:Daisies (1966)When the Cat Comes (1963)Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (1965)Birds, Orphans and Fools (1969)Testament of Orpheus (1960)A Story Written with Water (1965)The Color of Pomegranates (1969)Happy End (1967)Young Aphrodites (1963)Viy (1967)This was a difficult list because 1960s were golden age of surrealism in: Czechoslovakia and it would be easy to compile a list of: Top Ten from that country only. I wished to present more diversified list and so limited number of entries from any one country.

You'll have to excuse me if I get some of the genres a bit wrong.
I believe there is little doubt that those are all comedies and very good ones.

SansFin, can we request a list from you? How about the top ten European horror films from before 1970?
I am sorry to say that I feel the subject is so very large as to require more than one simple list. I believe that to attempt to cover six decades from a multitude of countries would be excessively superficial. To make a list even of a single decade would involve consideration of styles and basis with great variances between countries and ethnic groups. I had begun to compile a list of ten horror movies of Japan in 1960s but found it would have little meaning if I did not break it down into types of horror.
-
I feel that those are all very good movies. Several would make my: Top Twenty.
I do not mean for this to be administered thread and that others will contribute their own list of the decade and genre of their choice.

I would like to explore: Top Ten lists of favorite foreign movies within genre and decade. My Top Ten Favorite list of comedy movies released in 1930s is:Jolly Fellows (1934)Tonari no Yae-chan (1934)The Merry Wives (1939)Two Merry Adventurers (1937)The Czar Wants to Sleep (1934)The Story of a Cheat (1936)What Did the Lady Forget? (1937)Volga - Volga (1938)Business Under Distress (1931)Sara Learns Manners (1937)I have made concerted effort to avoid selecting only movies from: Mosfilm and: Lenfilm but only to extent of deciding which movie to select when there is a tie.

There appears to be a common misconception among some foreign film afficiados that TCM posters who love old/new American films cannot possibly enjoy foreign films which is simply not the case.
I am far from being: aficionado. It has been my experience with this board that foreign movies are most often considered intrusions. Even tributes to: Akira Kurosawa and: Hayao Miyazaki received many negative comments. Threads concerning foreign movies die quickly from lack of interest. The only foreign movies which seem to receive any respect are those which received wide: International distribution and became part of culture because they are inoffensive.

Five Miles to Midnight (1963) is scheduled for tomorrow morning. I like this movie very much. The pacing is slow but I found it compelling.

I feel this is perfectly wonderful schedule, Skimpole! It is quite eclectic and filled with movies which are eloquent and powerful. I find the range to be quite amazing. I would be impossibly delighted if: TCM Programmers would use this schedule.
I believe that: Danielle Darrieux is perfect choice for: Star of the Month. She is quite beautiful and talented and the range of her movies in time and style is unique. Rouge et noir (1954) is an excellent showcase of her ability to simply be the character.
The birthday tribute to: Howard Hawks is brimming with favorites. You have selected works which clearly exhibits his incredible variety. Hatari! (1962) is one of my particular favorites and I feel it airs far more rarely than it deserves.
I love with no limitations your tribute to: Don Ameche! Midnight (1939) and Heaven Can Wait (1943) are two of my for-all-time favorite movies.
I love: Czech cinema and I feel that: Alice (1988) deserves a far wider audience. I am surprised that any here know of it.
I am sorry to say that I have a fear for your theme of: Alexander Sokurov and Aleksei German. I doubt that most viewers and most posters here will recognize the brilliance of your selections as comparisons and contrasts. It is a very esoteric and subtle in its nuances. I do so very much wish that: TCM would program such powerfully stylistic and emphatic movies as: Dni zatmeniya (1988) and: Trudno byt bogom (2013) but I fear that it never will. I fear also that: Khrustalyov, mashinu! (1998) requires a viewer much more sophisticated than: TCM can find if the movie is to be appreciated to the full. I feel that: Russian Ark (2002) is the most straight-forward and therefore accessible to viewers and I remember well the disparaging remarks made in this forum when: TCM first aired it some time ago.
I feel that there is much more that I could say of all the wonderful movies which you choose but I fear that even the most which I can say is but faint praise to the brilliance of your schedule! I believe that it would not be possible to create better schedule and so I feel confident that you will have: my vote and: Capuchin's vote.

Only Yesterday was the best movie of the last two week, an intelligent, thoughtful examination of a young Japanese woman's childhood.
I love that movie very much. It is a very gentle and moving story.

ISSUR DANIELOVITCH DEMSKY
Well, that's a mouthful.
He probably got the dimple in his chin, saying it and someone socked him there.
Issur is most commonly called: Izzy.I feel that: Izzy Demsky is not onerous to hear.
-
Mischa Ounskowsky became: Mischa Auer. He was character actor who often played: 'crazy Russian' roles.
Maria Ouspenskaya became: Maria Ouspenskaya.

Kirk Douglas was born:
ISSUR DANIELOVITCH DEMSKY
Danielovitch is a surname. Demsky is likely an Americanization.
Natalia Nikolaevna Zakharenko became: Natalie Wood. Nikolaevna indicates that her father's name is: Nikolai.
Julius B. Briner became: Yul Brynner.
Edit: I have been asked why: Danielovitch can not be middle name of boy whose father is named: Daniel. It may be but most common form is: Daniil and so as middle name would be: Daniilovich. It is more common to find: Danielovitch as surname.

Yep! AND ya know, there was a very good reason these protuberances on this '55 Caddy...
I am so very happy that you posted that picture! I knew that there must be reason I keep you around.
I had thought of that style of bumper but I am sadly so non-conversant with American automobile design that it would not have been possible for me to even begin search for proper image.

I heard your real name is Jenny Talia.
I am sorry to say that I had to Google that name. I was not aware of her music. I have watched now part of one of her performances. I am sorry to have to tell you that I consider her light-weight.

Obviously men invent things that replicate their own favorite body parts.
You should know, since all those old cars had those giant fins!
I believe that in this context that one must be circumspect in mention of design of front end of: Ford Edsel.

Apollo 13 (1995) represents male psyche through symbolism.
The Saturn V is phallic symbol embracing male need to depict their anatomical feature as very large and extremely powerful. Launch of rocket into the heavens shows basic male need to feel they are worthy to have sexual intercourse with entire universe.
Calm: "We have a problem" statement represents normal male need to underplay dire situations so as to appear: macho.
All men involved feel as if heroes at the end to fulfill male need to congratulate themself for doing what is their job when circumstances are not boring and mundane. They push to the side that incident would not have happened if others on their team had done their work properly in design and construction of an essential piece of equipment.

I know that TCM would never accept my choices for movies and that many viewers would complain of a night of: foreign movies but I feel that these are all wonderful movies and that all who are capable of watching a movie with subtitles would appreciate them greatly.
The Cigarette Girl from Moscow (1924) This is wild comedy which satirizes early movie-making. It is also very touchingly human and romantic. A clip of it can be seen at:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0015213/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Jolly Fellows (1934) This is comedy romp in same nature as: Charles Chaplin, Harold Lloyd and Buster Keaton who are mentioned in opening credits as: not appearing. It is musical with many excellent jazz songs. The commandeering of a hearse for journey to music hall and the: one-man destruction of orchestra are very wonderful bits.

This movie can be viewed in full for free with English subtitles on: YouTube within: Mosfilm Channel. It is best to search: YouTube for: "Веселые ребята / Jolly Fellows"
Two Comrades Were Serving (1968) This is very touching movie of people in time of war doing what they must even although it is not their nature. Focus is on two men who are thrown together for special assignments. One is patriot-peasant who is proud to do his duty. Other is artistic soul who should not be in war and should perhaps be on other side of this one. The ending of this movie is quite powerful and moving and contains scenes which will stay with viewer for a long time. This movie can be viewed in full for free with English subtitles on: YouTube within: Mosfilm Channel. It is best to search: YouTube for: "Служили два товарища / Two Army Comrades"Formula of Love (1984) This is very precious mixture of romance, pathos and ludicrous comedy. It is retelling of a story by: Tolstoy of: Caliostro who is mystic/fakir/alchemist called to a rural estate because a young aristocrat is very much in love and needs unusual help. This help is required because he is deeply in love with a statue and he needs: Caliostro to bring her to life. This movie can be viewed in full for free with English subtitles on: YouTube within: Mosfilm Channel. It is best to search: YouTube for: "Формула любви / Formula of Love"All of the movies on: YouTube within: Mosfilm Channel have: Киноконцерн "Мосфильм" shown as poster of the movie. This is the studio: Mosfilm.-
