  1. Define: insanity. Your answer should reference: Freud, Jung and Joyce and contain at least one allegory, a message of hope, a magic spell and the lyrics to an obscure Beatles B-side.
  2. 2009: An Englishman in New York Sherlock Holmes Zombieland Foreign: Leningrad The White Ribbon Symbol
  3. It is. It is one of the few which rises above the genre to become true work of art and movie-magic. It is in some ways 'toned-down' to remain true to roots of anime but those are negligible. The storyline is complex and intense. The only other anime which I could recommend to any would be: Gansuringa Garu but that is television series.
  4. 2008: Wall-E Foreign: Kara no Kyoukai
  5. The sole movie of: 2007 which I can recommend is: Saawariya. It is quite beautiful.
  6. I generally use: imdb.com for movies released in a specific year and use their date assignment. I am sure that I did not see this movie until: circa 2010.
  7. 2006: Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead Foreign: Curse of the Golden Flower Pan's Labyrinth The Island
  8. I thank you for your kind words. I was reminded of the movie when I searched for movies of:2005. I immediately pulled DVD and have been playing it on repeat all day. It is a movie which pushes all the proper buttons for me: action adventure crime comedy romance in Dystopian future. It has also some of my favorite actors: Summer Glau, Nathan Fillion and Jewel Staite. I must wonder if: Richard Brooks would have been good in the role as: The Operative. He played bounty hunter: Jubal Early in one episode of the series. I did like very much how: Chiwetel Ejiofor presented intelligent dispassion without being cold. I do wish that some person could explain clearly why: Firefly (2002) was treated so harshly and cancelled when it was rated in top twenty and won numerous awards including an: Emmy. I do find: Jewel Staite quite wonderful. She here at all times seems to have just put out a funny little cigarette and yet she was perfect also as: no-nonsense Dr. Keller in: Stargate: Atlantis.
  9. 2005: Serenity V for Vendetta Corpse Bride Foreign: Aeon Flux Memoirs of a Geisha Kontakt I know that this is not properly the place for long commentary on movies selected but I must speak of: Serenity (2005). I am sure that most will dismiss this movie because of genre and connection to one-season-only television program. I feel that this is a loss as it is a wonderful movie which rises far above its genre in many ways. The movie is of a whole because it is vision of: Joss Whedon who wrote and directed it. All actors are comfortable and believable in their roles as they were cast of ill-fated television program on which the movie is based. It is a story of a war hero on the losing side who is now: smuggler/freebooter/gun-for-hire/thief leading a crew of damaged people with a ship which has bits falling off of it. Mal: You told me those couplings would hold for another week! Kaylee: That was six months ago, Cap'n. It is a story of a young girl who was subjected to horrific psychological tortures as part of government program to transform her into specialized soldier. She is played by Summer Glau who was ballerina before becoming an actress. Her waif-like appearance and wonderfully expressive face make her the character. I believe it is quite rare to find a person who so very much becomes their character. Mal: I've staked my crew's life on the theory that you're a person, actual and whole, and if I'm wrong, you'd best shoot me now ... [the girl pulls back the hammer of the gun she is pointing at him] ... or, we could talk more. One aspect which makes this movie perfectly wonderful is that there are many scenes which are normal for this type of movie and the situations within it and the viewer is comfortable that they know how the scene will end. Then there is of a sudden a completely unexpected moment of great intensity which adds layers of complexity to the world and the character. These are not cardboard characters being pushed around the props of standard Dystopian future. These are real people with real pasts and real feelings and real problems. Kaylee: Goin' on a year now I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries! I freely admit that production values and cinematography are not of highest quality. I find they are sufficient to show the story with no intrusions on viewers identifying with the characters within that world. It is not nearly so cheesy as Doctor Who nor is it refined gosh-wow of current Hollywood blockbusters. I urge all to watch this quietly spectacular movie .
  10. 2004: C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America Foreign: Howl's Moving Castle
  11. I will greatly miss your posts but I understand your sentiment. I have gone from having to severely cut long lists full of wonderful movies to having to search deeply for even a few worthy of mention. It is likely that I will have no movies post-2010 because I rarely watch new movies and those that I do seek out are so unusual to this audience that it would be pointless to mention them.
  12. This reminds me of the person who stated that he quit drinking because of a single incident: he awoke naked in a police car with a hooker and he was driving.
  13. It is my understanding that there is a variety of spammers who want a great quantity of posts on otherwise legitimate sites so that search-bots such as Google and Bing will add the names mentioned in the subject of the post to their findings and record a high number of hits for them. It is in this way that the posts are not truly aimed at members of a forum. Their purpose is to make search-bots 'believe' the names in the subject line are widely popular and so will present them on the first page when some person does a search for that type of thing.
  14. Then watch and learn! Just kidding. But I found 15, plus 2 toons and a funny stinker...so it's just like every other year for me. Of the eighteen movies you listed: I have watched all or most of seven of them. I would rank two of them: good. I would rank four of them: fair. I am sorry to say that none of them breaks the barrier into what I could call a favorite. I have seen some parts and/or trailers for four of them. I know that they would not be to my taste. I have not seen any part of the remaining seven. I am sure that I never knew that five of them existed. I believe it is good evidence of how my tastes are not in accord with the majority here that the: Ring Trilogy movies are not to my taste. I love the books very much. I find the orcs cute and cuddly when compared to descriptions in books and that ruins for us a large portion of the effect of the story. I found many instances of forced perspective to be obvious which ruins much of the mystique. There are other elements also which make me feel that it is poor telling of the story.
  15. All from: Serenity (2005) Malcolm Reynolds: I've staked my crew's life on the theory that you're a person, actual and whole, and if I'm wrong, you'd best shoot me now... [the girl pulls back the hammer of the gun she is pointing at him] ... Or, we could talk more. Malcolm Reynolds: I'm takin' your sister under my protection here. If anything happens to her, anything at all, I swear to you, I will get very choked up. Honestly, there could be tears. Jayne Cobb: What you plan and what takes place ain't ever exactly been similar.
  16. It does seem to me that the suggested changes imply that all people are racist and actively engage in racism. To increase diversity within: Academy will result in greater diversity in nominated roles only if it is true that whites will at all times vote predominately for whites and Native Americans will vote predominately for Native Americans and African-Americans will vote predominately for African-Americans and Filipinos will vote predominately for Filipinos and small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri will vote predominately for small furry creatures from Alpha Centauri. I feel that it would be best if: Academy would take the high road and assume that its members vote for the best regardless of race.
  17. I will get a jump on: 2003 by saying that I found none of the movies of that year to be particularly noteworthy. I have looked at several lists of movies of that year and can find none which I would wholeheartedly recommend.
  18. It has been said that snow is like sex - you do not know how many inches you will receive nor how long it will last. We have had total accumulation of approx. twelve inches from snows during the nights of Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. This is the most snow since I have been here. It is humorous to see how a little snow panics people here and the city shuts down. I drove around Friday simply because it was so unusual to have so little traffic. I could not do my expected errands because banks, grocery stores and the post office were all closed as well as the schools and most businesses.
  19. It is my understanding that that was a reasonable outcome. The first novel was crafted over time and edited and re-edited so as to exclude rambling and to include elements which might be important if the series became commercially sustainable. The conflicts for the second and third books were straightforward and in-world relevant. The conflict and plot of the fourth book was relatively set by the end of the first book as it was necessary for Lord Voldemort to return at that point. It has been discussed that important elements of the final three books were established during the writing of the first book but these elements had no framework for their presentation. The writing at that point began to meander as she strove to include these points while having no 'road map' to them. She was under time constraints also because she did not have the luxury of it-takes-as-long-as-it-takes to finish each book. It has been unkindly said that the last book was typed rather than written. I lived it very much as I did the rest of the series but it does seem less cohesive in many ways and I feel it could have been greatly improved by serious editing.

  24. Capuchin says that this movie bothered him because he felt that he should know the lead actress but could not place her. He knew Ally Sheedy only from: The Breakfast Club (1985) and: Short Circuit (1986) and so did not recognize her as burned-out druggie lesbian.
  25. I don't know what that is, but that title is great! It is of an artist who wished to be buried in the city where his family lives. It would require that his friends travel a considerable distant to attend his funeral. The journey, funeral and post-funeral gathering reveals much about them.
