  1. Your word of the day, should you chose to accept it, is: floccinaucinihilipilification. I am sorry to say that only: movie-within-movie which comes to my mind is: Singin' In The Rain (1952) set in hedonistic and self-centered Hollywood. I can say little of it which others have not said in ways much better than I possibly could. My sole unique contribution might be to present animated clip available on: YouTube which is homage to iconic scene in movie but I am sure that most here are quite tired of my constantly finding excuses to post it. I could expound at length if time allowed on movies which feature: play-within-movie. I would begin with: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990) and: All That Jazz (1979). First is set in court of King of Denmark with all the excesses of Medieval royalty and second is set in Broadway with drugs, sex and amorality associated with behind-the-scenes production of plays. I might touch also on: Kiss Me Kate (1953) and: Monte Carlo (1930). First touches on Italian nobility who have long reputation for extravagant debauchery and second shows lavish self-indulgence which made Monte Carlo world-famous. It is sad to say that it would be inappropriate for me to comment on those movies herein because they do not deal with: movie-within-movie and so I must move on to other threads.
  2. I have seen often the lament that: Guest Programmers chose frequently-aired movies and that their lists are unimaginative. Basic popularity of movies made between: 1930 and 1965 in: United States can be found at: http://www.imdb.com/search/title?count=100&countries=us&production_status=released&release_date=1930,1965&title_type=feature You may note that every movie on first two pages which could possibly be shown on TCM has at some point been in heavy rotation on TCM. Most can be associated with threads which disparage the frequency of their airing. It is quite reasonable that movies which are the most popular among movie-watching population will be popular with small sampling of: Guest Programmers. It is purpose of: Guest Programmer segment to present: Guest Programmer's favorite movies. It is not purpose of segment for: Guest Programmer to present: "obscure movie which they kind of like which has not aired on TCM previously." It is purpose of: TCM Underground and of: TCM Imports to present such movies.
  3. We have Magnavox units which have hard drives so that we can use them as DVRs and they record to DVDs also. We record to hard drives all movies which we wish to watch. Movies which we wish to keep we then record from hard drive to DVD. We do not record any movies or programs directly from broadcast to DVD. We are completists only with television programs. We wish to have all episodes even if all are not to our taste. In this way we have all of: Doctor Who, Sherlock, Father Brown, Grantchester and Death in Paradise which have aired to date. We have also all seasons of: May to December despite change of female lead at end of second season materially affected character dynamics and so later seasons are not nearly as entertaining. Recording to hard drive first allows us to edit commercials prior to recording to DVD. We would like very much complete set of: As Time Goes By also but broadcast is erratic and it might take many years and much juggling and re-recording to compile adequate set. We organize by entering important information into spreadsheet and then placing movie DVDs in alphabetical order except for compilation DVDs which contain several movies in series. We place individual movies of each series in storage as we will seldom wish to watch them and we keep all compilation DVDs in section apart from alphabetically-arranged movies. We have such compilations of: Sherlock Holmes, Boston ****, The Saint, Bulldog Drummond and The Falcon. I am sorry to say that we lack sufficient shelf space to have at ready hand all movies which we recorded. Movies which we wish to have but will watch only on rare occasions are in bins in storage area. It is rare that we watch any movies or programs when they air. Our schedules do not permit this. This is in particular true when we wish to watch at the same time. One of our units is set to record weekly television programs automatically and so we are able to watch several episodes in sequence when we have sufficient time. I am sorry to say that vast majority of my 'watching' movies of recent is truly not watching them. I place compilation DVD into player and allow it to run while I am busy with other things. I turn my attention to television only when my subconscious recognizes a favorite scene is beginning. It is in this way that up to four movies or up to six episodes of television programs play with no need for me to stop what I am doing to change DVD.
  4. I love: Hattie McDaniel as: Hilda in: The Mad Miss Manton (1938). Kit Beverly: Have you another piece of cake, Hilda? Hilda: Yes, I have, but the kitchen's closed for the night. Melsa Manton: Hilda! Miss Beverly is our guest! Hilda: I didn't ask her up!
  5. Cows http://weirdnews.about.com/od/animalsanimalsanimals/tp/People-Struck-By-Flying-Cows.htm
  6. A Quiet Place in the Country (1968) is scheduled to air on: 21st. This is quite unusual movie. I am sure it will be categorized as: Horror but I hope that none avoid it for that reason as it is very powerful movie.
  7. A court in Turkey is forming an advisory panel to determine if it is an insult to compare a public official to the movie character: Gollum as presented in: The Lord of the Rings trilogy (2001, 2002, 2003). http://popehat.com/2015/12/04/turkish-president-erdogans-precious-feelings This was deemed necessary because the judge and prosecutors in criminal-defamation case have not watched any of the movies. This is to be: “an expert panel, which will reportedly include two academics, two behavioural experts and an expert on cinema and television productions.” I must wonder if this might lead to government courts analyzing other movie characters and establishing for purposes of law whether those characters are: good, evil, acting under duress, anti-social, conspiratorial, humane, inhumane, beautiful, plain, ugly, sad, happy, grumpy, sleepy, bashful, sneezy, dopey or Doc. I must wonder also if any users of this forum who have adopted character names as their usernames might at some point be forced to defend their self-identification-as and implied-association-with that character. I do hope such will not be necessary during sanity hearing.
  8. I have not used such software but it is my understanding that user must enter content of posts, select sites where posts are to be made and set frequency of posts. It seems to me from various descriptions to be as complex and time-consuming as setting reminders in calendar software.
  9. I have been called an apologist for showing appreciation for this forum even with its faults and for not demanding major changes in the way this forum is handled. I simply try to keep in mind that this forum generates virtually no revenue for TCM. I am sure that the number of users who go from this forum directly to: TCM Store is incredibly small. This forum is a gift from TCM. I am sure their cost accountants would love to see the plug pulled. The rising number of FaceSpace and Twiddling users may lead to them reconsider their priorities in regards to their social networking presence. I try to make light of the spam attacks rather than rage against Moderators for not having money necessary to address the issue.
  10. There are different levels of spam creators. Only the lower levels consistently use the same names or local domains when posting spam. The mid-level ones primarily use a variety of public proxy servers which are also used by legitimate forum users. Foreign spam is often from higher levels which use cracked ISPs so their posts seem to come from legitimate servers. The spam regularly appearing in this forum a year ago was likely the upper parts of the low levels or lower parts of the mid levels. Current crop of spam seems to me to come from high-level spammers. It is not possible to automate against them as they create scripts to bypass each new security feature as it appears. The only consistently effective solution is human oversight.
  11. I am sorry to need further clarification: is it required for: all-star cast that they could have appeared together in one movie? I will use as example: Fredric March and Jessica Simpson. He passed away years before she was born. Would you allow them to be part of: all-star cast or is it required that they be contemporaries? I assume that it is not necessary for members of: all-star cast to all be real people. I will use as example created movie starring: Asta, Fredric March, Jessica Simpson and Line who appeared in: The Dot and the Line (1965) and Director: Alan Smithee. Am I wrong in that assumption?
  12. I must wonder if the pacing is a problem for many. Most movies have an even pace which is broken only when needed for effect. The pacing in this movie varies wildly with little effect. I suspect this moves some viewers out of their comfort zone. It does seem to be a love-it-or-hate-it movie.
  13. That is my view also. It is so charmingly silly that it needs no other justification.
  14. I am sorry to say that being up close and personal is problematic as it is several decades since I have practiced with a sabre. I have interest in being proficient once more but it is not easy when one does not have competent opponent. Capuchin knows only to use a foil. To teach him proper handling of shashka would require him un-learning much.
  15. I must wonder if there is a movie which truly shows two actual felines fighting. I know of several stories which contain such but I am at a loss to think of a single movie where cats do more than snarl at each other. I know of dog-years and cat-years but I am sorry to say that I do not know of Internet-post-years. Is this thread of sufficient age to drink or buy cigarettes?
  16. A classic: A linguistics professor was lecturing to his class one day. "In English," he said, "a double negative forms a positive. In some languages though, such as Russian, a double negative is still a negative. However, there is no language wherein a double positive can form a negative." A voice from the back of the room piped up, "Yeah, right."
  17. Fault does not reside in your intentions or impulses. Your original post was thoughtful, considerate and constructive. I believe only possible negative aspect which might be laid at your door is if you were a bit naive in thinking that any thread might stay on-topic for its duration or that all people will be nice at all times. Such is not realistic hope especially since your name on a thread does at all times draw my interest because I find your posts are a highlight of this forum. To have me involved in thread increases chance of thread-drift and of my basic nature showing through. You created wonderful thread for discussion. I believe that you should set aside regrets and be thankful that forum is purely electronic and posters are not within physical reach of each other.
  18. I nominate the fight between: Virginia Grey and: Carol Thurston in: Swamp Fire (1946).
  19. My husband seasonally moderates forum for group of which he is a member. He works closely also in different capacity with code-writers who create user-interfaces for industry sites. It is by this that problems such as spam incursions are often discussed. It seems that consensus of Moderators and code-writers is that there will at all times be trade-off between ease-of-use and freedom-from-spam. Any measure which reduces possibility of spam increases problems of regular posting by normal users. Complicated registration and posting limits for new users discourage people from becoming users. Captchas are seen by users as bothersome and some browser settings conflict with them. I am sorry to say that there is no easy answer. Moderators and code-writers for this site have difficult decisions to make in attempting to balance security and user-friendliness.
  20. I did truly read the entire discussion. I saw opinions stated as facts as well as outright lies to support your position. Your own: "my-way-is-only-way judgement" is clearly shown in your statement: I visit a variety of forums daily. I have keen interest in user-interfaces and so have definitely noted differences. I have noted also that older software uses:oldest-first default. Newer and more user-friendly software uses: newest-first default because the software was written with the benefit of experience and education of what does not work well for the majority of users. My post may have been lacking in tact. That is a given because I am well known for not suffering fools gladly. Most-recent-posts-first is now standard in responsible forums which do not tree discussions because it is the most user-friendly. Simple fact. End of story.
