Is there an unfilmed book you'd like to see as a movie?
mikeroykirk replied to ClassicViewer's topic in General Discussions
I would love to see a sequel to the movie Colossus: The Forbin Project from the novel Colossus written by Dennis Feltham Jones he wrote two sequels The Fall of Colossus and Colossus and the Crab. It was announced that there was going to be a remake of The Forbin Project in 2007 but it never happened. -
I rank this movie with It's a Mad Mad Mad World, movies that are funny without being insulting and vulgar. I have been laughed at for watching Gilligan?s Island and Green Acres, but as silly and corny as they are if you want to spend some time forgetting oil spills, border wars and deficits movies and shows like them do the trick.

Why is the 1978 movie called Word Is Out on TCM?
mikeroykirk replied to mikeroykirk's topic in General Discussions
Do the replies get deleted with the post? I am the one that asked the question, why is this film on TCM. Since then I have changed my mind! And this was my response to Fred, Fred wrote *If you support the cause portrayed in this film, then you should condemn TCM for airing it, since it is way out of date. PBS would never air this show again, because, compared to today, the people in the film looked awful, even frightening.* I have to disagree with on this one. All if not every film on TCM is out of date that's part of the appeal. When you watch a bunch of teenagers singing songs that would put today?s teens to sleep you can't get more out of date than that. I got a kick watching the Tupper Ware infomercial a few weeks ago or the one condemning porn industry that was almost as graphic as an R rated movie. I wonder what the narrator would say today. But they capture and preserve a time we will never see again, when the world was very different. So if you look at Word Is Out from that perspective it does belong on TCM. I started all this because when first saw it scheduled on my cable program guide I thought it was a mistake, TCM and IFC are right next to each other so I thought somebody screwed up, It would not have been the first time. When I checked TCM.com schedule guide it was no mistake. My first reaction was why. Now I know why. My main goal is to keep the word classic in TCM. -

*A few good ones that they rarely show, and a multitude of mediocre movies that they've been showing repeatedly for a dozen or more years. It's not worth my time to search out the decent movies that they do show.* It sometime seems like they have been showing Bad Lieutenant every month for the last ten years. Does anybody know why a bunch of my last comments have disappeared? -

*Well, that is certainly an incendiary comment itself. But, it seems the film was met with a collective "shrug" by most members here.* The fuel on the fire was meant that if you don?t like that the movie is on once then you will like it even less because it is on twice. I am not a frequent contributor to this forum but I have noticed how sensitive some are. It seems that some are just waiting for a confrontation, they ignore what is said but they watch how it is said. And before somebody says I did the same thing with my comment that I felt I was being interrogated, that was meant to be funny. -

Not surprised at all. I'm just surprised it hasn't been locked yet. But apparently some members can be attacked and some clique members cannot. Carry on, indeed. Who and what are you talking about???? -

That?s the same old line as soon as somebody says something about the subject of homosexuality the word Homophobia is tossed out. In a way I?m glad the word finally came out. When I asked the question why is the film Word Is Out on TCM I did not care that subject was about homosexuality, it was because it was not the type of movie I felt should be on TCM. If it was about a bunch of heterosexuals talking about their lives I would have asked the same question. I have watched TCM since it first came on the air, I was sad to see AMC change its format; it showed some things that TCM didn?t. I know that some people think TCM is repetitive like showing Casablanca, North by Northwest and Rio Bravo almost every month so I don?t mind if it shows newer classic movies. I would love to see The Godfather trilogy or Schindler?s List to name a few on TCM but I don?t want to see Porky?s, 40 Year Old Virgin or a bunch of people talking about their lives. There are plenty of other cable channels for that kind of stuff. -

Who said it would be ok to show this movie because it would be on late at night and the kiddies would be in bed. It is on now at 8 and it will be on again at 4am. I thought it was only on at 4am. I guess TCM wants to make sure everybody has a chance to see it. Kind of like throwing gas on the fire. -

OK Great It?s on TCM as I said before why don't they have a special day of the week for movie of this type, and I don't me just about homosexuality. Just like Silent Sundays, TCM Underground and TCM Imports The can have movies that impacted society and made us look at thing differently . Sandwiching it between two movies from the 30s makes no sense even if it is part of a special salute to milestonefilms -

You did not quote back my entire responce you left this out. This is what you missed I have nothing against homosexuality themed movies such as The Children?s Hour and Victor Victoria to name a few. I have not seen the movie so I can?t say what it advocates but from what I have read about it I don?t think it should be on TCM that?s not to say that it can be shown on another channel like IFC, HBO, TNT or any other movie channel. The format of this movie does not fit with TCM. They have shown programs with social topics but they were related to movies or actors and how they have affected and shaped society. Now if they wanted to make or show a documentary about how homosexuals were portrayed in Hollywood or homosexual actors in Hollywood, fine. You need to read posts again!!! . I did not say because it is narrated by an actor that makes it ok, I said that film like Mitchum narrated and the films like the one about Tupper Ware are from a different time that we will never see again so that kind makes them classic and nostalgic they are from a simpler time. The movie Word Is Out can still be made today. -

'And how did you feel about a day of Jacques Cousteau documentaries" The documentaries should not have been on TCM; they were shown because of Ted Turner that's what National Geographic Channel is for. A movie about Jacques Cousteau Yes -

"No, I would not complain in the same way, I would just think that you were laughably brain-dead, given that TCM has done, even recently. Oh, wait, that one about drug addicts was narrated by Bob Mitchum, so I guess that makes it "related to Hollywood" I would consider the Bob Mitchum film a classic because they don't make them like that anymore Just like the film about Tupper Ware. Why the name calling? "So, if Word Is Out had some gay Hollywood actors in part of it or some narration by same, it would be okay" I wrote about this already in detail so the answer is yes. Look at my last reply to you -

If this movie, Word Is Out, was about drug addicts, alcoholics or anything else other than homosexuality they would not complain about my question in the same way on why it is on TCM. I would not want to see these subjects on TCM either unless they were related to Hollywood. -

You call it an agenda; I call it an opinion something that was not tolerated in NAZI Germany, Soviet Russia and China to name a few. So who wants to throw people in concentration camps??? -

Comparisons like that are made all the time. One minute were told never forget then someone says not funny or insensitive. Your comparisons to Gestapo and concentration camps in my opinion was not meant to be funny but just another way to express the way the question was asked. A lot of different people were put in concentration camps for different reasons in many countries before and after WWII The statement I found really insulting was? homosexuals were in the concentration camps, a fate I'm sure more than a few people around here would like to see repeated?. Complaining about an insult with another insult go figure. -

ValentineXavier Wrote: So, specifically, why do you think it is inappropriate for TCM? Because it is a documentary? Because it is 'only' 32 years old? Because it isn't well known, and therefore not a 'classic'? Because the content is about homosexuality? Because it is putatively 'liberal,' since it seems to advocate for gay rights? (That would seem to be Fred's objection) Because you feel ANY social or topical content is inappropriate for TCM? Some other reason? And I?m the one accused of asking a confrontational question? From the tone of your post I can feel the daggers flying at me. The way you wrote I feel as if I should be tied to a chair with a light in my face. Why is it if someone brings up something that involves gays everybody gets so sensitive and gets ready to be on the attack? If you read all my posts you would have the answers to your questions but I will give it another shot I have nothing against documentaries? as long as they are related to movies and related subjects. I prefer older movies but have nothing against certain newer movies. I don?t think it the type of classic for TCM if it is even a classic. I have nothing against homosexuality themed movies such as The Children?s Hour and Victor Victoria to name a few. I have not seen the movie so I can?t say what it advocates but from what I have read about it I don?t think it should be on TCM that?s not to say that it can be shown on another channel like IFC, HBO, TNT or any other movie channel. It does seem strange to me you go from a 1930 movie to a 1978 movie then back to a 1934 movie. If I just came to this country and never heard of TCM and turned the TV to TCM and this movie was on I would not think it is a classic movie channel. -

What makes you think I have an agenda? My concern is that I want TCM to stick to legitimate classic movies. There are plenty of outlets for this film to be shown. Just because I haven?t seen it does not mean I don?t know what it is about. You are the one bring politics in this conversation. As far as conservative not being creative/artistic types, you would be surprised how many creative/artistic types there are in present day Hollywood. Some choose to keep it to themselves, other like Jon Voight, Gary Sinise and Clint Eastwood do not and plenty more I recently found out that the late Dennis Hopper was a conservative and I cannot leave out John Wayne. You should learn not to pre judge people and show more tolerance. -

I did not mean to be confrontational it was a straight forward question. I don?t know how else it should have been worded. It is a little strange you have movies that night from the 30s then a film from 1978 with an extremely different subject. TCM should add a special subject night like they have Silent Sundays have a Modern Classic Mondays, movies from the 70s and 80s.
