  1. I did not mean to be confrontational it was a straight forward question. I don?t know how else it should have been worded. It is a little strange you have movies that night from the 30s then a film from 1978 with an extremely different subject. TCM should add a special subject night like they have Silent Sundays have a Modern Classic Mondays, movies from the 70s and 80s.

  2. Can someone explain why the 1978 movie called Word Is Out is on TCM? It?s about six gay men and gay women discussing their lives out of the closet. It?s scheduled for 6/24 at 4 am and it?s sandwiched between the 1930 movie The Bat whispers and 1934s The Barrett?s of Wimpole Street. This makes no sense, I have nothing against this movie but it seems strange the way it is scheduled and why is it on TCM? It would play better on IFC.

  3. .To all of you that feel this is a non topic why do you read the posts and participate in this topic? I think it is important to let TCM know how we feel about his comments and that I hope it is not a sign of things to come. Politics and movies go hand in hand. But I think Ben Mankiewicz comments crossed the line and got too personal. This is a letter I sent to TCM it may not make a differance but I urge anyone that feels the same to let TCM know how they feel.

I guess TCM doesn't care if it insults and alienates a large portion of their viewing audience. In your recent Now playing video Ben Mankiewicz mentions today's political commentators who shout the loudest or cries the most, he is obviously referring to Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and many other right wing commentators. He compares them to Andy Griffith's portrayal of a loud mouth, Lying TV entertainer Lonesome Rhodes in the movie A Face in the Crowd. A story of a man that rises from the streets to become a national television phenomenon with the trust of the entire nation only to be exposed for the fake that his is when he is caught on purpose by an opened mic saying what fools all the people are for believing in him. At which point his clam to fame is over.

Does Mr Mankiewicz really believe all the commentators he referred to not by name but it was clear who he meant, are on the same level as Lonesome Rhodes. Not only is his comparison wrong it is shameful, you must also be aware of the massive audience that Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck have, a good portion that are probably TCM viewers. In fact all Right wing hosts are enjoying incredible ratings. Does his comparison also include the left wing media? I doubt it! I have been a TCM viewer since the day it went on the air, I have enjoyed watching all the classic movies and documentaries on TCM over the years. While it is true that I have been annoyed by certain comments on TCM over the years this has to be the most insulting. I am sure that there are many viewers that agree with his comparison. But he has insulted a large portion of this nation and its audience. I know that TCM leans to the left politically, that has been clear to me for some time. But does it have to resort to insults and lies to its loyal viewers? Mr Mankiewicz is entitled to his opinion,a right he would not enjoy in many other countries. But what makes him right, there is no opposite opinion or chance for rebuttal. he says it in a smug way as if he knows better than anyone else. There was no need for this comparison only for Mr Mankiewicz?s need to make a point maybe partially out of jealously and his dislike for Beck,Limbaugh and their fans. This crosses the line and I believe there should a retraction and apology. I wont hold my breath for this but it would be nice and the right thing to do.

  4. Hey cubswin1984 I think you should listen to what he said again. I don't know how you would not think he crossed the line. Sorry if this talk of politics is not to your liking. I too watch TCM to get away from politics. But when it is thrown in my face I have no choice but to respond.

  5. I am 99.99% sure he is referring to Glenn Beck. I watch his show an he has on occasion shed some tears. Some say it is an act,I don't think so but that doesn't matter. What does matter is that when I watch a particular show that is aimed at a specific audience I know what to exspect.TCM is aimed at a broad audience with different tastes and views so they should keep that in mind. It's one thing to have an political opinion left or right.but their should be a balance so as to not insult or alienate your audience. They should stick to telling us about the movie and keep their opinions to a minimum.

  6. I love how some of you act like this is no big deal and that we should move on. Ben Mankiewicz comment had a tinge of real hatred and he should keep it to himself.Oh I forgot liberals don't hate.

  7. I just sent this letter to TCM
