I was gonna go with Elia Kazan, but I think it's probably a more recent director - I'll go with Steven Spielberg.
(PS - thanx for the support yesterday guys! I feel like I do playing Jeopardy...even if I'm wrong, if someone else guesses it too, I feel smart!)

I agree with feaito - I don't know why so many people insist on even making the comparison of TCM to AMC, as it's like apples & oranges anymore. I can pretty much trust the TCM programming with everything in it's lineup and know it's gonna be enjoyable. Perhaps a distant second would be Fox Movie Classics - but definitely NOT AMC...

I personally can't stand her music - that synthetic-techno thing is monotonous and repetitive. I was done with her when I saw that video of her prancing around on the deck of that ship in a thong while her own son was behind her on drums! *shudder*

*LMFAO* Hey (ex-)neighbor! What perfect timing 'coz I just caught that "Queer Eye" show today for the first time - I wouldn't have known what you meant this time yesterday! Mostly it was Rex's picks of low-budget, "B" movies he would pull up to promote (that did not recieve mainstream acclaim) that I first discovered him and dubbed him 'my movie advocate'.
And LTL, this is like the 6th time I've heard accolades for "Sunrise" - it's now on my "don't miss this one" list! Thanks.

What intersting synopses (synopsi?) you gave on the BP winners. I agree with you about 85% (on the few movies I've seen) and you have become my favorite film critic, replacing Rex Reed (whom I always thought of as "on my wavelength").
I had never been to this 'fools' site before, but it gave me several good suggestions for rentals! Thanks.

Floodkansas I know what you mean about arrogant people like that. Whenever I hear something like that )regarding Kate Hepburn), it totally wipes out every regard I ever held them in. Patti Page (of "Doggy/Window" fame) was once asked who her favorite singer was in a radio interview, and she replied, "well ME, of course!" Likewise, I saw Cher on a late-night talk show a few years ago, who was complaining her Oscar (for "Moonstruck") was only gold-plated - and I think she even said she used it for a doorstop. Can we say "HUMBLE"??

Slappy, I always felt a little 'under-qualified' for your queries, but I think I know this one. Walter Matthau?

Women:
Norma shearer - a fashion plate of '30s beauty
Gene Tierney, "Laura"- beautiful AND a lovely voice
Ingrid Bergman, "For Whom the Bell Tolls" - European features are flawless
Lee Remick - all through the '60s had a downhome, girl-next-door beauty
Men:
William Holden, from "Sabrina" to "COuntry Girl" to "Bridge/Kwai"-era - one handsome hunk!
Alan Ladd - because he looked like my dad
Robert Mitchum, "Holiday Affair" - while not stereotypically 'handsome', had this animal appeal to me!

I personally can't even think of a 'dieux-bond', much less a tres-bond.

Even though I'm probly 1 for 3, Sean Penn?

I think it was "The Shop Around the Corner" that I watched with her and Van Johnson just the other day. Seldom does a movie make me laugh out loud (especially comedies, for some reason!), but this was a hoot! I was belly-laughing at their introduction scene with the umbrella! I never saw Judy Garland in such a comic light as that film, and was totally impressed with her frustrated, "get-out-of-my-face" attitude of her character. *still giggling*

It was some other literary guy - I'll say Ernest Hemingway.

I guess my point was, How do we know who we're really talking to? We could have celebrities among us in chat rooms or bulletin boards, but I doubt it. I once spent an afternoon talking in a chat room with "Fran Drescher" before one of my family members set me straight and made me cynical.

P.S. Mongo I dont think your question was "posthumous-inclusive" - what I mean is a person can be on file for a body donation and still be alive. *S*

I'll say "Field of Dreams". even though I think it was released before '96...If the cards were older, I'd say that HBO-produced movie about the Satchel Paige biopic...

Donna Reed?

Donald Duck?

I almost forgot, from the great "Lolita" between newlyweds Shelley Winters and James Mason...
Charlotte:"Hum, you just touch me and I go limp as a noodle".
Humbert: "yes I know the feeling..."
-
Aide: "There is another Visa problem, Capitaine".
Capt. Renault: "Send her in".

I did a quick search through a couple forum archives using several key words as well as Mr. Osborne's so-called handle and found nothing (going back as early as May '01) that indicated a post from him - although I did find a couple old posts from you, Spencer, again reiterating "his picks"....
Just an observation.

Carl Yastrzemski?

Cary Grant?

I agree about Pollack. I'd rather see Rob Riener's "Top 5000" essentials.
And a great suggestion about keeping the forum current. So many people have cable now that there's no longer any "water-cooler chat" about shows on ABC, CBS, or NBC the previous night - the spectrum is too diverse! I propose we all watch "The Essentials" every Sunday night and discuss it in this forum.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Mongo, is it perhaps the anniversary of Franchot Tone's b-day too? I notice a mini-marathon of his films this morning.
Keep up the good work - always fun to read!
