You Be the Programmer for One Evening, Pick 4 Film Noirs
JamesJazGuitar replied to Lori3's topic in General Discussions
Based on the book Film Noir (Silver Ward), Ray Teal is in more noirs than anyone else (well anyone that got a credit in a noir movie). But yea, the guy had a steady career moving to TV and playing the Sheriff. -
Funny you mention Judge Judy; Yea, she clearly does feel she has some type of magic power to discern the truth. Overall I find Judy a hoot but this is one area where I disagree with her and her rulings. To be so arrogant that one believes they can determine who is telling the truth and who isn't. Of course maybe Judy should be assigned the Natalie Wood case.

Well I hope TCM keeps Ben and I believe they will. His role is likely to increase once RO retires. Either way, who the host is doesn't really matter too much to me. I come to TCM for the movies not the host.

I love Hutton, but a little does go a long way for me. For example, I love her in The Fleet Is In. Her scenes are great but then her 'act' doesn't have to carry the plot.
-
Yes, her best know serious film (Nora, not Norma which I have seen corrected). I also have mixed feelings about the movie. I want to like it more than I actually do!

LINDA DARNELL for Star of the Month October 2013

Interesting that Poitier had to go back to high school after being a doctor! -
Well I get a flu shot every year and since I have done so I have yet to get the flu. Could it be as simple as you're part of that 40% and I'm part of that 60%? I only point this out because I wouldn't want someone to NOT get a flu shot because of your personal experiences.

I agree with you helenbaby. Something about Ginger just does sit right with me as it relates to this movie, thus it is only a 'so so' Grant movie for me. PS: I also agree with finance as it relates to Charles Coburn. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Jan 20, 2013 3:00 PM Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Jan 20, 2013 3:02 PM

Oh, that face, that fabulous face. Whose is it?

Looks like Jessica Lange to me. -
I see what Kaye fans see in Danny and his performances. I enjoy his work, but I will admit that I feel towards him as I do Betty Hutton; a little goes a long way. So in a movie NOT build around these type of high energy stars they add a lot to the overall production. Their scenes or bits are often the highlight of the movie. But for me an entire movie does tend to kind of wear me down. Either way, a day for Kaye is well deserved.

I don't know who it is but she is nice to look at. I should of stated that in my prior post. The main reason I posted what I did was because I'm building my own photo library of my favorite stars. When I see pictures of someone that are clearly NOT the star, it throws me for a loop. e.g. in the Olivia DeHavilliand site there are pictures of Olivia Newton John! Oh it is a strange world.

I assume this photo was taken during the filming of Nora Prentiss since I recognize the top. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Jan 20, 2013 3:13 PM

Note that a lot of those 'images' websites for a specific star often have other people in them. I don't know why that is the case. Sometimes there is a connection between the two (e.g. a Fontaine photo on the Olivia images site), but often there is not. I think anyone can post pictures on these sites and thus they do the above to either 'mess with us' or because they are confused.

Odds Against Tomorrow intro mistake by Robert Osborne

clore: Maybe you should of added 'spoiler alert' at the start of your post. Since I'm 100% clued in on what you are talking about here (i.e. I have seen what you're refering to many times!), for someone new to this forum, they might not fully comprehend what you're getting at. I don't know if it is fair to provide these newcomers with the insight you did. I had to learn the hard way! As for this thread; since this new poster noted that RO is usually 'spot on', I see no ill intent here. I think he just wanted to set the record straight about a movie he really likes. Often that isn't the case with established posters when they create a negative thread related to RO, staff, scheduling, programming etc..... PS: Love this comment about the movie (what I consider the last noir of the noir era): One of the most starkly photographed of any film you can almost feel the chill of the weather being shown Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Jan 20, 2013 2:31 PM -
LIttlest Rebel with Shirley Temple makes blacks look stupid
JamesJazGuitar replied to WhyaDuck's topic in General Discussions
Well your use of the term "heritage gypsies" confused me (which is why I put the term in quotes). I didn't think there was such a thing as it related to a blood line, and you appear to agree since you say "Every country has "gypsies". But I didn't want to assume. I don't know much about the music of the Balkan gypsy culture. Again, the gypsy jazz I love is music from France. The gypsy culture there were nomads that traveled between France and Spain with no respect for borders. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Jan 19, 2013 3:44 PM -
Well I'm not surprised by the reply. Anytime someone isn't positive about someone you like they get a reply like this. The same old song. Go back and read my post. I had a lot of positive things to say about Julie as it relates to her being a singer and her recording. I just don't think she has the acting chops to be considered one of the BEST female singer/actress in classic movie. I even asked about classic movies she was in that showcased her acting. What did I get back? Little to nothing. This wouldn't be the case if I asked a fan of Garland, Dunne, Rogers, Durbin, etc... to recommend movies where the actress they felt was the 'best'. Of course I could say that when you can play jazz music you can comment on jazz, but that would be an immature response.
-
Well, my opinion is that London doesn't have the acting credentials to be one of the 'best female singer/actress in classic movies'. i.e. just not enough classic movie roles. Note, the person who started this thread is the one that listed 'classic movies', not me. That means TV roles are out. Yes, one doesn't have to be cast in mostly musicials (many people here rate Dunne very high but Dunne, as an actress, has a lot of NON musicial film roles), but, at least to me, one does have to have been both a singer and actress in classic movies.

With regards to "heritage gypsies": So you're ancestors are from the area between Spain and France? I love to play gypsy jazz music (Django Reinhardt being the most famous in this genre), and I go to that area every few years to see the local musicians. -
I can't get pass the hairdo. Too much like Liz in Virginia Woolf.

TCM scheduling genius still at work!
JamesJazGuitar replied to musikone's topic in General Discussions
Yea, that really isn't how I feel about Raft. The only reason I posted this here is that the George Raft Day thread just disappeared. I used the Forum Search feature and couldn't find it there either. But I can tie your expectation of quality (some would say perfection) from TCM with that of Raft. Now if I understood your position on Raft, to me it looked liked you were being very forgiving, when it comes to Raft, especially when the other WB male stars where mention. I have a high standard when it comes to an actor and Raft just doesn't meet that. Raft was clearly above Bogie in the eyes of Jack Warner, but by the end of the 40s, Raft career wasn't in the same league. But as you said, maybe it was because he turned down so many movies that ended up being solid "classics". I do agree with you that we should expect the best one can offer and sometimes TCM does miss that mark. -
Better Grant films? The ones listed are some of my favorites (other than Lonely Heart and Monkey Business). Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Jan 17, 2013 6:16 PM

Sloppy, lazy, indifferent perhaps, but never terrible. Kind of how I feel about George Raft! (oh just joking!). -
I really like Along Came Jones and it is a somewhat unique movie. One could say it is just played for laughs but the casting of Dan Duryea as the heavy makes the serious moments, well serious. Dan is great at playing the mean guy and thus there is a balance between the light and somewhat campy moments and the standard action ones typical for a western. Young is really charming and was perfect in the role. It is also nice to see Cooper making fun of his western hero persona. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Jan 17, 2013 4:02 PM

Note that Kyle posted his pictures as a response to my comment about a concern where this thread MIGHT be heading: in the direction of making a certain group of people (modern blacks), look like fools. Hey, maybe my feelings were an overreaction. But I did get the feeling of 'look at THEM'. So Kyle posted pictures of other groups to show that it wasn't just ONE group that has changed but the vast majority of society. I admit I'm sensitive to this because until I was 24 or so I had really long hair and I didn't dress proper (as it relates, say, to a business environment). But once I got into my profession I realized I would advance quicker is I 'fit in'. So us former hippies that are now upstanding citizens tend to react strongly when we see pictures of young people where it is implied that because of how they look TODAY, they are destined to end up being loser. Ok, I stand corrected. Wow, top 5. Since I respect you're opinion (i.e. we often have similar taste), maybe I should invest a little more time getting to know Julie as an actress (my knowledge of her is limited to jazz since that is my first passion). What are a few of the movies you recommend where Julie sings and give a great acting performance?
