The use of the happy face is a way of saying something in the 'spirit of "tongue-in-cheek" good nature'. Thus there was nothing to agree or disagree with.

I guess when you say 'would not of happened' you really mean 'would not of happened on the scale that it did'. I took 'would NOT of happened' literally as in; this type of event (a mass killing) would NOT of happened. But it appears you really meant; this type of event WOULD STILL happen BUT less people would be killed. The part about the type of weapons changes nothing as it relates to my interpetation of your intital words; i.e how was I to know that by mentioning the type of weapons this was code for 'on the scale that it did'. Anyhow the POV you express here is the same as mine and if that initial post had said 'on the scale that it did', I would of said I agreed from the start. -
Quality of Prints Shown Recently on TCM

Wow, Fred what wonderful info. I had no idea that a director would shoot a night scene in the day and than use exposure technique to make it appear like night. -

No problem, thanks for the advice. I just wondered if this was Wood in her late teens trying to show Hollywood she was a women now (and oh, was she ever), or if this was during the 60s when she had already made the successful transition from child teen star to women star. As for the latest picture my gut guess was also Barbara Eden, but then she really wasn't much of a movie star and clearly not a studio era one, so I talked myself out of that one! -

Ok, I can NOW see that it is my gal Wood. Do you know what year this was taken and what for? e.g. if for a promo for a movie, what movie? -
I just got back from the store with a few bottles of Gnarly Head wine (California Cab). (I had $2.00 off coupons!). The label says 'Bold, sophisticated, with a hit of gnarly'. I have no idea what gnarly means!

Well if this thread is locked up by the Admin it will not be over politics but instead the type of back and forth between posters, that just can't get along, we are seeing now -

I'm playing this game (which I love BTW), by not thinking about my choice for more than 10 seconds. i.e. going with my gut. The pictures reminds me of Jane Meadows but looking really sexy instead of innocent. -
Well Tracy Lord didn't really give anyone a look of love (she was a cold hearted women), until the last scene! Which Tracy did you like better: Kate or Grace? As for having it with Hate; Well there is a funny line about that from the TV show Get Smart; Max is talking to a therapist and the therapist says he has to go to a meeting. Max asks him what type. The therapist says he is going to a meeting to discuss hate groups and that there are just too many of them. The punch line is that he tells Max; we are a group that hates hate groups, we hate hate!. The look on Max's face is the final punch line.

Trust me here; I never take your post seriously. (no offensive, just that Dargo and you are the town jokers here and I mean that 100% in a good way). I just couldn't stop myself from mentioning how bogus the term 'classic' is as it relates to how many movies TCM should or should not show from certain eras. Since you mention countries like the UK and this reminded me about how Morgan keep bringing up other countries like Australia; Yea gun control laws did have an impact but these nations didn't have the massive stockpile of guns the US already has in the hands of private citizens. I see that as a major differences and thus the analogies don't really 'fit' in my view. Again, like I posted before, I'm not against stronger gun control laws but I do admit I'm a cynic as it relates to how effective they would be given all the existing guns already out there. -

RaquelVixen: You consider the post by DarkBlue, right below your comment 'ugly'? Sorry I just don't see it. I went back to look at his original post and while it was political (but no more than mine), it wasn't ugly or offensive as far as I could see. I just don't see where the rancor is in his comments. (PS: Is the spell checker here the worst one in ever? I spelled offensive, without one 'f' (ofensive), and the choices it gave me were nothing close to this? The spell checker in Word automatically fixed it (i.e. added that missing 'f'). -
Gladys Cooper is a women I really have a lot of respect for. I have to admit that I had seen My Fair Lady a few times before I realized that this was the same women that had been the mom of Bette Davis in Now Voyager. Those films are 22 years apart and I don't see much change in Gladys in all those years. I got confused because she plays older than she really was in Now Voyager and died as a result of old age. I guess I forgot that she was just acting!

Danny Kaye version of Balls Of Fire is Really Bad.
JamesJazGuitar replied to WhyaDuck's topic in General Discussions
Well we can agree to disagree here. While I believe Mayo is better looking than Stanwyck, Stanwyck is a lot more sexier than Mayo in BOF. Mayo looks great but her acting is somewhat limp (flat), while Stanwyck, well, she is a ball of fire in this movie! Danny Kaye is funnier than Cooper but his type of 'funny' just doesn't work here as well as the low key Cooper. Thus the combo of a low key Cooper with a ball of fire Babs works a lot better, given the plot, than the inverse we see in the Kaye version; (high energy Kaye and low key Mayo). Then, as others have pointed out, there are the character actors. Dan Duryea as the heavy was perfect and of course there are the 7 dwarfs who I find a lot more enjoyable. BUT on the last point I agree with you (I have to don't I since I'm a jazz guitar player!). Yea, I do love the music angle but I still find the word play in BOF very funny. Also, when you say 'on a similar note' related to Philly Story and High Society; Well High Society is about music and Grace is better looking than Kate Hepburn, so based on 'a similar NOTE' (yes pun intended), shouldn't you like High Society more? I prefer Philly Story a lot more but I do love the music scenes from High Society. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Dec 18, 2012 2:47 PM Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Dec 18, 2012 2:50 PM -

Sorry I didn't mean to insult you but I still believe what you initially posted isn't close to being accurate. Again, you used the phase 'would NOT of happened'. While I agree changes to laws could be made to reduce the damage caused by the type of people who do these things (which I mention in my reply), there is NO evidence of any kind that changes to laws would prevent these type of events from NOT happening. Thus I agree with you 100% when you post "it would not have been the terrible event that it was" but that comment is a lot different than the one you initially posted of 'would NOT of happened'. -
I agree with you that it the actor's persona, especially Cooper in Love In The Afternoon, than their age (but I see that my post was confusing). I noticed this in Design For Living. While I enjoyed the movie very much, Copper as an artist and at the same time a hot head (i.e. a guy ready to use his fists first), just didn't fit. Like I said, while Sabrina is a great movie to me the Bogie Hepburn combo barely works. While you mention that Bogie and Bacall combo works (and it does for sure), in Sabrina Bogie does look older than he was in those 40s movies with Bacall and while he fits the role of a corporate leader, Hepburn with her Paris sizzle, just doesn't match well with Bogie. Of course the entire plot is based around a guy like Bogie learning how to live life but one gets the feeling the way Bogie plays this that he really never knew how to live life to begin with. Cary Grant would of given the vibe that he just loss that feeling thus it would be more believable that Hepburn would be able to bring that back.

Morgan is so immature I don't understand why CNN has him on. Anytime he has someone on that he disagrees with he either just yells at them or he gets that dumb look of disbelieve. He doesn't make any attempt to understand (not agree with) the POV of the other side. He is worst than the guys on Fox! -
Why repeat the same old line about 'classic'? If TCM's goal is to show 'classic' movies, than of course it should show movies made in the last 20 or so years, since there are 'classic' movies from that time period. The use of the term 'classic' leads to a meaningless vague discussion in my view. Using Studio era movie leads to a very specific discussion; what percentage of TCM programing should be devoted to NON Studio-Era movies? My wish would be no more than around 15%. I don't think the discussion of something specific is boring, but discussions about what the definition of 'classic' is, are very boring.

Well I just have to respond when someone makes a statement that is so factually incorrect, as in: . This horrible slaughter would not have happened if the killer had not been able to access a certain type of weapon. Here is just one example of how the killer using standard non semi-automatic guns, could of killed or harmed just as many; Enter the school with a box of home made fire bombs. OK, maybe not as many would of died but still, killing would NOT of been prevented. Thus the 'would not have happened' line is just not factual. PS: I don't own a gun, never have, and never plan too. If people wish to push for more gun control, go for it, but I really don't think it will have much of an impact UNLESS the government was to remove ALL existing guns except single shot type rifles. This 'war on guns' would end up like the war on drugs in that the majority of people attested for violating the law would be citizens that otherwise obey the law. I think you controlled yourself very well in that Stanwyck forum and because you did the Stanwyck fans (I'm one), were more open to listen to what you had to say. But yea, that took some guts! As for this sad event, well one could say that even saying 'I don't see the current tragedy as a political issue' could be interpreted as political commentary since that is the type of statement we are hearing from the NRA. (but I wish to be clear that I'm not implying any intent on your part here). Anyhow those with a political agenda will see politics in everything and anything. -
I agree with you here especially the comment 'this is the very heart of the film'. While Mr. Matuchek lost 'it' for a while, we end up seeing his humanity and the type of person he is at his core. The ending also exposes this. He doesn't wish to be alone on Christmas. So when he finds his newest clerk has no family in the town this creates the perfect moment; he can give this young man a dinner he couldn't afford, and at the same time not be alone. These slight touches are what makes a fairly simple light comedy rise above. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Dec 17, 2012 5:09 PM

Well if one checks out other websites (e.g. CNN forums associated with each newstory), one can see that issues quickly escalate, generally into one of two areas (based on my experience); politics and race, regardless of the newstory topic. The same over the top (to be polite), users just cannot stop themselves from projecting hate. They go to these sites just for that purpose. Now we don't have those type of users here BUT is that because we all (generally), try to avoid those topics OR is it because we are just more mature, nicer people? I tend to think the former; i.e. if we were told there would be NO moderation of any kind, my gut tells me this forum would end up like those others (to some degree). FYI: Fox closed down their user forum website because of too much hate, threats of violence and other insane behavior. I know this because those users go to the CNN forum and really lower the level of discussion to a point there really was no discussion. -
"Design For Living"...Well, that was interesting.
JamesJazGuitar replied to ElectricBarbarella's topic in General Discussions
Design For Living was a unique film and very open sexually even for a pre-code. Funny and good film but I didn't like the part where she married Horton's character. It just wasn't in line with Hopkin's character. -
LINDA DARNELL for Star of the Month October 2013
JamesJazGuitar replied to Arturo's topic in General Discussions
Interesting that Zanuck was concerned about making Darnell too sexy in the eyes of the film going public. Compare that to what Warner was trying to do with someone like Ann Sheridan with his Oomph girl PR stunt.
