You Be the Programmer for One Evening, Pick 4 Film Noirs
JamesJazGuitar replied to Lori3's topic in General Discussions
Well the term 'sucks' doesn't communicate much as it relates to why you hate these movies so much. -
I think where TCM failed as it relates to the Iron Petticoat is that they are promoting a lost film (a film that hasn't been available to the public in decades) but forgot that the quality of the film still matters. So while I commend TCM for assisting in bringing to light 'lost' films, in the future they should focus more on the quality of the lost films. As for those thinking that TCM motives were greed (to make a buck), well, first none of us here know what TCM motives were, BUT if their motive was to make a buck the odds are they will fail with the Iron Petticoat (based on the feedback we see here as well as my own opinion of this film). The only way one could make money off of a movie like the Iron Petticoat would be to NOT show the film but promote the DVD, the fact the film is lost, the stars involved etc.... Classic movie fans might of purchased the DVD site unseen, but once fans see this movie, it only reduces the odds they would purchase it.

I think it is modeling; i.e. the people saying AXE for ASK do so because they were raised by people who did so or hung out with a group where a majority of people that did so. So it is deliberate but many not willful.

Based on the replies, I agree with Sanfan and you that since one can assume this was the first time the guy (Garbo's dancing partner), had heard the word, it is NOT logical that he would change how he pronounces it. I have seen people hear my wife pronounces something (correctly) and than then these same people say it incorrectly after that, but these are with words those people have heard in the past. i.e. they have an existing habit of pronouncing those words incorrectly. So what we have in 2 Face Women is a sign of weak direction. i.e. the director should of said 'CUT' and told the actor to correct himself.

What I see here is more and more speculation. Anyhow, if TCM does have some type of 'master plan' to make money, I have no problem with this as long as the 'dead time' between movies doesn't increase to promote products. Typically I turn to TCM just before the start of a movie so I can avoid what TCM shows between movies. But if Iron Petticoat is as bad as people say it is and TCM's master plan is able to find a lot of suckers to buy the DVD (after watching the movie on TCM no less) then to me this reflects more on those suckers than it does TCM.
-
If the goal of TCM was to sell more copies of the DVD for Iron Peticoat, wouldn't it be best for TCM to mention the movie and the DVD over and over again but NOT show the movie (or only show it once)? i.e. by showing the movie multiple times TCM reduces the need for someone to buy the DVD.

How does one know that the change wasn't intentional? It could of been done to show that the Garbo character was more sophisticated than the gentleman. Like Garbo my wife is from Europe and she speaks 4 languages so she will pronounce foreign type of words as if they were spoken in the native language. But often many Americans will pronounce them using the English vowel sounds. e.g. I as I instead of 'E' for an Italian word.

Well in Night and Day Woolley plays himself. I assumed you knew this and thus mentioning that movie was a wise-cracking reply to my comment that Woolley was good at playing an annoying character. Anyhow, I cannot think of a character he played in a movie that wasn't annoying. So maybe you're right; it was just type-casting!

I enjoy these Sinbad movies. Yea, I know there cheap and the acting isn't the best but I still like them. I guess the reason is that they make me feel like I'm 15 again. So while I can clearly see the flaws in these productions I still enjoy the experience.

Well fiance of course Woolley was annoying in Night and Day but like I said before it is because of the characters he plays. Now, what character did Woolley play in Night and Day????

Thanks to TB and you for the info. I just saw the episodes with Guy Williams and the gal Adam was going to marry and I wondered if the plot line related to Roberts leaving the show. Until the end, the way the plot was going it looked like Adam would get married, move somewhere far away and thus be out of the picture. But once that didn't happened I wondered how they did explain where the oldest son went the next season. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Nov 26, 2012 6:14 PM

Ok I can see why one would feel Woolley was an annoying actor, but often his character was scripted to be annoying or gruff; e.g. Man Who Came to Dinner, Since You Went Away, and The Bishop Wife. Thus in this regard Woolley was more like Shelly Winters. June Allyson was annoying when playing characters where the plot did NOT call for her character to be annoying or a pain in the rear. This puts Allyson at a very different level (and not a good one!).

Well Sepiatone, are music trip during the 70s was similar. I also went from prog rock into jazz fusion, but from there I went to bebob jazz. I also went from a rock guitar player to a jazz guitar player. I also got into classic (studio era) movies while learning to play jazz standards. As I got into composer like Cole Porter I decided to check out the movies that features these songs. This lead to a connection between what is now two of my major movie music interest. Now when I play rock I mostly play British invasion stuff (Kinks, Beatles, Stones, Who,,,)

The Bishop's Wife is the one holiday movie I like. I don't celebrate the holiday (yea, I'm really a Scrooge), but The Bishop's Wife gets to me. I feel it has a good message without being preachy. I also like the Monty Woolley character since in some ways I'm a lot like him as it relates to the holiday season. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Nov 26, 2012 3:24 PM

Thanks for the info. Well now I'm interested in seeing season 7 and 8. I assume plots involved more around the characters of Dan, Michael and Loree. I watch Bonanza now TV Land and a lot of the plots involve Pernell (it appears more so than the other 2 bros, but that could just be based on the season TV land has shown the last month or so).

I see Scarlett as a dispicable, self-absorbed winner. As for her future; she will marry another man of wealth that she doesn't love.

DOES EVERYONE HERE KNOW ABOUT THIS ?
JamesJazGuitar replied to misswonderly3's topic in General Discussions
Were they all from the same person? Please don't say who that person is (I assume you wouldn't, but just in case), but you really had that many in your in-box. I get about 1 every 2 or 3 months. -
Eva Maria Saint was a good female guest host.

I have used the personal message system from time to time. A few times it has been used when there was a disagreement with someone at this site where a message was sent to me from that person. In these cases that air was cleared, we decided to get along and thus the feature was useful. (in both cases the issue was a misunderstanding of one's 'style' as it relates to having discussions). Also I have received messages from people saying something like 'hang in there, the problem is with the other person'. I was planning on sending one to fiance related to this but then I decided it wasn't necessary. Don't wish to put my foot in my mouth. -
They sang their own songs. . . .or didn't.
JamesJazGuitar replied to slaytonf's topic in General Discussions
I also posted this but I believe now it is a myth. Williams did sign the song for Hawks but the final version is Bacall according to her book; By Myself. (pages 101 - 103). -
Wow nice work if you can get it. I'm sure you had some great experiences. I'm only an amateur musician. I love to play the standards and back up singers. Of course this means I have to play the song in the key the singer wants. Yea, I know I was told to learn to play in all 12 keys!

I don't use the ignore function but I do know of one of two posters that don't like me. I don't know if they have one 'ignore'. One said she set me to 'ignore' but than she made references to one of my replies to another poster. Thus I don't know how the 'ignore' feature works. Does it only 'block' direct replies or ALL post from that person? Anyway as for Sex and the Single Girl; Yea, I understand why people fault the movie and while I agree with their take I still find things to enjoy about the movie. Ok, it is mostly just Ms. Woods. Her overall look is stunning in this film.

TB; Do you know how Bonanza got rid of the Pernell Roberts' character? I.e. How did one of the bros just 'go away'? I just wonder how the series made the transition. I know that Candy kind of replaced Roberts as it relates to plots involving around his character but I don't recall if there were any transition episodes. e.g. did Roberts' character die? did he go away back east? I mean it wasn't like his character was just a ranch hand and they could just say he moved on.
