  1. In some cases the artist putting out music "in the old day" had more skills but in most cases there was still a corporate machine behind them. With the death today of Davy Jones, the Monkeys are an example of this. But even The Beatles were commercial (e.g. those collar less suits), but they had major skills. There are artist today with those type of skills, one just has to seek them out. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Feb 29, 2012 5:50 PM
  2. If Eli Wallach was given that award all he would say is 'but why, why'!
  3. To me this thread is an example of Fox news type mentality. First this rumor isn't a good example of the country going downhill even if these awards are someday made in China. Second, the only reason that business man created this story is to give him leverage when dealing with the academy over the cost of creating the Oscars. As others pointed out, there are likely to be other businesses that would create them here in the USA.
  4. Well all an award does is measure the views of those that determine (vote) for an award. For an entertainer being a favorite of 'the people' is NOT a dubious honor. It is a bread and butter honor. Note that for some actors being a favorite of the academy is a dubious honor.
  5. I'm not so sure about the 'pound for pound' view. First that band had a lot of members and second some of them weren't thin. So in the aggregate their pounds were up there. I would say Cream was the best talented group pound for pound!
  6. Hey, I'm the Olivia nut around here, and I only picked two of her films (Its Love I'm After, Strawberry Blond), as part of my four.
  7. Well the language spoken by many in Good Will Hunting isn't english. It is some type of slang used by Red Sox fans!
  8. Hoagy is one of my favorite songwriters. Many of his songs have unique and 'cool' chord progressions. He would be an American great only for his songwriter but of course he was also an actor and entertainer.
  9. Funny how things sometime 'connect': Yesterday I wouldn't of known who Roger Pryor was but just today at CFU someone wrote about the Carole Lombard movie Lady by Choice. So I got my Movies of Carole Lombard book out and read about this movie. There was Carole in two photos with Pryor who stared in this movie. So then I come here and see a picture of Pryor!
  10. Holiday is my favorite of the Grant Hepburn movies and that is saying a lot since all of their movies were very good. I also picked it because it isn't shown as much as Baby or The Philly Story. Holiday is somewhat of a message movie but it does so in a very lighthearted way. I just love how Cary and Kate connect in that one. Love your other choices. You will noticed I picked 2 Bette Davis movies. Both of these I picked because they are not shown as often as movies like Now Voyager or Dark Victory, and also because of Leslie Howard. An actor that wasn't overshadowed by the great Davis.
  11. I agree with you about Crawford and Francis being the most glamorous stars of the 30s. I guess we both define (view) glamorous the same way. It isn't that these gals where the most beautiful but a combination of beauty, style, what they wear and how they wear it, and just how one carries themselves and the impact they make when they enter the room.
  12. This is a song I just starting playing the last few days. I have heard it many years ago, but never played it. It is a song classic movie fans can related to. In fact I had to explain to people why it is called No Myth (well why I think it is). I believe it relates to Heathclif and the fact that Cathy coming back to him is No Myth. http://itunes.apple.com/us/artist/michael-penn/id279073
  13. I have seen Hold Back the Dawn on TCM. Very good movie. They should of shown it when they did their salute to Goddard a while back. The Ladd version of The Great Gatsby is a movie I would really like to see. i.e. it is a movie I have read about for years now but still have NOT seen!!! So say that Ladd is the best Gatsby out of the 3. Maybe so, but how can I know if I cannot see the film.
  14. I agree with you here. Marshall just brings something more to these low keyed roles that Brent, especially in films designed around the talents of Bette Davis.
  15. I don't know if Harlow can be classified as glamorous expect in a few of her movies where she played a rich gal. In most of her best films she is a gal from the other side of the tracks (even if she ends up being rich).
  16. Are you joking here? I only ask because 3 of the 4 movies are on the movies TCM plays most often thread. Hey, great list of movies but I had just read that and then I see this. My list would be: The Petrified Forest It's Love I'm After Holiday The Strawberry Blond
  17. Doesn't Northwest mean the Airline? One goes north on Northwest airline? That was my understanding. Yes, the movies listed here are shown very often. At least most of them are movies I really like. (I'm not so HOT about on one of them).
  18. Based on what I read Bogart really went out of his way to help her and try to make the marriage work. He meet her while making the movie Marked Women, which they were both in along with Bette Davis (the Davis return from exile in England movie). He did do some of his best work while married to her. Maybe it was because his home life just wasn't that fun.
  19. Of course the lost of someone with so much potential is part of her story, but part of her story is also how she messed it up. I'm sure there will be a film about her life but my guess is that her devoted fans will not like this film since it will focus as much on the negative as the positive.
  20. When someone famous dies the amount of media coverage is based on many things, but the key ones are: how famous or important that person was, how they lived their life and how they died. Using a scale from 1 - 10, for these 3 items I would rate Houston a 6, 9, and 9. Ok the first one, how famous or important is very subjective. So I can see fans of Houston saying she should be a 9 or 10 here (some in the media have called her the greatest female singer of the 20th century), but I say 6 because the number of people that like her musical genre was limited. The other two items are less subjective. I gave her a 9 on the 'how they lived their life' category because of her prolonged history of drug use and her relationship with Bobby Brown (I mostly know about this because of jokes I have heard Kathy Griffith make in her live act, but this is an example of how NON musical items keep Houston in the pop culture). She also gets a 9 for how she died since there is mystery in how she died and the timing of the death. Based on these rankings I can see why the media would spend so much time on her. What I find silly is how some fans appear to NOT understand how the 2 and 3 categories apply to the amount of media coverage. For example, if Sir Paul Mccartney was to die a natural death, I would hope we could agree that he would be a 10 on the famous scale, but a 1 and 1 (or very low score) on the other two. He might get less coverage than Houston by the media. To me this is understandable if one accepts what I'm saying about media coverage.
  21. My friend, who lives in Lone Pine (right off of Whitney Portal road), used to work at the museum and he said it was the original car. It is one of the key items the museum has according to him. He has taken me to many of the places films where shot. e.g. Gunga Din, etc...
  22. If one goes to Lone Pine California in the eastern Sierra there is a museum with the car Bogie was driving up Whitney Portal road.
  23. This is a Warner Bro character actor. His best know role was as a waiter in Casablanca. He is the guy with the big cheeks. He is in many scenes in the movie (Rick ask him to take Ilsa home after the secret meeting is broken up).
  24. Very nice balanced statement. Being the friend or the family member of someone that is abusing themselves isn't easy.
  25. I would add Ronald Colman and George Sanders to your list. Edited by: jamesjazzguitar on Feb 20, 2012 1:58 PM
