Elvis gets penalized by me for not writting his own material and for not growning as a musician.

But yes, prior to 1963 most pop acts didn't write their own songs or play an instrument. The Monkeys came out after 1963.

Take all the other real bands that came out in around the same time. They wrote most of their songs, played the majority of the instuments and sang most of the parts. The Who, Kinks, Stones, and on and on.

The Monkeys were cooked up in a lab. Hey, "they" (what was released under their name), had some nice songs and I play a few of them but they don't come close in terms of talent to at least 50 other bands I could name that made music during the 60s.

In the 31 Days of Oscar treads my advise was that TCM set aside two weeks for Oscar and two weeks for films related to black history month. But like any of TCM promos relate to racial or cultural content a black history month type of event would generate some controversy.

Most of the movies made by the major studios that feature black actors feature them in stereotyped roles. Would the black community welcome that? If TCM limited the movies to those with positive black characters (e.g. no Hattie as a maid), would there be enough high quality material to show and would the general TCM audience welcome this?

  3. Sorry but I don't think The Monkey belong in the R&R hall of fame. For example, take the link you put up. All of that music was played by studio musicians. Most of their best songs were written by others. I can see putting Don Kirschner in the hall for inventing them but not these lads.

  4. I don't think we really disagree here but just might view what is going on from a different angle.

You are right that in the 'old days' the record companies would seek out the talent and promote it, but that is what confused me in your initial approach since you mentioned that today the corporations run things. To me the corporations (most record companies are corporations, especially ones that promoted Rock acts), had more control over what we heard 'back in the day' than they do now. i..e. one couldn't get their song played on the radio unless they had a deal with a record company (again for rock, since country and blues acts could get some local airplay in limited areas).

With the Internet we have access to 'small' acts. This just wasn't possible in the old days except for local bands. Then record exec would pick up this local band and mode it into a major act. Note that Who record 'Sell Out'. My point, talent has had to 'sell out' in the old days just like they have to today, BUT today an artist does have the option of self-promotion via the internet.

While I agree with you that Gene's acting is very weak in the picture I don't think it was because the role was a "crummy, thankless, rotten role", but we do agree it was a very difficult one.

I believe the reason Gene is bad is just because she was inexperienced and the role was a very difficult one to pull off, especially in the later scenes when she was an addict (yea to gambling but we really know what Poppy was on). Pulling off that type of transition isn't easy and it takes a lot of experience and Gene just wasn't ready for that type of role. This is the type of role that can make an actress, but Gene just wasn't ready.

Take the scene where she is outside Omar's place and pretends to hurt her ankle. This is an acting within acting scene. One wants to look like they are faking it (since they are), BUT in a subtle way. There was nothing subtle about her performance in that scene. It was bad and it shows, but again, that type of scene isn't easy.

But hey, she looked like a million dollars! Yea, that was the easy part for her. She is in my Top 10 looking great in a film category for this one; e.g. Liz in A Place In the Sun, Ava for The Killers, Rita for Gilda, etc...

  6. In some cases the artist putting out music "in the old day" had more skills but in most cases there was still a corporate machine behind them. With the death today of Davy Jones, the Monkeys are an example of this. But even The Beatles were commercial (e.g. those collar less suits), but they had major skills.

There are artist today with those type of skills, one just has to seek them out.

  7. Oh, I didn't know that. I do know people that don't like her because they think she is anti-American or something along those lines. I love her. I watched the show she did with Batalie and it was great. Regardless of how one feels about her when she talks, her dress and her overall look at the Oscars was classic but fashion forward at the same time.

  8. To me this thread is an example of Fox news type mentality. First this rumor isn't a good example of the country going downhill even if these awards are someday made in China.

Second, the only reason that business man created this story is to give him leverage when dealing with the academy over the cost of creating the Oscars. As others pointed out, there are likely to be other businesses that would create them here in the USA.

  9.

Well all an award does is measure the views of those that determine (vote) for an award.

For an entertainer being a favorite of 'the people' is NOT a dubious honor. It is a bread and butter honor. Note that for some actors being a favorite of the academy is a dubious honor.

  10. Funny how things sometime 'connect': Yesterday I wouldn't of known who Roger Pryor was but just today at CFU someone wrote about the Carole Lombard movie Lady by Choice. So I got my Movies of Carole Lombard book out and read about this movie. There was Carole in two photos with Pryor who stared in this movie.

So then I come here and see a picture of Pryor!

Holiday is my favorite of the Grant Hepburn movies and that is saying a lot since all of their movies were very good. I also picked it because it isn't shown as much as Baby or The Philly Story. Holiday is somewhat of a message movie but it does so in a very lighthearted way. I just love how Cary and Kate connect in that one.

Love your other choices. You will noticed I picked 2 Bette Davis movies. Both of these I picked because they are not shown as often as movies like Now Voyager or Dark Victory, and also because of Leslie Howard. An actor that wasn't overshadowed by the great Davis.

  12. I have seen Hold Back the Dawn on TCM. Very good movie. They should of shown it when they did their salute to Goddard a while back.

The Ladd version of The Great Gatsby is a movie I would really like to see. i.e. it is a movie I have read about for years now but still have NOT seen!!! So say that Ladd is the best Gatsby out of the 3. Maybe so, but how can I know if I cannot see the film.
