  1. The law changes are designed mostly to prevent copy writen material from being viewed in foreign countries. China steals a lot of US copy written material. That hurts US producers of content.

Yes, it may also impact US Citizens that steal (yes, it is stealing), copy written material from sites like YouTube.

The question is very basic; Should creators and owners of copy written material be paid?

It seams a lot of people beleive they should be able to view copy writer material for free OR that the Website (YouTube), can make money off the ads but NOT pay anything to the actual owner of the copy written material. Again, to me that is stealing.

Website owners are saying it is free speech. That is just their excuse to make money off something owned by someone else, without having to pay a dime.

Right after I saw My Favorite Year (which I have seen many times), I posted that same line under 'my favorite lines'. Great minds think alike! I just love that movie. First because I'm a major fan of Flynn and De Havilland, and it is clear to me that Swan is a Flynn type character. When he is out with Ben and talking about 'the one that got away' it is clear that the script is talking about how Flynn and De Havilland were in love but never lovers. Of course when they show Swan in an old movie it looks just like Robin Hood, with a De Havilland type gal.

Since the above sticks to the topic of this thread, I'm going to address the Niners game. That last 5 minutes was the most exciting football I have ever seen. I'll pulling for the Niners all the way.

  3. With regards to The Shop Around the Corner, isn't that more heavy on Rom than Com?

For example, compare it to Bringing Up Baby. That leans way more towards Com than Rom (of course some might say it is a screwball comedy and not even a romantic comedy,, frankly I don't believe these are two separate genres but that is a topic for another day!).

Shop is very sweet and light comedy and a great movie, but still to me more Rom than Com.

While I agree about the ridiculousness of race distinctions (except for medical treatment based on actual DNA and other generic factors), the primary driver is self classification and is coming from race leaders and other groups associated with a race.

For example, all the drama about Tiger Woods and what race he was, was driven more by the African American community than 'whites'. Tiger (whose mom is 100% asian), didn't wish to play the race game, but was told he wasn't be proud of his African American background. So he caved. Thus I don't agree at all with your " A family considers itself "black" because of standards defined by "whites".

Instead there are many personal reasons as well as cultural ones why families or individuals wish to identify with a specific race.

Halle Berry is fighting with her ex-husband about how to define their children. She has insisted they be defined as African American. Their white father disagrees and wishes to define them as what they are; mixed raced. Whites are not responsible for Halle's POV.

For the record, my mom is Japanese and my dad a 'white guy' of German decent. I do NOT classify myself as belong to ANY race. I don't understand the concept of being 'proud' of one's race. But then since I have no racial identity, I find the entire discussion silly. But to most people it is core to how they look at themselves. Again, whites are not to blame for that.

  5. I watch all three of the movies with the wife. Abbott and Costello is one of the classic comedy teams she likes. She is from Italy and the Marx Bros comedies (especially the Groucho one-liners), are just hard to understand (slang is a very important part of a lot of comedy and doesn't translate well).

I wasn't aware she liked these guys so much. They are a balanced team in her view. A balanced between physical comedy and jokes. She really like the Dracula, Wolfman, Monster one since the original films are very popular in Italy and she liked how the comedy played off of the horror vibe.

Due to financial reasons I had to move back with my mom and she was living with her new boyfriend. He was into Bogie and some other classic movie stars. I didn't have money to go out so I was stuck watching TV with them. After I saw The Big Sleep, The Maltese Falcon and other classic movies I was hooked.

So once I moved out I really got into the Warner's 30 and 40 catalog, and from there to Film Noir and classic comedies. The funny thing was that this guy didn't talk much at all. (we didn't really like each other much), so we never really discussed the movies. Years later he was shocked that I was such a fan (nut case really), about the movies he had grown up with. So at last we had some connection other than my mom.

  7. I see no reason to colorize movies but I'm not against it as long as the original format is available.

I don't think colorizing a movie is going to help broaden it's interest. i.e. someone so shallow (or whatever one wishes to call it), that wouldn't watch a movie because it is black and white, isn't going to all of a sudden enjoy studio era B&W pictures because they are now in color. They would just find other reasons to avoid these great movies; i.e. not enough action, no special effects, no nudity, people dress funny, etc....

Why should TCM do what you suggest for such a low status actor as Reagan? I can agree that TCM could take a break from 31 Days Of Oscar for stars born in the month of February, but to me Reagan isn't a big enough actor to get such an honor. Again, I do NOT have this POV for political reason, but only based on his acting career and the limited number of quality movies he has been in (where his best movies are mostly non staring roles like Dark Victory).

  9. I had a strong feeling you would catch on to that! I was going to reply before I started to watch football today, but I waited thinking 'hey, lets see if finance post something first'.

I didn't have to wait long. But you are correct. Hepburn and Belushi mix like oil and water. Here we have a person with varied taste (which is a good thing).

  10. Well generally threads should be about movies and be related to the movies. Note that the thread on Reagan started out as political. The initial poster assumed TCM had some agenda against Reagan because TCM wasn't featuring Reagan on his birthday (when anyone that has been here, knows that February is Oscar month etc...).

Since the Reagan thread started based on a bogus myth, I really don't see where it had any value (well other than to educate those that are just looking to dish TCM whenever they can).

No one is preventing anyone from starting a thread related to Reagan movies and his acting. But clearly this isn't one (just like the other one). Thus I see folly in this thread as well.

  11. I think you got it!

While the movie was made in the 70s the setting of the movie was in the 'classic' period. I can see why TCM would show movies, even more modern ones, when they are biographies about people from the 20s - 50s.

Of course the movies don't need to be actual biographies; TCM showed My Favorite Year and I'm assuming the reasons were similar to the above. (that movie was about an Errol Flynn type for sure).

  12. When I mentioned The Beatles and 'selling out' I was NOT referring to the use of their music in commercials (I was well aware that MJ is the one responsible for that), but to them wearing those silly suits at the start of their career, visiting the queen, and other activities they didn't wish to do but did just to ensure they were accepted by the mainstream.

John was a rebel early on but he keep a lid on it. Paul would do what it took to 'get along' because he cared about his legacy. It wasn't until John's JC comment that he started to push the envelope. As I'm sure you know, it was Yoko that was disappointed that The Beatles were selling out and not using their music for social change during the 'generation gap' decade of the 60s. John worked hard to try to get McGrovern elected over Nixon but all of that took place after The Beatles. That was my point. John didn't need to compromised since he had all the money he would need.

I'm for sure NOT going to get political heer. I'm not even going to assume TCM showed Bound for Glory to enlighten people about labor issues and how they are connected to current times (E.g. WI, OH). But I do wonder why they showed that specific 60s movie.

  13. I have seen women act that way over a mouse more than once. Really. My sister had mice (she keep them to feed to her snakes!), and trust me when young gals or even older women would come by and one of the mice got away they acted like big foot was about to get them.

  14.

Bound for Glory was an interesting movie and very relevant to events today, but it is a highly political movie. It pits 'the man' against workers and it has a very pro-union POV as well as an anti establishment one.

Based on the movie, if Woody was around today he would be entertaining the Occupy Wall Street groups. I'm not taking sides on this, one way or the other, but just pointing out how Woody was portrayed in the movie. (I admit I don't know much about his actual life).

One thing that did strike me was that he wasn't willing to sell out when young and make lots of money. After that he would of been better able to spread his views (i.e. help the causes he was clearly interested in). I relate this to The Beatles, and especially John Lennon. They sold out to 'the man' big time but after making millions John was able to release music, like Imagine, that was more true to his views.

  15. I also enjoy detail discussion about a movie more than these general ones but I feel specific movie discussions (threads) are best done under the genre forums. i.e. this is 'general discussions' and that is generally what we get here (ok, slap me around for that last line!).

For example, under Westerns there was a great discussion about The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I have always enjoyed this 'thinking man's' western but man, there were a lot of people that understood the movie at a depth I wasn't close to. It was very interesting to read their views.

As for ignoring you? It isn't a good idea to ignore Miss Wonderly. Look what happend to Miles Archer!

  16.

I believe I have read that critics felt that each Thin Man was a little weaker than the previous but I find 'Goes Home' the weakest in the series and Song as one of the top 3.

Of course I'm a major jazz fan so I enjoy that setting but I also like the fact that Gloria Grahame is in the movie. Having this noir icon helped return some of the grit to the film.

It is funny that in 'Goes Home' they don't have the kid since that was a perfect setting for him. Have the kid in one very short scene and then give him to grandma. This plot device would then get rid of two not so hip characters all at once!

As for the pair being magic; well no one else tops them in my book. I have other favorites (Flynn DeHavilland, Tracy Hepburn, Bogie Bacall), but Powell Loy lead the pack.

  17. Nice poster, but that line from Jeb doesn't make much sense. He says 'the two things' and based on what Kit said, I assume those two things are pride and guns.

Then Jeb goes on to say one cannot pry them apart, not even with guns??? Yea, it would be hard to pry apart two things, with guns when one of the things is a gun!

While I would agree Temple is the most famous child star I believe O'Brien was a lot better actor and accomplished a lot more in her child acting career than Temple did. i.e. there is a lot more variety in the roles O'Brien played than Temple. When I see O'Brien on screen she generates such an emotional pull it gets me every time. Just something about her (the voice, the manner, she has IT).

It would be great to see Robert interview either of these great child stars.
