Well if Paula is really 6, 5 since I'm of average height for a male (around 5 - 9) I would be about at the height of those rain soaked blouses that got this discussion going.
As for Loren; Hey, my wife is Italian and I can tell you they do not take kindly to body hair jokes. Not at all. I have the laser removable bills as proof!

My top 10 favorite actors would be:
Leslie Howard, Bogie, Grant, William Powell, Mitchum, Cagney, Cooper, Flynn, Ladd, and Gable.
-
I also like post 1968 movies but a lot less of them then studio era movies. But that being said I still wouldn't wish for TCM to devote, say, more than 15% of their programming to post 68 movies. Instead I would rather another station be set up that would be post 68 classics.
This way when I go to either station I generally know what to expect.

If you really only watch TCM than you would save $20 in my 'what if', but as someone else pointed out while most people claim to only watch TCM, that really isn't the case. i.e. there is a big difference with watching a station most of the time and having that be the ONLY station one has.
For example, people might have grandkids. While they might visit only once a month or so, they might wish to watch something else etc... Of course one can get them DVDs or tell them to use the Internet.
By hey, maybe having only TCM is a great idea. When the grandkids come by and want to watch TV they will be forced to watch TCM! This is help make them more cultured.

Not sure I'm following you here. All I see is an opinion poll but at the end you say your opinion is subject to change (like most of us). So would you really want TCM to determine what movies are shown based on a public opinion poll, when people's opinions are subject to change? But maybe I misunderstood what you were getting at.
I could see TCM having a poll asking a series of question like:
Rank the following decades from the 1920s - 2010
Rank the following genres
I don't see how one would rank what specific movies one should show within the above categories but of course other categories could be added like actors and directors, but the more categories the more complex interpreting the results would be.
But who would TCM poll? If it was the general public, it is highly likly TCM wouldn't show any movies made before 1990 or so. i.e. the general public might not be interested in classic movies.
If the poll was conducted at this website my guess is that movies from the 30s - 50s would top the list.
I sure don't want TCM to follow the taste of the general public. So I'm generally fine with the choices the existing "leaders" at TCM make. As I have said before many times, years from now I could see multiple stations doing what TCM is doing; e.g. classic movies of the studio era, classic movies of the 70 - 90s, etc.....

Well you and I would be willing to pay that extra fee BUT only if it was 'reasonable', right. Isn't that the rub here? There are many treads floating around here all related to this topic.
For example, people want cable companies to move to a per station type of pricing model instead of a bundled tier type of model we have today. They push for this without knowing what the cost would be. Say one pays $60 for cable and gets those 80+ stations. Now they only want TCM and find out that TCM alone would be $40. (Hey, I'm making up the prices but I assume there would be some base minimum charge even if one just got one station). Will people be happy then? I wonder.
-
Be careful what you ask for. While you would be able to pay for what you want, you may also pay a lot more for what you want and thus what you want may be too expensive.
But streaming services will happen soon. The only question is will it be a better model for the consumer in terms of cost.

While Joan has been knocked here for playing the same type of role in multiple movies, to me, she is a perfect fit in Rebecca. Her shyness and overall manner work very well in this movie.
When I saw the movie for the first time I did wonder (just like Joan's mature women employer), why a guy like Max would fall for a gal like Joan, especially when his first wife was a gal like Rebecca. But this is all explained near the end of the movie. Max wanted an everyday type of gal. Someone as unlike Rebecca as he could get. Joan plays that type of women (and not much else) very well.

I know where you are coming from and while I feel the same way I'm not so sure I would take the 'it's over' stance.
Why? Well because I would have to compare the alterative. Say TCM showed standard product commercials during shows, but a typical 90 minute or so movie was only interrupted, say 4 times, and the timing of the breaks was done based on the natural breaks in the movie (unlike AMC where they are based on a fixed time schedule and thus interpret key scenes and thus the flow of the action).
Yea, I would still dislike this but again, I would have to weigh the cost of the alterative. One idea I had would be to start a classic moving DVD sharing club in my area. I'm not a collector of DVDs (I did this with Beta tape and have over 200 classic movies on Beta,, and a new machine I got from my relatives in Japan, but I don't watch them much since I have TCM).
So a classic movie club, even if it only had 20 members, using a website like Facebook, would help keep cost down.
Anyhow, as someone already pointed out this is just all blue sky talk. I'm keeping the faith that TCM will remain fairly unchanged in the future.

I would love to see Juke Girl since I'm a fan of Ann Sheridan. I liked Santa Fe Trail a lot but I'm a big Flynn Dehavilland fan. Reagan was good in this and the feud Flynn and him had over Olivia was charming.
Note I never said you said Reagan was a top 10 actor. I just wanted to know where you would rank him. Since Reagan has been SOTM twice I find it silly for anyone to think TCM has some type of political agenda against Reagan (I'm not implying you believe this put this thread was started on that bogus premises).
-
Here is hoping you find an alterative medic provider, at what you feel is a reasonable price, so you can enjoy TCM again.
-
The one about Comcast is under Hot Topics called Comcast and TCM.
There is also another one called commercials.
Both relate to TCM and how some feel they are greedy (or fear they will be).

I tend to agree with gagman that most guest programmers picks are boring. i.e. they pick very good, if not great movies, but their choices are so vanilla. Yea, The Maltese Falcon or Out of The Past are some of my favorite noirs but if I only had 4 movies to pick I wouldn't pick those, but instead something like Pick-Up on South Street.
I can see one or two of their choices being 'vanilla' but often it is all 4.

Do you mind naming a few movies where you believe Reagan gave a really great performance?
I think he was very good in King's Row but that is about it. Where would you rank him as an actor? In the top 10? 25?
I just wonder how you feel his acting compares to say, James Steward, Tracy, Bogie, etc...
I don't believe Reagan is a bad actor but just a forgetable one; i.e. if it wasn't for his political career I don't think he would be talked about much since there were so many actors of his stature from the studio era. Just my opinion.

Note that when I said 'something for nothing' I was referring mainly to the Internet (e.g. content on YouTube), or how so many people steal movies and music by making copies of copywritten material and not the fee for TCM.
Indirectly everyone pays something for TCM and every network a cable provider provides.
It appears most people 'get it' as it relates to TCM (I know you do). Most:
1) Want TCM to remain as commercial free as possible, especially with NO commercials during the showing of a movie.
2) "as possible' means where TCM takes in enough revenue to at least break even (assuming the parent company is willing to subsidize them), or makes a 'reasonable' profit
3) That some portion of this profit is used to retain classic movies TCM doesn't already have the rights too. Profits could also be used to help save classic movies that will be lost unless they are restored

While Una is funny it does border on making her scenes camp. Of course there is a very fine line there anytime humor is injected into a movie that is not a full blown comedy.
Take the many one-liners in Casablanca. e.g. Bogie's about the waters in Casablanca, or Rains getting his winning for gambling after closing down the joint for gambling.
Fine line there but I don't think it was crossed to the point where it impacts the overall quality of the movie.

I guess I don't understand what someone means when they say "There is no excuse,,,," associated with the practices of a private business. The so called excuse is because the business makes more money.
You think there is a certain amount of greed? Well of course there is. Sorry but in the economic system we have making a profit is king.
I hate the commercials as much as anyone else. Our only option is to find alterative companies to do business with, unless one wants the goverment to get involved (which I don't think anyone is recommending).

I have seen State of The Union before and Lansbury does nail the role of the hard as nails women. I also find it ironic that Tracy plays a guy that is cheating on his wife with the wife being played by Hepburn. So it wasn't just about the state of the union but the state of Tracy's life.

As for Along Came Jones. I love this movie but your are right that Dan Duryea's performance helps the movie from becoming a total farce. The banter between Young and Cooper is nice (cute), but without bad guy Dan the movie would be too much syrup.

I see a major difference between if I would like to see commercials between shows and if I would STOP the service and find an alterative (e.g. purchase DMDs, lobby for a pay-per-view classic movie station).
Of course no one would like to see commercials. But if TCM did so, I still feel the amount I pay for my cable service (which I use mostly just to watch my Lakers, TCM and the Food Network), is still a bargain giving the alterative.
The Lakers have discussed starting a pay-per-view channel (like the Yankees have I believe). I would rather get the games for 'free' (as part of my monthly bill) with the commercials, instead of paying a separate fee.
Years ago I proposed a new business model. One would be charged a very high monthly fee for stations. The system would track how often commercials were viewed per month. The more they were watched the more of a discount one would get towards that fee. Yea, there are logical problems with this but the paradigm makes sense.
-
In order for a business to make a profit they have to offer a service that the public wants. While I might believe most commercial TV shows are 'bad' (and I do) if a station makes a profit than that means the public likes their content. e.g. the Jersey Shores gets very good ratings.
I don't like commercials and therefore I do my best to avoid commercial TV. Most of the time this means that I have to pay directly for non commercial media, which is often more expense than viewing commercial TV.
I stick by my point: Those that wish to view content without paying for it directly (e.g. pay per view, HBO, buying DVDs) but also don't wish to view commercials just wish to get something for nothing. Those like me that reject commercial TV have many other options. Instead of ranting I recommend people peruse those options.
If TCM has to show some commercials between the great movies they show in order to break even or do other things necessary to create revenue (i.e. charge a monthly fee like HBO), I would understand it and if 'reasonable' I would pay up. If it becomes AMC, I would no longer watch it.

I don't know why my reply was to you since it wasn't related to anything you had mentioned. No way I want to mess with a lover of jazz!

I don't know if Roy had the greatest range but he must be right at top. That is what makes it so hard to sing his part. I might be able to carry the lower mid part but clearly not the high parts. So even if there was someone that could do those high parts, most everyday singers would have a problem with the lower parts. Thus it takes two people just to do the Roy parts. I have enough problems focusing on playing the music and remembering the words!

People just expect something for nothing. Now I call that greed.

Rebecca (1940)

Leigh would of been good if there was a flashback scene of Rebecca but as noted not in the part Joan did such a good job in.
Have you seen Born To Be Bad? This is Joan again playing a similar type of character but in reality she isn't that way at all (thus the title). Good movie with Robert Ryan as the one that has to deal with her.
