Yes, I also would love to see some of those Sennett shorts with Carole. I have read about them in the book The Films of Carole Lombard but I have never seen any.

I was one of those adolescent males that had a thing for Prentiss. Yea, she might of not stacked up to someone like Loren but gals like Prentiss have that everyday girl type of vibe. A gal a young guy might have a chance with.
Gals like Loren are gals only for our dreams and we would have to travel thousand of miles to get to her and it wouldn't lead anywhere. This is what makes gals like Prentiss attractive to us. And yes, the pun was intentional.

Well if the movie wasn't about the "romance part" what would it have been about? There wasn't any other major plot elements so to me anyone that would complain about that just really didn't want to see a gay romance.
Isn't the main question how much a gay romance should be different or not to a hetro romance? Take the HBO series 6 Feet Under; Yea, central to the story of a lead character was a gay romance but the series handled this as an everyday type of event. I think the fact one guy was black and the other was white was a neat 'trick' that added even more confusion for audiences.
To me this romance was mostly just about two people trying to make a relationship work that just happen to be gay and of different races. Their relationship was as loving and screwed up as all the other male female relationships the show featured. I found that great.

Well Andy at least you give some hints about what the criteria should be or not be for someone to be SOTM.
One criteria you mention is how often the film an actor is in are shown on TCM. Well the main movies Lansbury is known for and the 3 examples someone else gave, are all shown very, very often. One main reason is because, as I noted, Lansbury isn't the star of those movies. This is why I mentioned an actors placement in the billing credits.
Studio contract players don't get star billing but often they are in more movies than the star and thus TCM might show them a lot when TCM features major stars or other themes. For example, Frank Mchugh. If TCM features any major Warner star from the 30s (e.g. Cagney) as STOM Frank would be in a lot of those movies!
Now someone else mentions number of movies by a star. Of course that is a criteria to some degree (simple logic dictates that). While I would like to see Leslie Howard as SOTM (he is my favorite actor), I do agree that he is in a limited number of movies (relative to other lead male actors), so if TCM was to tell me that was the reason, while I wouldn't like it (I want my guy to get his due!
), I would understand it.What I find funny is how much traction this topic gets. Picking SOTM is a no win situation for the TCM programmers. But I wish I had their job!

Here are some facts related to the 3 movie roles you have listed"
The Harvey Girls - Lansbury has 3rd billing with another actress getting higher billing
Count Jester - Lansbury has 4th billing with another actress getting higher billing
The Machurian Candidate - Lansbury has 4th billing with another actress getting higher billing
Of course some might say 'so what' but there it all comes back to if someone deserves to be SOTM, especially when they have already been SOTM (Oct 1994) and stars like Leslie Howard and Joel McCrea etc.... have never been SOTM.
With Howard and McCrea if one was to provide examples of movies they were great in, they would have first billing if not billing before the title.
I'm a fan of Lansbury and while I feel Boresroor is being too harsh I also question why Lansbury was made SOTM yet again, given all the stars that have never been SOTM.
One major reason might be that she is still alive. I notice that of the stars that have been STOM more than once many were still alive at the time; Mickey Rooney, Olivia DeHaviland, Kirk Douglas and Lansbury.
Of course there are stars no longer with us like Grant (2) Wayne (2) and Garbo (3) etc...that have been STOM more than once but I would hope we could agree they are bigger stars than any of the living ones I mentioned.

The general concept being a 'clash of the cads' month is a good one. People tend to forget there are only about 10 SOTM per year. 20. That isn't a lot. That changes the 'is X worth it' question. It is similar to dealing with the national or a state's budget. If one looks at X in a vacuum it looks worth it, but when one has to decide what is in and just as important what is NOT in, well that is a very different view of 'worth it'.
I enjoy Lansbury as well as Williams but I'm still not sure they should get one of the 10 slots in a year when I see all the others that have never been SOTM, like Leslie Howard or Joel McCrea (just two that come to mind as being a higher priority in my opinion).

So people who watch copywritten material on YouTube for nothing are getting a service for nothing just like someone not tipping.
There there is the use of this website for nothing with people not wishing to watch the ads which would help pay for the service. Thus they are also getting something for nothing.
How do you define this behavior? Frugal? Greed? Something else?
Here is a funny story related to this; My mom owned a small sub-Sandwich shop. She would have coupons for 'buy one, get one free'. She would get upset at those that would only buy one Sandwich and thus get one free, and not anything else especially drinks (since drinks are 99% profit). She called these customers greedy and complained 'how do they expect me to stay in business losing money'! Just like you implied I would tell her 'hey mom, that is the deal you are giving,,, they are not being greedy, just being frugal'.
You see it is all in ones perspective!
(oh, and if a customer brought in their own drink,,,,, man, they better duck!). My mom could be like the soup nazi!. Her shop didn't last long. -
I agree with your take here. As for Marked Women. This is a very good Bette Davis picture. This was the first film she made after returning from England after losing her court case with Jack Warner and Jack made she he put her in a good picture. Bette is great. Bogie does a good job but he is clearly a secondary player since this was made before he became a major star.
As for The Petrified Forest, I would say Bogie has a fairly good role in that (3rd most screen time), but you are correct that most of Bette's interaction is with Leslie Howard.

You know I wanted to like The Doughgirls and some of it was funny. Eve Arden was out of this world but otherwise it fell flat. Also, I just don't like all that pinned up hair. Yea the gals, especially Ann and Alexis are great looking but they look at lot better with their hair down. If they had a Veronica Lake hairstyle the film would of been good with the sound turned off.

My wife parents are Italian and still live there. She was born in the USA but raised in Italy. (she is in Italy for the holidays with her parents and coming home Monday), and she also has a great sense of humor. But 90% or more of the Italians I have meet do NOT. i.e. they get very upset about Italian stereotypes or even the slightest cultural joke. I'm not saying Italians are different. I have found that the more someone embraces their culture the less sense of humor they have related to that culture. Of course maybe it is just the people I have encountered. Me, I'm a 'half-breed'. Since I have no 'home' there are no jokes that impact me.

I just got toothpaste at the store using a coupon. The standard price is $3.99. The store had a special weekly sale and it was $1.00. The coupon I had was for 75 cents and this store doubles coupons. Thus I paid ZERO for the toothpaste. I typically save at least 50% off the retail price by buying products only on sale and using coupons.
As you can see I have an excessive desire to keep my money. To me my behavior is a form of greed. If everyone shopped like me the store would go out of business.
How about NOT tipping? That also is being frugal but to the waitress it is greed. My point again is that when one is excessively frugal it is a form of greed. Note that I don't equate it to the type of greed practiced by Wall Street and the financial industry.
PS; The definition of 'greed' to me is more general than what you provided; just one trying to maximum their own interest. I'm not saying mine is correct or anything. To me it all comes down to what is excessive.

Why are Americans shocked when other nations wish to be the #1 super power? Like America doesn't wish to be the #1 super power? Why is it evil for others but A-OK for the USA?
Being number one means having to provide security and support to nations across the world. The same people that insist we have to be #1 are those concerned about the deficit but don't wish to raise taxes.
Does the world really need a #1 super power? Be careful what you wish for.
Also the use of the term 'japs' is very offensive to some.

I believe that typically the SOTM just gets one day a week. e.g. Powell every Thursday last month.
So I see your point. I wonder if there was some type of conflict with another theme in April that might cause TCM to bunch the Day movies at the start of the month.
-
You got me laughing with that "Boogie! Boogie! Boogie" line from Groucho. Yea, that scene is one of the best. All you had to do was mention 'boogie' to trigger my memory of that scene.

Is Day the April Star of the Month? She was born on April 3rd so April would be a great month to feature her. As most know she released a new album and thus is getting a lot more press (e.g. the L.A. Times has had two articles about her, one with an interview, the last week or so).
Anyhow, it looks like Day is getting her days!

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde may be at the top as far a remake of a specific plot line.
Friday's L.A. Times had a article on Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. The main point of the story was that Watson being daft as played by Nigel Bruce compared to the Jude Law portrayal and that Law was a lot closer to how Doyle portrayed Watson.
What I didn't know was that "there have been over 200 movies featuring the character Holmes and more than 75 actors and by most citations he is the most persistent fictional character in film history, ahead of Dracula, Tarzan and old Ebenezer Scrooge".

Maybe I'm responsible for diverting the topic of this thread so I'll try to get it focused back on what it was; TCM showing ads on it's website.
I assume us lovers of TCM want to ensure TCM makes enough revenue to survive. I'v always wondered how TCM does survive. What does it books really look like? Does it generate enough revenue from the cable companies and other broadcast avenues (e.g. Direct TV), to cover its cost? Do they pay their employees a fair market rate and provide health insurance? Just take heath insurance as one example; Would us lovers of TCM be willing to pay more for the service IF that allowed TCM to provide health insurance?
I enjoy the TCM website and this 'chat' service, but I pay nothing for it. That clearly is in my self interest but what about the workers that have to maintain the website? Am I being fair for getting something for nothing?
I'm starting to use YouTube a lot more and I'm impressed at all the great content I can watch for free. But I fail to see how one can expect artists to create content and not expect something in return. I also see the flaw in the old business model where the artist would get pennies why the 'suits' would get the majority of the wealth. I don't know what the future business model will look like but I'm fairly sure it will not be based on expecting free content just because access to content is easy due to technology.

Well 'You Were Never Lovelier' is a perfect title for the movie.
I have never seen Rita look lovelier. Thanks for providing a large version of this very nice photo.

The way I read this the 'who' in the paragarph is Robert Wagner and NOT Debbie Reynolds.
i.e. it is Wagner that is being questioned.

I had to google the definition of floozie and it is different than Gigolo. A gigolo takes money from women and lives off of women. While a floozie might to that (take money from men) a women can be a floozie just by having so called immoral behavior (e.g. sleeping around). Because laugange is often sexist there really isn't a term simliar like floozie for a man, that I can think of. That was why I made my initial joke.

Thanks for the correction. I assumed BH didn't have it's own police department because of it's size (square miles as well as population), and not because of it's wealth. But didn't Paris spend time in the LA County jail which is run by the LASD? Why didn't she stay at the BH jail? I assume the BH jail is made up of rooms in the Beverly Hilton hotel! (hey, I do know that a lot of cities might have their own police force but use the county jail system).

Thanks for the explanation. I have found a lot of people don't have an understanding of intellectual property rights. Your point about the movies is right-on. How often have we heard people say TCM should do whatever it takes to obtain the rights to show movies they want, but if TCM does something to try to increase revenues (e.g. ads), they cry foul.
It's just commerce, no more and no less.

I didn't write my original post very well. I wasn't judging the movie as much as the people's reaction to the movie when it was released. I was just somewhat shocked that many people were surprised about the events in the movie. i.e. that they were not aware of these type of events and the struggles that you mention. It would be like watching Mississippi Burning and wondering 'did whites really treat blacks like that'.
I just wish a movie like Brokeback Mountain would of been released in the late 60s. The fact that it had to wait 40 years and then was considered to be bold is just hard for me to accept. But this is a reflection of America and not the movie. Just got done reading about the up coming NH primary. We have someone running for the President that still appears to not 'get it'.

I would think that TCM would show a movie more often if their licence was about to expire. e.g. if they had a 5 year licence I would think that the movie would be shown most often in the first and last year (year 5 in this case).
Your last point makes a lot of sense. Wait a good amount of time (say at least 18 months to 2 years) before renewing a licence. This does two things; Saves TCM some money, and creates a freshness once TCM does show the movie again.
