Interesting topic. I have always viewed that the fact that the child is black as a distraction. The movie is about corruption and while race is involved (it always is to some degree but especially in that era), the core of the 'troubles' in this movie were not race related (i.e. the corrupt directed violence at people in the town regardless of race). If the paid off authorizes had ignore the killing of a white child, wouldn't that have had a bigger impact to the 'blind' (those not willing to take a stand either way), given the times and the storyline?

I also admit to knowing little about cinematography but found this documentary fascinating. At first I wasn't going to watch and the first time it was on only watched part of it. But after I found out all the movies Cardiff was involved in (most being movies I had seen and enjoyed), I watched the complete second showing.

The Sheriff department handles all areas including cities that don't have their own police force. So I know they handle small cities like Beverly Hills (e.g. when Hilton got busted they handled it), but I'm not sure if it is all the other cities in LA County.

That scene from The Awful Truth is one of the best, for sure.
My favorite scene would be the bird calling scene in Its Love I'm After. Eric Bore is just great in that as are Leslie Howard and Olivia DeHavilland.

Well then we would have to name 90% of the actresses in pre-code movies.

I always assume the masklike expression was to illustrate that he didn't have a soul; i.e. that his soul was now in the painting, more so than the fact that he doesn't age.

Thanks for the link.
The LASD has been so incompetent in so many areas I wouldn't believe anything they say.

Wow, I said I agreed with you that consumers that feel saving a buck by buying goods from China (represented by WallMart) is best for America in the long term are wrong. I re-read my reply and I really don't see where it implies I didn't agree with that. Sorry that you felt it was baiting you because that wasn't the intent.

I agree with you but Shane is somewhat unique in that there isn't any law in the film at all. In a lot of westerns with a similar theme there is at least some law. E.g. Liberty Valance.
Now this law might be corrupt and or incompetent and thus useless to the good people of the area but it is still there. In Shane there is no law at all that I can remember.

I agree with you that the 70s look of the movies makes it look very, very dated. Even more so than movies from the 30s - 50s. Yea, that doesn't appear to make any sense but that is the vibe I get. I guess it has to do with the fact I lived during the 70s. The cloth and hairstyles. Bad! Also the color of the film looks somewhat washed up.

Hey, sorry for the misinterpretation. So shopping at Walmart is moronic? Now that sounds like communism.

But hey, I agree with you and I make the same point as often as I can. The Times had a few editorials about Walmart related to latinos. One said that Walmart doesn't pay fair wages to their employees and that a very high percent of these employees are latinos. Then another one pointed out that Walmart is the store of choice for latinos since latinos are often at the low end of the income scale and need Walmart's discount prices. Then they had one that said that the combined wealth of the 6 Walton family owners of Walmart is equal to combined wealth of the entire lower 28% if the USA (I might have the percent wrong).
But I see the catch 22 low income people are in. My guess is that few Walmart shoppers would be willing to pay more for products even if the money was used to increase the pay and benefits of Walmart workers (many that would be their own family members or even themselves).

Like a lot of things in life there are various degrees. Your example of the CEO is gross excessive greed.
A lot of people assume a word like greed is a negative word because they put a political spin on it. It isn't in my book (i.e. greed can be good as Greko said but it can also be very, very bad). All it means to me is trying to get more than the other (next) guys. Thus consumers that use coupons or only buy big ticket items when they are on sale are practicing a form of greed. They are also being very smart. I don't see why you wish to believe they are stupid. Only fools pay retail price for anything except for everyday staples.
I practice consumer greed all the time. For example, I get the L.A. Times. They have a new subscriber discount. I don't agree a new subscriber should pay less than a 20 year customer like me. So I call and the Times and they gives me the discount. But I have to call every 6 months to ensure I get the discounted rate. That is a form of greed on my part.
How about the practice of using pirated DVD movies or music CDs? Are consumers who do that (the majority of those under 40 I assume), evil because they are practicing greed? OR is there some legit excuse because media corporations are evil???? My point; Two sides to this story.

I act just like Cary Grant does in the movie Notorious. Are you sure that is what you are looking for? How about Suspicion?

Not sure what you feel sounds like communism. What I'm talking about is capitalism; A system where everyone (buyers, sellers) tries to maximum their own return on investment. The best system in my view but still one driven by people trying to maximizing their own return.
So relate this back to the topic: A website has ads to generate revenue. User want no ads. Ok, I can understand that but the company maintaining the website has to have some form of revenue. I believe there are many that really don't understand this. i.e. they want to use the Internet and get free content. This hurts those creating the content (musicians, actors, directors, etc...), and not only media companies.

So what does the Philly sheriff do to create distractions? He doesn't have Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton, or old cold cases like the Natalie Wood case. Here in la la land it is easy for the sheriff to create a distraction.

Well but at least your quote allows one to understand what you disagree with. Hey, I saw Gene in that movie as a Southern belle. I could only handle about 5 minutes. She just didn't pull it off.

Anyone that shops at WallMart is being greedy; i.e. trying to get the best deal for themselves.
I'm not against greed, per se, since it is a common human trait but greed does exist in many forms.
Saying 'give me a break' implies one has little to nothing of substance to say.

As someone that lives in So Cal I agree with you. There have been a few Sheriff scandals in just the last year or so that the L.A. Times have been reporting one; overcrowding, arrest and confinement based on misidentifying the suspect and the beating of detainees (where the Feds used undercover agents to expose the local department).
So the Sheriff needs as many diversions as he can get. The Times have been calling for him to resign for a while now.

I have over 200 classic movies all on Beta tape. Yea, not even VCR but Beta. Beta was the better format technically so I went with Beta. I had very flexible working hours 20 or more years ago so I would tape movies directly from the TV. There are no commercials on my recordings, but there are missed segments since commercial TV edits to fit time slots.
A few years back my friend's dad pass one and he had a new Sony Betamax unit that was still new in the box (his dad would typically buy two of everything), so I can still watch the tapes. I only have 3 or so DVD, I got as gifts. People think that is strange since they know I'm a classic movie nut, but with TCM and my Beta tapes I have what I need 99% of the time. The tapes all have the same quality as they did when I made them (as far as I can see), and none have broken.

Karl Malden is a great example of what you are getting at. Yea, he isn't a star in the mode of Bogie, Steward, etc..., but he was a great actor that was in many great movies, typically as a second leading man. So no question he makes a great SOTM.
I also notice more speciality months. So what you said is likely the case; TCM needed to mix things up as time marches on. Otherwise they end up just repeating the same group of stars.
-
I assume K-Mart was mentioned since they will be closing out many of their stores, along with Sears (who are both owned by the same guy).
So I took the K-Mart comment as implying TCM was having some sort of meltdown.
But a big-sale makes more sense since TCM isn't having any meltdown in my view.

Footlight Parade is one of my favorites. Cagney and Blondell are great in it as well as the musical numbers done by Busby. This is the movie that got me interested in pre-code movies. I didn't know about them but after I saw this film I was surprised by its open sexually and did some research.

Well a song like I Will by The Beatles might be a hopeful love song.
i.e. a love song about the prospect of love verses a love song about already being in love or about the person they love.
-
What makes you think TCM is rethinking the criteria for SOTM? Do you know who the other stars are for the year? I would have to look at this list to see if TCM appears to be changing direction.
As other have explained Lansbury is one of the view renaming actors of the studio era and she has a relationship with TCM. That might have more to do with her being SOTM than TCM changing direction.
I would be A-OK with showcasing supporting actors but that would be a change in direction.

I was never very impressed with the movie Brokeback Mountain. To me the story was dated when it was released. The people I would meet that felt it was ahead of its time or it was enlightened where way behind the times in my view. i.e. they had a view of gays from the 50s instead of a contemporary view. So if the movie was released in the 60s I would of been impressed.
But hey, I live in Laguna here in So Cal. Maybe if I grew up in an area where people are openly anti-gay I would feel differently.
I have always wondered what the actual gay community felt about the movie.
