I enjoyed *Pandora and the Flying Dutchman* and didn't find it too slow moving. Yea a lot of narration and some don't like that but here it fit and both narrators had great voices. As for Ava I typically find her more attractive in black and white, but in this movie she was a 10+. I cannot think of any other actress that ever looked better (but of course I'm still under her spell!). So last night was a very good viewing night since I saw 2 movies I have never seen before and I enjoyed both of them.

Hold Back the Dawn is worth seeing. It is directed by Mitchell Leisen, and the screenplay written by the solid team of Brackett and Wilder.
The 3 stars are very good; Boyer, Olivia and Paulette Goddard playing the bad gal to Olivia's sweet one. So check it out next time it is on TCM. It is well worth the ride.

Well the B-52s are somewhat like Yoko in that their live shows have an aspect of performance art instead of just music but other than that I don't see much of a connection. Kate of the B-52s is a very strong vocalist. Yoko, not so much!

Yes, that is the perfect reply to all of those, *unlike myself,* that don't enjoy Kate and the many good movies she was in.
-
That is interesting since Joan's book is called No Bed of Roses.

I assume you are joking when you say "Since R.E.M. were more commercially
successful than the B-52s, it's obvious which band is better".
Didn't Fiance make a similar point with another band? So the comment is just using the same insane POV back at him, right? Otherwise everyone here will have to agree The Beatles are the best band.

I for one like the B-52s more than R.E.M. but I wouldn't say the B-52s they are the better band. I love the B-52s because they cannot be taken seriously. Their music and songs are fun but the quality of their musicians don't come close to R.E.M.

I got a very small live tree as our first Christmas tree as a married couple. Everyone made fun of it and called it at Charlie Brown tree. I planted it in our side yard after the holidays. Well 13 years latter it is over 15 feet tall. The nice thing about the tree now is that it remines us of our first Christmas together as a married couple.

I agree that the fact McCrea did many westerns isn't the reason he isn't SOTM, but I have to admit I cannot think of a legit reason why TCM hasn't made him SOTM. But hey Leslie Howard hasn't been SOTM either and he has a few oscar nominations and was in some major productions.
I guess there are just not enough months in the year for all the stars. McCrea would have a great mix of movies over 3 decades; comedies (with some great female comedians), westerns, his Hitchcock film etc... We just need to keep pushing for this.

Well I have meet a few full of life priests but most of the time it was because they sampled too much wine. But my reference was to Pat's role in Angel's With Dirty Faces. That role made such an impact with me I kind of typecast Pat as that type. Now I have seen him in a few comedies where he is very full of life; fast talking, wise cracks etc.. Just this week I saw him in the movie Slightly Honorable. This was the type of role I would expect Warner to cast Cagney in but Pat pulled it off and he got the girl. The movie had murder after murder but all for laughs. Eve Arden was funny usual in a small role.

Your right that I forget some of the younger actors she did movies with latter in her career. She indeed might have something to say about Hamilton since I assume he had a lot of fun on location in Italy. That light in the piazza was responsible for him having such a great tan!
-
Torrid Zone is my favorite Ann movie. Cagney and her really have something going in this movie and Ann even steals the limelight from him. Pat O'Brien is also full of life (no priest in this one!). There are so many great one liners in that film. It is somewhat of a camp adventure film. Yea, there is killing in the movie but still even these killings don't come off as serious (hey just a revolution between friends!). I always promote Torrid Zone since it isn't a very well known movie. Dodge City might have some great Ann photos. She didn't have a big part but she played a saloon gal and thus dressed for the part.
-
I also wondered about when she would release them. Maybe she wants to publish them only after she dies. She cannot be protecting anyone still alive since, other than Joan, she has outlived all those who played a part in her life.

Well in the case of Randall, it was my understanding she did the chasing and since he was so old he couldn't outrun her.

Yea, I remember seeing him on a late night TV talk show discussing this late fatherhood. Kind of sweet but a little creepy at the same time.

You are correct that someone cannot be the most over-rated and highly-rated by the *same* group of people. I assumed that the initial post was saying that Kate was the most highly-rated by the industry (peers, AFI, academy), and considered over-rated by fans. Thus this is two different groups.
I don't see how anyone could not enjoy the movie Holiday and her performance in that as well as other movies that fit her unique style like Stage Door, The Philadelphia Story, The African Queen, and Suddenly Last Summer and many of her movies with Tracy.
I really don't think these movies would of been as good with someone other than Kate.
-
Since I only know Ann and Alexis from black and white movies I wouldn't classify them as redheads but hey there is only one way to really know, isn't there.
Either way, they were both very fine looking gals.

I got a bottle of fine wine about 12 years ago that I planned to open when Olivia pass on. It might be vinegar now, but I'm glad for that. Yea, since each wants to out do the other, my guess is that they will both pass away with hours like Jefferson and Adams.

That is a very good question since I see no so called evidence with regards to Clooney. I find it very, very hard to believe that George would hang out will all those really beautifully women just to keep up a front especially in this day and age.

I have an opinion about what I believe to be a consensus based on the post I have read over the years. This consensus wasn't based on the so called 1,000 of board members, but only those that post at this site. I see nothing wrong with that. If you have an opinion related to the topic express it.

Yes, Meadows is very good and almost makes the film a winner. Only 3 films? Hey, I'll take your word for it, so that type of bogus role (for a women near 40), really had a negative impact on me. I admit I really wasn't interested in Day at all because of those and her 60 comedies with Rock and others. They weren't bad movies but just not my cup of tea.
But then I head some great light jazz music with a great singer. I found out it was Day. So I opened myself up to her and discovered her more edgy movies (like Man With A Horn) and now I dig her. I just stay away from the 60s stuff.

When people here, including myself, used the term 'over-rated' they didn't mean by critics or the industry, they meant by everyday classic movie fans like themselves. To me this is very clear in the many negative post at this thread as well as other threads over the years. As a Kate fan I have to accept the fact that many classic movie fans just don't like Kate.
As for who classic movie fans here at CFU feel is the most over-rated (I like the term most polarizing), I still believe it is Kate. She is the most highly rated (by fans like us) actress that gets the most negative comments. All the proof I need is this thread and all the 'hits' it has gotten.
Yea, someone like June Allyson might get a lot the of negative comments but I don't think many would say she is one of the top 5 or so greatest actresses of studio system era.

Well of course it is going to get sidetracked. I see a difference between someone that could get married and never wished to (especially for a female during the more conservative times of the 30s, - 50s), than for someone that was unable to get married to a partner of their choice.
Note I didn't point out Margaret and Liz for political reasons but only to provide a reason why they didn't get married, since people might not be aware of their preferences. With some of the male actors like Webb the reason is more transparent (well at least to me).
-
I believed we (Hibi and I) were discussing the early careers of Joan and Olivia and not the later ones (which is why I made the WWII reference). Joan is indeed very good, if not great, in Rebecca, but it is the typical Joan type role (acting) and thus my point about Joan's lack of range when compared to Olivia.
Olivia in The Heiress is indeed one of the greatest acting performances by any actress. I don't think there is any question who had the better post WWII career between the two.
-
Like Hibi, I also don't know the other definition. So I'll have to look it up, but for some reason doing so isn't high on my list of priories.
-
Well Margaret Lindsey and Liz Scott as well as many others here couldn't get married to who they wanted to get married to and still couldn't today in most states.

Underrated?

Well in many cases I think you are right; i.e. the user (poster), is just saying "I really like them, but others don't appreciate them as much as do".
But the terms overrated or underrated can also be used to indicate what critics or groups (e.g., AFI) think or the number of awards or nominations they have have not received.
For example, I think the AFI underrated Olivia De Havilland since she is NOT in their top 25 list of actresses but other actresses with less talent (IMO) are listed.
Many (me for one) think Stanwyck was under appreciated since she never won an oscar etc....
