  1. Yes, that 'dinner' thread was strange but I don't see how 'others did it' is a defense (hey, if it was Cain and Paterno would be using it! :) ).

But when one is posting about something like the issues surounding the Paterno story one has to known beforehand they are going to create a hornets nest and that doesn't fit this forum.

Of course name calling doesn't either.

  2.

As for IF he had lived would he have been a major star; Well I think he had more charm and more of an 'IT' factor than Taylor but he doesn't have the looks of a Taylor or Gable.

Gable had the looks and more of the IT factor than Taylor which is why he was a bigger MGM star than Taylor.

Not that Taylor was bad (I like him in some films), but he doesn't have as much juice as Gable and Williams (as seen in the movie Platinum Blond). Williams is 'out there' but at the same time not over the top. That is a difficult balancing act.

That picture of Young is also nice. Again, I put her mug side by side with Harlow and I just find Young way more attactive. Platinum blond hair must blind men, otherwise how would anyone find Mae West sexy.

  3.

How would a younger audience find out that someone they might be drawn to (e.g. Drew), is a host at TCM?

TCM doesn't have much of an ad budget. I assume they do NOT place ads on MTV or other stations shows associated with a younger audience. The only increase to viewship I could see is for those young people that are already aware and watching TCM but only on an occasional basis. They see a spot ON TCM about Drew and thus make a mental note to turn in later.

Of course it would be great to try to get the 'average age of the population' more into classic movies but that would take a lot of money for ads. Sadly I don't think that would even work. Like getting people into Jazz music it typically takes one on one mentoring.

  4. Yes, Williams stole the picture. I also felt that Young is a lot more attactive than Harlow, especially in this picture. But I must admit I have never felt Harlow's mug was all that hot. So I keep saying to myself; Williams, you have THE gal, why go for the shallow blond.

Too many men get taken by that platinum blond hair. e.g. Did Cain fall into the same trap?

I just think that hair color washes out a women's face.

But back to Williams; Yea, I keep watching this movie (I had seen it when it was show when Harlow was SOTM), and was just blow away about him.

  5. I agree with you except with regards to Streisand. Now granted in the two movies you mention 'they' did the best to make her look good and she looks her best in those two films but I still don't find her attactive. That nose is just too much of a distraction.

I do enjoy some of Shearer's performances but I also understand those that wonder how she got as big as she did in the 30s. I just don't see much of an 'IT' factor like someone like Crawford, Garbo or other early 30s stars had.

  6. Well said. I really like the tough guy no-nonsense dialog in these early Ladd Lake movies. These early noirs as well as others like the Maltese Falcon set the tone for the later 40s and early 50s noirs.

Yea, if one was to just read the dialog it often might look silly (i.e. no one talks like that), but with the right setting and right actors saying the lines it works.

The Big Sleep is another example. Viewers shouldn't let the plot drag them down. i.e. who killed who isn't the point. Just go with the flow and enjoy the ride. And what a ride!

  7. Should we cut TCM some slack for having them be the guest host?

Note that I'm part of the group that cuts ALL the guest hosts 'slack' since to me the guest host function is 'what it is'; a temp host and thus I have less expectations than I would of Bob or Ben.

But as you know many other people do not provide any slack. I.e. as soon as I see someone younger than 50 or so as a host I know that there will be a thread the next day trashing said host. This is clearly a pattern here.

Hey, I don't mind it even if it is someone I like (e.g. I have a thing for Drew Barrymore, so sue me!).

What I feel is a legit topic is what expectation, if any, do viewers have with regards to TCM and who they select as host. Again, for the record I would rather have someone associated with movies from the golden era (e.g. director, actor, screenplay writer), since they were THERE, even if they may have some flaws because of aging (and anyone from that era is going to be at least 70).

  8.

There have been many threads about the guest host with some being very negative about certain host.

Are people here saying that if the guest host is a classic movie star any negative comments are off limits but if they are a more current actress actor, 'trashing' is A-OK?

For the record I felt Eva did a good job. I do admit I like a more classic star (someone older), since they tend to comment on things they actually experienced during the era (e.g. Eva's comment on the Lake Hair style).

Of course someone like Drew Barrymore or Irene Douglas can comment on what a relative from the classic era told them but that isn't the same as first hand info.

But just because someone is a classic star it doesn't mean that they will do a good job as host.

  9. True Grit is a good example. I was talking to a few non classic movie fans and they were going to see the remake. I asked them if they had seen the Wayne version and only one of them had. So one of the guys was going to rent the Wayne version and they were all going to watch it after seeing the remake.

If there wasn't a remake these non classic movie fans would of never checked out the Wayne version. Ok, this is just one example, but I have never heard anyone say 'because there is a remake I have NO need to check out the original version'. I just don't see people thinking this way.

  10. Well we can agree to disagree. Unless the rights to the original are held up (i.e. prevent the original from being shown), I see NO harm to the original. Note that this harm you worry about ONLY happens in the minds of those NOT interested in the original to begin with. I.e. No TRUE fan of an original would let a remake harm their enjoyment of the original.

So you basic point is; for those that are generally NOT interested in classic movies to begin with, a remake might to harm to the original. Well I frankly don't care much about the opinions of those that don't understand and enjoy classic movies.

People NOT into classic movies are NOT going to be LESS into them because of remakes. In fact I say the inverse is true. The odds are GREATER that a remake will bring SOME interest to the original by non classic movie fans.

  11. As many people here that 'hate' remakes do you site 2 very poor and silly examples of remakes (the Psycho, shot by shot one being the worst remake ever in my view) for making your case about remakes.

Just like songs are redo by subsequent artist, I see no reason why movies cannot be redone.

While the vast majority of the time I like the original I see no reason for producers to NOT do a remake. If the source material is good and with a new set of actors, writers, etc.. a remake can be a creative event. Of course they can also be trash.

  12. Julie is very nice to look at and a fine actress based on the few films I have seen but as for a career, I don't see how one can say she had a good MOVIE career. I think a lot of that had to do with coming of age in the 50s instead of the 30s or 40s and thus Julie did more work on TV shows instead of first rate movies.

Creature is listed as her most popular movie. To me that says a lot.

  13. Doesn't The African Queen 'work' because of Kate Hepburn? In other words she was perfect for this role. Now as is common with many of the characters Kate played the character isn't a very likeable one. I fail to see how a more likeable actress would of been better in The African Queen. Kate's 'above it all' POV worked well for this role.

As for my favorite Bogie film; It is The Big Sleep also. I have seen it over 30 times and I still get a kick out of each scene. Each scene has some juice and the movie just moves from one great scene to the next.

  14. With regards to Claudette and her looks, my own opinion is that she always looked too much like a mom instead of a girlfriend. Most of the time she had a very frumpy hairdoo and this made her look too formal. So while she always looked the same I would say that at 20 she looked 35 and at 50 she looked 35.

The few times she let her hair down (i.e. where it looked natural), she looked younger and less like someone's mother.

The Palm Beach Story is a great movie and very funny.
