  1. What makes a film?

This is the *must-have* list for me. And when I say must-have, a film must have all of these, or else it means nothing to me and is in my estimation not worth the time:

    a) Magic (something that cannot be replicated in real life or on stage)

    B) Powerful visuals (images, images, images=the poetry of cinema)

    c) A story with purpose (or else why tell it)

    d) A message for the audience (leave us thinking about something)

    e) Entertainment value (amuse us, thrill us, scare us, arouse us)

    f) Give a sense of history (this can be accomplished in many ways and does not have to be a so-called historical text; it can be revisionist)

  2. That's a good reply. You gave more than expected.

Two things you said jump out at me, so I will quickly address them:

I am not against political debates. I think movies are highly political creatures...they were built by people that wanted to preserve or celebrate a certain way of life, or call into question so-called unjust practices and challenge societal attitudes. As you said, we don't all have to agree and can agree to disagree, but we should not shy away from discussing a political film or how any filmmaker's effort resonates with our political and personal convictions.

Next, I don't think a runaway thread has to wind up being deleted by a WebAdmin. If we redirect the discussion and strive to keep it on topic, then it is not a failure. Obviously, some threads are more on target than others. Humor helps as long as it doesn't become a gag at a poster's expense.

  3. I consider it an honor and a privilege to have been entrusted with such responsibility.

I am not too familiar with some of your prior posting...so perhaps you can bring me up to speed on your personality?

Tonight TCM continues its month-long celebration of Akira Kurosawa's great works by airing SEVEN SAMURAI. The film is one of the director's more well-known efforts.

Although it was made in 1954, the movie takes place in the 1500s. It is about a farming village that has lost its crops due to bandits. In order to combat their adversaries, the farmers unite and hire a group of mercenaries to protect the village. These warrior men are referred to as samurai (ronin).

SEVEN SAMURAI was remade in the U.S. in 1960 as THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN. The American version was westernized and starred Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen.

But Kurosawa's original is considered one of the greatest and most influential films ever made. It was voted onto Sight & Sound's list of the ten greatest films of all time in 1982 and 1992.

  5. It will be interesting to see what they schedule...so far, February was my favorite month with those Fox classics like PINKY, THE SNAKE PIT...and the rare showing of KITTY. They can't top that as far as I'm concerned.

  6. Hi Hair,

If you have a wish list about the June schedule, please feel free to post legitimate ideas. That is what this thread should be used for...again, this thread seems a bit ahead of schedule, that is my major criticism with it.

    Thanks.

  7. What does an actor's salary have to do with this thread? I do not get the relevance of your remarks.

If you had said the film could've been better if Dooley Wilson was paid more, then that would fit in with our conversation. It is starting to go a bit off-topic again. Please clarify what you have written and suggest ways in which it may be relevant to the discussion. Thanks.
