Yes, I think I read something about that. -
Female directors through the ages

I was being sarcastic in my previous post. Seriously, though, I think there will be some good side effects of this recent Oscar victory. It means that more women, especially young ones coming out of film schools, will be given opportunities at the major studios. We will see the fruit of this for the next few decades and it will likely bring about a new renaissance in feminist filmmaking. -
But gosh, he's been popular for such a long time. During the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN craze, why didn't anyone make a group for him. Well, at least that is rectified now!

Forgive me if there is another thread for this, but I didn't find any. These are the latest groups to be added on the Classic Film Union. I will keep adding to this thread on days when there are more groups added that might be of interest to posters here. CLAIRE BLOOM JOHN DALL ROGER MOBLEY ALIDA VALLI CHARLES COBURN BIOGRAPHIES FRANCES FARMER BILLIE DOVE BILL MURRAY JOHNNY DEPP (Surprised there wasn't one for him already.)

Does he? I missed that. Thank you, and I will add it to the OP.

As long as it doesn't lead to reverse discrimination. I would hope that a deserving white male director does not get slighted because it may be politically correct to give the next directing Oscar to a Jewish black lesbian democrat who does a remake of GONE WITH THE WIND. -

Female directors through the ages

I think they probably figured she would win. They set these things up, because they know that clip will be shown again many times, for a long time to come. It certainly won't hurt Streisand and will add to her own cinematic immortality as having been part of such an historic moment. This said... The sad reality is that it took so long for this to happen. From Frances Marion directing back in 1921, to Dorothy Arzner in the 30s and 40s, Ida Lupino in the 40s and 50s, on through to the more recent female directors like Streisand, Marshall, Campion, Coppola, etc. It is a blight on the motion picture industry that it had been in the throes of sexism for so long, just like other aspects of our national culture. - Jarrod -
I am wondering how long their licensing agreement lasts with Disney/Buena Vista. We may not see these films again for awhile on TCM. I haven't seen CANDLESHOE lately...or THE SHAGGY DOG.

Muni gives a flawless performance (one of many from him). -
These titles may be of interest if you're a fan of Disney's early live action films, like I am: - THE PARENT TRAP...March 9 - HERBIE RIDES AGAIN...March 16 - THE COMPUTER WORE TENNIS SHOES...April 17 - THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD...May 16 - THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG...May 22 Also (not quite Disney but uses a lot of people from Disney's live action unit): - TOM SAWYER...April 29

Some biopics will air on TCM in celebration of St. Patrick's Day: THE FLYING IRISHMAN (about pilot Douglas 'Wrong Way' Corrigan) WILD IRISH ROSE (about tenor Chauncey Olcott) PARNELL (starring Clark Gable and Myrna Loy)

Cyd Charisse Birthday Tribute! (March 8th)
JarrodMcDonald replied to HollywoodGolightly's topic in General Discussions
Thanks for creating this thread...what a treat for Cyd's legion of fans! I am making a separate thread listing March highlights on the TCM schedule, and this item goes near the top! -
One thing this list helps with is that some of the stars do not have groups in the CFU. It makes it easier to figure out which ones to request.

Thanks! -
On March 8, TCM will air the classic pre-code crime drama I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG. The film stars Paul Muni as a wrongfully convicted man. It is from a script written by Howard J. Green and Brown Holme, based on Robert Elliott Burns's autobiography. The plot: Muni's character works on a southern chain gang but eventually escapes to Chicago. Later, he is offered a pardon if he will turn himself in. When he accepts, he learns it was just a ruse. So, he escapes once again. After seeing the film in 1932, audiences began to question aspects of the U.S.legal system. The picture was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Picture; Best Sound Recording; and a nod for Muni as Best Actor in a Leading Role. I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Robert Aldrich's THE BIG KNIFE
JarrodMcDonald replied to JarrodMcDonald's topic in Films and Filmmakers
Robert Aldrich and Robert Wise are the auteurs with the widest range in terms of genre and willingness to experiment with storytelling archetypes. Phil Karlson also worked in very different genres with very different stars, but he was not as mainstream or as successful as Aldrich and Wise. I think Alfred Hitchcock was the most limited in terms of range. He was the undisputed master of what he did, but he was bound by a certain formula more than most directors. -
