I didn't mention George Peppard either...
-
Oh yeah...Don Ameche. Hmmmm...
-
Good idea. I made a screwball comedy group for the women but not for the men, so that's easy to fix.
In addition to Dana Andrews, Henry Fonda is another one, and he could go in a lot of places, too.
-
Okay, that makes more sense, putting Farrell with the B-movie group. She becomes a character actress later on.
I forgot about poor Audrey Hepburn...I knew this wasn't a perfect list...
Maybe I can put Audrey in Mary Astor's place, and put Mary somewhere else (I am still stumped about her, because her career took so many twists and turns, every five years, she reinvented herself.)
-
Okay...yes, Andrews is someone I failed to include...and Gina is a good suggestion for the Italian ladies.
-
It took a bit longer than I thought it would. The goal is that when friends ask for a movie suggestion, you can say, 'well if you like buxom blondes or you like scream queens in horror films, you might want to check out so-and-so in _________.'
-
Yeah, I think you're right about Lawford.
-
There isn't really a limit...but I was trying to keep it around three or four for each, so it wasn't so overwhelming.
Do you think Menjou would go with the pre-code group? He sort of becomes a character actor after that.
Lemmon seems like more of a leading man than Matthau, so I'm not sure if they go in the same category.
I forgot to include William Powell...
-
Thanks...I think you are correct about that. This is obviously a rough draft. LOL I appreciate the feedback!
-
I don't think Mary Astor is placed correctly on this list.
And I think Eleanor Parker should be here somewhere...
-
And I just realized that I neglected to include GARY COOPER. He could probably go in the Oscar Favorites group.
-
Angela Lansbury and her mother, character actress Moyna Macgill.
-
Okay, (and he's a favorite actor of mine)...where do you suggest adding him? Or is there a new category that can be created for him? He's not exactly a Dangerous Man, since his career is not heavily focused on film noir. Again, what do you suggest?
-
Again, I tried to come up with a list that highlights some of the great classic film performances. Obviously, it is not all-encompassing. I usually picked three people for each category. I did not re-use anyone, so that I could include as many stars as possible. This only covers 1920 to 1970.

Yeah, the PSYCHO remake did not work for me, either. I think the casting of Vince Vaughn was wrong. Julianne Moore in the Vera Miles role was good, however. Anne Heche? Still undecided about that! LOL And ironically, the same script was used with very few changes...it was mostly the same film, shot for shot, just with new actors and enhanced production values. But maybe the biggest problem is that it wasn't Hitchcock, and we knew it. It had lost some of its magic.

Yes, I think DiCaprio will be seen as one of the leading actors of his generation, whether or not you agree with it.
James Cameron's volume of work will probably withstand the test of time...the auteur theory will be applied to him, to Clint Eastwood, to Steven Spielberg, to Gus Van Zandt, to Steven Soderbergh, to Spike Lee, and to a few select others, and they will be regarded as among the filmmaking elite of the late 20th/early 21st century. Their reputations are pretty much sewn up. It's just a matter of how many more classic films they add to their respective canons.

Well, not every film was great...there were clunkers..and some ideas may've been great on paper, but due to casting errors or a change in directors, the material may not have been properly realized. That is the benefit of remakes in my opinion...just like with PINKY, I believe that if it were redone today, given our current state of political correctness, it could be even better than the original. Some films could definitely be improved upon...and then there are some elephants in the room.
When Gus Van Zandt remade PSYCHO, I think people were offended (at least those in the Hitchcock camp)...he was touching the Holy Grail and that's a no-no. LOL
If someone had the ball-s to try and remake CITIZEN KANE, that would face all sorts of scrutiny, even if it were someone like James Cameron doing it. There are certain classic films that have an unspoken wall of protection around them, and to blaspheme them, is strictly verboten. LOL

I have had some time to think about INDISCRETION OF AN AMERICAN WIFE. Maybe there is something truly great about it that I just don't see. I am going to make the effort of watching it again tomorrow night, and I will try to be unbiased. Then, my instincts about it as a so-called classic will either be verified or changed. LOL
-
Obviously, viewers' tastes change from generation to generation. If you asked movie goers back in 1939 what their favorite movie was, well, you know they'd all enthusiastically say GWTW. You would be lucky to find one or two dissenters in the crowd.
But it does give food for thought...maybe films we consider classics of our time will not hold up well in fifty years from now. For instance, maybe future audiences will find 1997's TITANIC laughable.

How could we overlook the Gish sisters and the Wynns. Thanks for adding them. In the original post, the Bros Howard referred to the actors known as the Stooges. But now you have helped clarify that. Thanks!
I would also add:
Michael Landon and his daughters, actresses Leslie Landon and Jennifer Landon
plus
The Cassidys: Jack, David, Shaun
-
Thanks...Loretta Young had three sisters in show biz...Georgiana was Mrs. Ricardo Montalban, and they were married for many years.
-
Maybe a better way to structure this thread would be 'If I could improve one thing about a classic movie, it would be...' Then, thoughts are more focused on the positive, instead of the negative. Or maybe you could write it like 'If I were to remake a certain film, it would be __________, because...'

Sounds like an option. LOL And both films do have Bette Davis in sisterly conflicts/relationships.
