  1. I should have added that winning a Best Supporting Oscar should not be viewed as a step down from Best Actor or Actress (a number of actors have won at least one of each, inlcuding Denzel Washington, Michael Caine, Ingrid Bergman and Helen Hayes).

     

    It can be argued that winning a supporting-actor Oscar is actually more difficult than winning Best Actor/Actress, as the slate of films to appear in any given year each typically has only one lead actor and/or actress, whereas each of these films has a number of featured players who must compete for the supporting nominations (which is where the toughest competition is found, since the final vote is always limited to the five nominees in each category).

     

    When you look at Walter Brennan's three Best Supporting Oscars within a five-year span (and consider how many great character actors there were back then with whom he had to compete), you can begin to appreciate the enormity of his accomplishment.
