Clue #3:-- The hero escapes from the battleship, carrying a rifle, into the hills overlooking the lagoon and shoots at the German sailors as they try to repair the ship, hoping to delay repairs until the British fleet comes... No. Not science fiction. It's a war movie in black and white, and stars a promising movie star who didn't quite make it. He was born in Louisiana and died young at 43...

You got it...George Pal was one of the pioneers of stop motion animation known as Puppetoons and one of the persons from whom Ray Harryhausen learned his craft. "Gumby" is an example...Because of this movie, the studio had him do "The Time Machine"...Peter Sellers and Terry Thomas were great as the villains... Your thread, 6....

Another clue: The director, born in Hungary, is better known for first class science fiction movies and special animation than musicals..

You know, I always thought the perfect role for Chuck Connors would have been Red Ryder. If you look at the old DELL comic books of Red Ryder, the way Fred Harman drew him, he looks a whole lot like Chuck Connors....

Additional clues: In addition to being a combination of live action and animation, the film also features two first rate comedians. However, the comedian singing (voice) is never seen in the movie.. . and this song is one of the highlights....(I can't believe nobody has guessed this yet.)

Thanks... This movie star won the Best Actor Award but later gave the Oscar to a child who admired it, telling him that it was winning the statue that mattered, not owning it. After the actor died, the child returned the statue to the actor's family.... Name the actor and the movie for which he won the award..
