New Orleans.Danny Fisher(Elvis Presley)works in a cheap nightclub,The Blue Shade, owned by mob czar,Maxie Fields(Walter Matthau)Danny comes to clean up and finds Ronnie(Carolyn Jones)Maxies mistress being abused by a drunken hood(Val Avery)Danny breaks it up and leaves with Ronnie.Ronnie and Danny get away in a cab,but when Dannys schoolmate(Fred Winston)sees Danny and Ronnie together he makes a crack and Dannys beats him up getting him expelled.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Dannys father(Dean Jagger)and sister,Mimi(Jan Shepard)are disgusted with him and Dannys walks out joining a gang of punks led by Shark(Vic Morrow)Danny,Shark,and two punks,Sal(Brian Hutton)and Dummy(Jack Grinnage)rob a store.In the store Danny meets Nellie(Dolores Hart)and they fall in love.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    At the Blue Shade,Maxie and Ronnie come in,but Ronnie ignores Danny because of sadistic Maxie.Maxie suspects Danny and Ronnie are having an affair,but she says she only heard Danny sing once.Maxie orders Danny to sing,or else.Danny sings and becomes a hit.Maxies rival,Charlie Legrand(Paul Stewart)comes in and wants him to work at his club,The King Creole.Danny agrees much to the anger of Maxie who,along with Shark have a plan in store for Danny.

     

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Elvis only Film Noir and many feel its his best.Based on the novel Stone For Danny Fisher by Harold Robbins.In the book,Danny was a fighter.

    Bank worker,Jim Osborne(Joseph Cotten)gets the chance of a lifetime,steal a million dollars on a Friday afternoon,take his wife,Laurie(Teresa Wright)and get out of the country before they discover its gone on Monday.

     

     

    Jim and Laurie get as far as New Orleans when she finds out the truth and wants nothing to do with it and leaves.Jim has second thoughts about it all and wants to return the money before Monday and get on with his life.

    Judge Calvin Cook(Fredric March)is tough with little sympathy for anybody.His son in law to be,David Douglas(Edmond OBrien)a lawyer has little respect for his cruel ways.His daughter,Ellie(Geraldine Brooks)feels the same way even though she loves her parents.MRS Cook(Florence Eldridge)has been having dizzy spells and constant headaches unknown to the family.She goes to a specialist,Doctor Walter Morrison(Stanley Ridges)who gives her an examination and finds shes got brain cancer,but he doesnt have the heart to tell her.The doctor tells Calvin who feels the best thing to do is perform an illegal mercy killing.

    Joe Sullivan(Dennis OKeefe)is doing time for a crime he commited with mob czar,Rick Coyle(Raymond Burr)Rick couldnt care less about Joe and has no intention of splitting the loot with him.

     

     

    Joes mistress,Pat(Claire Trevor)has a plan of helping Joe escape and getting out of the country.On the night of the escape Pat goes up to the prison and finds Joe has a visitor,social worker Ann Martin(Marsha Hunt)Ann is impressed with Joe when she finds he had saved the lives of other kids when he was a boy during a fire.Pat takes a dislike to Ann,but still wants to help Joe escape.

     

     

    Joe breaks out with Pat waiting,but the gas tank of the car is hit by the prison guards.The gas runs out not far from Anns apartment and Joe and Pat hide out with her and soon all three get out of town.

     

     

    Rick is enraged when he finds Joe has escaped and sends his top killer,Fantail(John Ireland)out to get rid of him

     

     

    Joe,Pat and Ann have a series of adventures before he at last meets Fantail who Joe thinks is there with his payoff.

Two killers,Max(William Conrad)and Al(Charles MCGraw)show up in Brentwood a small town.They go to a small diner where their victim eats every night.They molest the owner(Harry Hayden)by calling him bright boy and chasing off his customers.When the owner tells them their victim is not coming The Killers go to the gas station where he works and gets his adress,murder him and leave.

     

     

     

    Insurance investigator Riordan(Edmond OBrien)is put on the case and finds the victim was an exfighter called The Swede(Burt Lancaster)The Swedes fellow worker,Nick(Phil Brown) tells Riordan that a few days before the killiing a mysterious stranger(Albert Dekker)had stopped for gas,took an interest in Swede and gleefully drove away.

     

     

     

    After more investigation through an old friend of Swedes,Detective Lubinsky(Sam Levene)Rioddan finds that the Swede had once dated his wife Lily(Virginia Christine)Lily tells Riordan that at a party Swede had met Kitty Collins(Ava Gardner) trashy wife of mob czar,Big Jim Colfx(Dekker)and Swede fell for her and dumped Lily.

     

     

     

    Riordan meets Charleston(Vince Barnett)an excriminal who was involved in a robbery with Colfax,Swede,and two gunmen,Dum Dum(Jack Lambert)and Blinky(Jeff Corey)Charleston backed out at the last minute.

     

     

     

    After the robbery,Swede and Kitty had vanished with all the money doublecrossing the gang.

    Iverstown 1920s.MRS Ivers(Judith Anderson)owns a large factory.Her neice,Martha(Janis Wilson)hates her aunt and wants to leave,She plans to run away with Sam Masterson(Darryl Hickman)a boy who wants to also leave to get away from his drunken father.Marthas tutor,MR ONeil(Roman Bohnen)and his son Walter(Mickey Kuhn)live with the Ivers.Martha is caught and brought back.Sam returns to say goodbye to Marha,but she still insists on going along.When MRS Ivers catches Martha leaving she kills her aunt.Sam gets away in the confusion and when the police come Martha tells them it was a worker at the company who killed her aunt.Walter and his father go along with Martha.

     

     

    1946,Sam(Van Heflin)returns from WW2 and finds Iverstown is run by Martha(Barbra Stanwyk)and shes married to Walter(Kirk Douglas)the local DA.Sams gets into a accident with his car and while killing time in Iverstown meets Toni Marachek(Lizabeth Scott)a girl out of jail on a false charge.The conditions of Tonis prohibation is she must return to her drunken father.Toni wants no part of it and decides to go away with Sam when he leaves Iverstown.The next day Toni is arrested and Sam goes to Walter to get her out.Sam meets Martha and she finds shes still in love with him and she hates Walter who is a worthless drunk.

     

     

    Walter thinks that Sam knows the truth about Marthas aunt and suspects blackmail.

     

     

  7.  

    In a brutal overcrowded prison,Captain Munsey(Hume Cronyn)a oily,sadistic head guard is in charge.His dream is to replace weak warden(Roman Bohnen)The doctor(Art Smith)hates Munsey,but theres little he can do.

     

     

    Joe Collins(Burt Lancaster)is the prisons head convict,planning a mass escape.Joes boys,Soildier(Howard Duff)Tom(Whit Bissell)Kid Coy(Jack Overman)Spencer(John Hoyt)and Freashman(Jeff Corey)go along with Joes plan,but Munsey has informers everywhere.

     

     

    Joes girlfriend Ruth(Ann Blyth)needs an operation,but she wants him with her or she wont have it done.Soildiers wife Gina(Yvonne DeCarlo)is waiting in post war Italy for him,Spencer wants to get out to get back at Flossie(Anita Colby)a spoiled tart who framed him,and Tom wants to get back to his wife,Cora(Ella Raines)

     

     

    Tom hangs himself when Munsey gleefully tells him his wife is leaving him.Munsey puts Joe and the others on a brutal project called The Drainpipe.The prisons newspaper editor(Charles Bickford)joins up in Joes escape plan when Munsey stops his paro;e.

     

     

    Everything is set,but Joe finds theres a Munsey informer among his men.

     

     

  8. my only gripe about this film is the Sinatra Standard,Ill Remember April is played but never sung.Deanna would have done a Great job with this Great tune.Its a shame she never sang it in a movie or recorded it.

  9. Vince Cinelli(Edward G Robinson)a Mafia underboss and killer is sentenced to die.On the outside his boys kidnap the wardens daughter(Sylvia Finley)Word gets to the warden(James Bell)that when Vince goes,his daughter goes.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Another killer,Peter Canning(Peter Graves)is also sentenced to die,but Vince finds he has a huge amount of money stashed.Vince tells Peter he will take him along in the escape if he will split the loot.Peter agrees.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    With the help of Vinces mistess(Jean Parker)all get away.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Vince is angry when he finds Peters loot is stashed in a bank vault and only Peter can get it out.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Great Film.Long overdue on DVD.

  10. 1876.Kern Shafter(Ray Milland)signs up for the army and becomes a sergent.Hes sent out West and trouble starts when he finds Capt Edward Garnett(Hugh Marlowe)an old enrmy in charge.things get worse when they both fall for beautiful Josephine Russell(Helena Carter)Josephine secretly loves Kern.Things get even worse when they are sent to The Little Big Horn.

    George Raft and his sidekick Mack(Mack Grey)return to their hometown on a War Bonds Tour.George remembers his dancing days during Prohibition and returns to the ruins of the club he started out in.He rembers one night at the club.

     

     

    Nick(SZ Sakall)is the owner in love with his master of ceramonies,Lilian(Marjorie Rambeau)but Lilian feels shes not good enough for Nick.George is the clubs star performer in love with his partner,Billie Moore(Janet Blair)but shes dating mob czar,Steve Crandall(Broderick Crawford).Steve had just highjacked a shipment that belonged to rival mobster Scar Edwards(Damian OFlynn)and Scar goes to the club demanding it back.Steve kills Scar and leaves his body in one of the trucks.Honest,but tough police detective,Dan McCord(Pat OBrien)goes to the club wanting to know about the killing,but Crandall laughs in his face.

     

     

    George tells Crandall to leave Billie alone,feeling hes making a tramp out of her.Crandall decides to plant the murder weapon on George to get Dan off his back and have Billie to himself.

     

     

  12. Dan Gannin(George Raft)is the towns number one bookie czar who plans to open his own nightclub,quit,and marry his girl Robbie Lawrence(Marilyn Maxwell)The clubs singer is Dans sister,Elaine(Gale Robbins)

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Dans best friend and partner,Hal Towers(Harry Morgan)is visited by two hoods and demand a part of the organization.When Hal refuses hes brutally murdered.When Dan and LT Barney Runson(William Bendix)find Hal,Dan wants revenge.Barney warns Dan to stay out of it and let the police handle it,but Dan wont listen.

     

     

     

     

     

     

    Soon,two thugs pick up Dan,blindfold him and take him to meet a mysterios MR Dickson(Frank Faylen)Dan refuses to go along with the gangsters and is beaten up and left for dead.Barney gets him out of the hospital and again warns Dan to stay out of it,but he still refuses.

  13. China 1941.Capt Jim Gordon(John Wayne)head of the Flying Tigers needs volunteers who are experienced fighter/pilots.

    Two sign up,**** Bales(Edmond MacDonald)who was once involved in a drunken plane crash and Woody Jason(John Carroll)a cocky know it all whos a first rate pilot.

    Soon **** and Woody go out on a mission and **** is killed while flying with Woody.The others in the squad blame Woody for not coming to Blackies defense.Jim believes Woody when he tells him it wasnt his fault.

    British Red Cross nurse Brooke Elliot(Anna Lee)is Jims girlfriend,but Woody soon tries to take her away from Jim.

    Woody is ordered to fly on a mission one night,but he and Brooke go out on a date.Hap Smith(Paul Kelly)a flyer whos eyes are going bad,flies in Woodys place and is killed.When Woody returns Jim fires him and orders him back to the States.

    Peal Harbor 1941 and America is at last in the War.

    Jim is sent on a dangerous bombing mission deep behind enemy lines.Woody feels sorry for being such a heel and sneaks aboard with Jim.

    John Carroll steals the show as wise cracking Woody.

    Paul Kelly and Tom Neal were on trial for murder in real life.

    Mae Clarke,who plays Blackies wife will best be remembered for the Grapefruit Scene in Public Enemy.

    Shots are fired in a dark room and out walks George MacAllister(John Carroll)George goes to light up a smoke,but BANG,his victim shoots him in the back before he dies.George lights the cigarette as if nothing has happened.Before his death which George knows isnt far off,he tells his story in a flashback.

    George is the half brother of Barry MacAlister(Robert Paige)a millionaire.George hates Barry and wants his money.

    George gets his girlfriend,beautiful Carlotta Duvall(Vera Ralston)to act as Barrys nurse,but problems start when Carlotta falls for Barry.Crooked private detective,Ernie Hicks(Broderick Crawford)finds out and blackmail starts.

    Great Film Noir.Also in castHenry Travers,Constance Dowling,Hattie MCDaniel,etc

    If you liked Double Indemnity(1944)you should enjoy this.

    Not a bad cast Victor McLaglen,Harry Morgan,John Archer,Anthony Quinn,Kent Taylor,Lois Andrews,Grant Withers,etc

    Great prison breakout scene.(Cody Jarrett,eat your heart out),

    London 1944.Carole(Anna Neagle)is a stage actress in love with ex soildier,Charles King(David Farrar)working with her.

    After a V2 rocket hits, Carole is badly injured.Word gets to John Beaumont(Errol Flynn)her father,a big Hollywood actor/producer.

    Charles goes to the nearest pub where he meets Kate(Kathleen Harrison)the owner who once worked for Caroles mom,Lilian Gray(Also Neagle)and she tells him of Lilian and John.

    John was once a singer/actor in love with Lilian and helped her get her start.Soon,they fall in love and get married.WW1,breaks out and John signs up.At the end of the war John finds Lillian is a star,but the public has forgotten him..John decides to go to Hollywood,leaving Lilian and Carole behind.John becomes a first rate American actor.

    John and Lilian still love each other and decide to try again.

    Pretty good musical.American title was Lets Make Up.In England the film did well,in America it was a major disaster.

    Keep an eye out for Stephen Boyd and Sean Connery.

     

     

  17.  

    South Seas 1875.Bucko Larson(Victor McLaglen)head of a gang of pirates meets Manuel Ferro(Abner Biberman)another pirate, with word of an island with a fortune in pearls.Bucko decides to find the island bringing along Manuel who knows where the island is.The pirate also takes along Ruby Taylor(Francis Farmer)a barrom tart who Bucko feels might come in handy.

    Once at the island,Manuel is killed.

    The island chief,Kehane(Jon Hall)welcomes the pirates when they shower the people with gifts.Kehane and Ruby fall in love much to Buckos delight.Soon the couple go to a nearby island for the wedding ritual,Bucko and his men force the island people to dive for the jewels senselessly injuring and killing many of them.When the village doctor(Gene Lockhart)objects,he to is murdered.

    Ruby and Kehane return,and the chief forbids his people to do anymore diving starting a war with the pirates.
