Got a catalog from Oldies.com and noticed they now have the DVD dual set of Illegal and The Big Steal. As for as I know The Big Steal has not been available for quite a while. I have this set and it originally came with one of those multi-packs of Noir movies, which is no longer available. It is listed as a new release from Warner Archives, so is probably available elsewhere as well.

Don't watch them, but both Hallmark channels started doing Christmas movies 24/7 a few weeks ago. Of course, these are mostly their "romantic" type ones and not classics. I imagine the over the air channels that are also available on most cable systems will have lots of Christmas movies.

Our Gang/Little Rascal Comedies, almost all afternoon Laurel & Hardy shorts, or Abbot and Costello or Three Stooges Films, then later in the day and into the evening you'd watch either a lot of peplums (Sword & Sandal Flicks) or Monster/Horror films or SiFi and Thrillers. These were on every week For me to be perfect TCM should approximate a bit more of the films that graced the early TV days, show a bit more Laurel & Hardy, Abbott & Costello, more comedy shorts of Buster Keaton, Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, etc., etc., some of the old peplums, not just Ray Harryhausen's Jason and the Argonauts, and Clash of the Titans, there were a lot of Hercules and Machiste flicks, lol. These films were like slipping into old comfortable pair of shoes. I didn't watch the above then and don't watch them now so this would not appeal to me. As for channels, we had two when I was in elementary school with one being divided between ABC and NBC programming. By Jr. HS we had three.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

Think I will record Summer With Monika. I will also record Bernardine, not for its quality but rather because I recall seeing it in theater when it came out and maybe once on TV since then. -
Welcome to the board. As a Vietnam veteran I have often lamented the lack of Vietnam movies on TCM. There are a lot of movies about Vietnam, with a few mentioned on this thread. While some may have more violence and be less "patriotic" than most predecessor war movies, they are not much different from other movies TCM shows all the time at all hours of the day. TCM just seems to favor their collection of WW II era movies. The Best Years of Our Lives for example is on frequently. The Memorial Day Marathons usually do not have any Vietnam movies, even though they have been around since 1955 or so. As for The Green Berets, I read the book and saw the movie when they came out. I also served in airborne unit at Ft. Bragg, NC (Home of the Airborne and Special Forces) when the movie came out. Later served in Special Ops unit. While appreciated as a tribute to military, it was viewed pretty much as a joke. In fact, in the Army at the time the phrase to John Wayne something was a derogatory comment. This is typical of John Wayne movies, especially war movies. I don't think he really changed his acting style or focus between westerns, war movies or any other movies he did. Lawrence's suggestion re: movies from each war on Veterans Day is a good one, but actually would be better fit for TCM's Memorial Day Marathons which usually last longer.

HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

On the Spectrum Info. feature it listed a 1920's movie in the middle. However, it also showed some 60+ min. Falcon movies as being 30 mins. long. The problem was in the listing by Spectrum as the movies played as shown on TCM schedule. Spectrum has done this before. -
All the more reason to actually watch TCM. Today for instance, they have 11 The Falcon movies per the schedule.

It's a George Kind of Day Monday, November 6th
ElCid replied to Emily Dean's topic in General Discussions
Actually George's brother, Tom Conway, took on the Falcon role pretty early in the series. -
HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

Nov 6 is Falcons all day, with one other movie stuck in middle for some reason. -
Just watched Takes Over, which is based on Farewell My Lovely (the book). Interesting to see how they did it for the Falcon, Murder My Sweet and Mitchum's FML. Strikes Back is interesting comparison of Harriet Hillard's acting vs. that of Harriet Nelson's later on TV. Personally I think she was much better in Strikes Back. Maybe it was the directors? Co-Ed is only one with three stars (on Spectum info.), but I think Mexico and Strikes Back are interesting for the travelogue features. Same can be said for Out West and Hollywood. I probably watch Mexico and Strikes Back more than the others. Maybe The Saints and The Falcons can be considered Film Noir Light?

I like that it comes on Sundays at 10 AM. If in the dead of night, most people would have to record it and then watch it at 10 on Sunday. As for "family" viewing, many would say Sunday at 10 AM is when the "family" should be in church.

Nov 6 is Falcon day. Lots of good shows. The Falcon in Mexico and the Falcon and the Co-Eds are two of my favorites. Out West and In Hollywood are also very entertaining. The Falcon's Brother is when Tom Conway takes over the role from his real brother George Sanders.

Interesting question, but seems to neglect the huge number of series movies in the 30's, 40' and 50's. The Saint, The Falcon, The Thin Man and many more. In fact, I watched one of the Michael Shayne movies this afternoon. Yesterday I watched a Red Skelton Whistling movie.

For Split Second I was particularly impressed with the information re: Paul Kelly who actually served time in San Quentin for manslaughter. Liked the parts about the explosions being a tourist draw for Las Vegas. Incidentally, Las Vegas Story which was referenced is a very good movie of the period. Also of interest was all the soldiers being marched to various locations as test dummies. Many (most?) of whom developed cancer and other diseases due to radiation poisoning.

Are people using the confused reaction button as a dislike?

I use the confused button to indicate that either I don't understand what the poster is trying to say or more likely the poster doesn't make any sense. -
HITS & MISSES: Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow on TCM

If you like the Falcon movies, this is one of the better ones. If you haven't seen them, this would be a good place to start. There is a DVD set available of all the Falcon movies. -
I highly recommend Farewell My Lovely, but not The Big Sleep. As for Blu Ray, never been impressed with it. Also wonder about its ability to really improve older movies. Note Split Second on today (11/05 at 10).

NOW PLAYING email, Not the same as Postal Mail.

My biggest complaint with the printable schedule is that it is 17 pages long this month and has been longer. The schedule is actually the monthly schedule from the tcm.com main website. Last month the printable version had the actors and directors included as in the old NPG. The listings still have them, but when you select print, it deletes them??? -
TCM is showing movies on Nov. 11 and 12 "picked by eight veterans." Not sure what that means. Not as many "war" movies as they have on Memorial Day. Only Vietnam War movie is The Green Berets, which is probably worst movie made about the war.
-
Not sure what is going on with replies, but mine is that I got it today - finally. However, it is still 17 pages to print the schedule. Also it shows in emails as TCM Now P and then Remember to tune into TCM this November. Looks like spam. The subject needs to be (month) Now Playing Guide.

They really need to get rid of the emojis or whatever the heck they are. Makes it even more difficult to read posts. God knows what it will be like when certain members start adding in the huge grapahics, images and videos from other sources. It will be one post per page!!!!

I'm testing to see if I can post since the spot in upper left corner where you used to click to sign in keeps reading sign in. I did it twice. As usual, changes made for no apparent reason and no explanation of how to navigate the new system.
