Is it time to change the title of this thread since it no longer has anything to do with Labor Day movies?
-
So much so that I'm not going to laundry list my issues with the film (which I just watched AGAIN)...
(i think i've seen it at least 8 times or so by now)
I just HAVE to admit, I don't think there is any other title out there in all filmdom that I do not like EVEN AFTER TRYING REALLY HARD TO- and in spite of positive notices from several people whose opinions I value highly and with whom I am generally simpatico- than IN A LONELY PLACE.
I feel like everyone's looking at GUERNICA and all I see is dogs playing poker....
Sort of agree with you. I watched it just to hear the introduction and closeout. Then got suckered into watching it again even though I have it on DVD. It does hold my attention. Actually I kind of hate when they show alternate endings for movies.
I think it is a good movie, but not one of the best Noir's by a long shot. To me, it is more a mystery/romance movie.
Gloria Graham was good in it and while I like Audrey Trotter, not sure she would have been better.
Also, maybe the Bogart character gets more sympathy from viewers because he is Bogart? As opposed to the hard core criminal he was in some other movies, such as Petrified Forest.

Thought I would post this each day and change the number, in the unlikely event anyone at TCM reads these or cares.
You would think as a minimum somebody would take the initiative to go to the list of people who have registered and send an email saying it is broke and TCM hopes to have it fixed by_________.

Your point being?

Still do not have mine.
Out of curiosity I checked for Spectrum's basic packages - apparently there is no such thing anymore. They begin with Select, which has TCM and TCM On Demand (through Spectrum, not tcm.com). Hard to figure out as all the websites push bundling.
But it appears TCM is included in their lowest cost services. Of course, I am sure that if you call and push them they will offer the service that FCC requires that is much lower in cost and has far fewer channels. At least there used to be such a service.
Point is, we are not paying for TCM per se as much as the provider is paying TCM. But provider cannot sell advertising space on TCM as it can on most other channels.

I wanted to print the schedule and descriptions of the movies playing and it is 24 pages!!!! that's a lot of paper!!!!
Unless I can do them double sided.
It is still a lot of paper and ink. Not the cost so much as the inconvenience of getting more paper and ink.
In a better world, TCM would design the printer version so that it would be the same type size as the defunct print NPG. Also eliminate a lot of the "white space" in the printable version.
Did find out that my inexpensive Canon printer does do two sided if I select that. Still a lot of paper and ink.

Yeah, I've tried it too, before and it didnt work. (I'd forgotten) Maybe my cable isnt TCM friendly? What does cable have to do with watching it online HERE on Tcm's site? I cant get any prompt for that!
I tried to register via my internet provider this morning and it seemed to accept it. Just now I tried to watch a movie and got a pop-up saying not authorized, contact TV provider. That means Spectrum which wants far too much information and creates an online account for me, which I do not want.
I agree, why do I need to utilize my TV provider to see something on the internet?
Apparently you can watch the clips without registering and logging in.
I guess part of it is a deal between TCM and TV provider so that TV provider will know you are watching something from TCM, but not on your TV service.
-
Go to "Watch TCM", then click "Movies on Demand". Most (but not all) of what TCM airs is listed in alphabetical order, along with the dates available for re-viewing (usually a 5 to 7 day window of opportunity). Look for your cable or satellite provider, then log in using the information you use to get on the Message Board here. Also, in most cases, you will not see any commentary by the host (or guest) either before or after the film is shown, but each movie does have a "details" link where you can learn more about the movie you're interested in. You don't even have to sign in to read the details about a picture or the comments that some people have left over the years.
Doesn't work. I tried that, but Spectrum requires that I input confidential information and sign up for their online service, which I do not want to do. May try for telephone company, but I don't do online with them either.
OK tried from internet provider. Pop up said they would automatically sign me in in the future (at TCM On Demand I guess). Selected a movie (Beast of the City) and nothing. Selected a clip from it and that played. Then selected movie again and has been doing something for last few minutes, loading I guess. Closed it down.
Not sure I want to watch a movie on my computer anyway. Chair is not all that comfortable.
Thanks for the advice though. Will try again later.

That's good! (I mean that everything else is ok) Didnt realize you lived in FL. Guess we can both commiserate. I dont always check the schedule ahead of time.
How is Spectrum? I've been considering changing cable companies.........I've got stuff from them in the mail.Actually I'm in northwestern S.C. Spectrum is the former Charter. We like it. Actually it is down right now, but that is a street problem. Big tree knocked down power, telephone and cable lines and they are still working on it. People three blocks away do not have power yet. Not sure why my ATT line works and cable doesn't but who knows where all the lines come from.
Several years ago I was having problems and the techs they sent couldn't reliably fix it, so I wrote a letter to the CEO in VA. Got a call from an assistant who took charge. Within a few days I had two supervisors and two techs in my den trying all kinds of things. Concluded I needed a new higher quality underground cable. Within a week had that and new cables in the house. No problems since.
Never completely lost cable, just some stations wouldn't come in or it would go out for a few minutes (near as I can remember).
Their phone call in system is way better than it used to be, except for now which is understandable.
Did learn one thing from a tech, the "new" box may actually be one that someone turned in or a reconditioned one. But if it works, that is fine.
ATT which we use for phone and internet keeps making offers, but see no reason to change.
Like all providers, the bill will go up when the "deals" expire, but just call and ask for a new deal. If that doesn't work, call and ask for a Retention agent/representative. Will get a deal, but it will expire also.

WIsh I'd known this before today. Too late now.

Thanks to Irma I missed all of them. Cable is still out, but everything else is OK for me. Not sure if it is lack of power to the Spectrum facility (doubt it) or downed cable lines.

Please stay safe and don't go on the roof to adjust the antenna. I remember my dad "roofing" around adjusting the antenna and my Mom shouting out the window with directions...similar to her driving directions on our many 50's road trips
I remember both of those situations. My favorite from late 50's is when we would be in middle of nowhere at a stop sign and the old man would tell my mother "Move your bushy head so I can see if anything is coming."
Actually antenna is one of those new versions of rabbit ears and it sits on top of cabinet TV is in. I get 2 of the regular local stations which is good for local news and weather, such as it is. Then get most of the other over the air networks-Cozi, MeTV, GetTV, etc.
But, it ain't TCM.

Yep Cid, not even the hawking of the DeSotos on television for years by THIS guy would save the marque...

Btw, here's one of my all-time favorite Virgil Exner "Forward Look" designs from that era...the 1957 DeSoto Fireflite...

(...since I was a kid, I've always loved the look of those three taillights sticking out of each of those tail fins on the DeSotos)
This is my favorite car. '58 De Soto Fireflite Sportsman. The front was a little more restrained for late 50's De Soto's. The triple taillights were what separated De Soto's from rest of Chrysler Corp cars.BTW, my posting image is a '56 Chrysler New Yorker St. Regis which may be a tie for favorite.

Well, thanks to Irma will probably miss most, if not all, of them. No damage to speak of, but lost power until 7:00 PM last night. Spectrum cable is still out as of 10:00 this morning. Agent says Spectrum "power plant" in my locality is out and they are last on list to get repairs. Which is understandable.
Do have a TV with an antenna, so not too bad.
But dang, going to miss some good "B" crime movies!

Got any pics you can post?
Not good at that, but typically would be 55-57 Chrysler, Plymouth, De Soto and Dodges. Many convertibles which were usually second most expensive car for a brand. Ironically, most expensive was usually a station wagon-higher cost to manufacture and low sales.
Lots of De Sotos, but by late 50's Chrysler Corp was having problems with sales of the brand - it was gone by 61.
-
I believe that it may be that it was at that time considered gauche to flee a robbery on foot and so they stole a vehicle for their getaway. It would be natural for them to steal the best available.
While some were stolen, most were their own vehicles or at least it appears that way.
I think it is more that Chrysler Corporation thought it better marketing to showcase their most expensive models.

I think TCM has done fairly well in the past on showing Sci-Fi. It would be nice to see more or them and as has been suggested maybe have a block on Saturdays or late night.
Have been really disappointed in "Cult Favorites" on Saturdays. Last Saturday I recorded two based on descriptions on Spectrum info and TCM, only too find out they were animated and foreign language. Quickly deleted both. I think lot of sci-fi movies used to show up on "Cult Favorites."
There are a lot of the sci-fi movies mentioned so far available on DVD and in DVD sets. Some are quite reasonably priced. While not free, you can watch them whenever you wish.

As of one minute ago, I have not received mine. Not in inbox or spam. Have tcm.com included in my address book.
They should have kept the print version going until they knew that all "subscribers" to email version were receiving it.
Very poor planning on TCM management's part.

Sho' 'nuff Darg. Been seeing a LOT of Mopar metal on both "Leave It To Beaver" and "Perry Mason" recently too. Although MASON seemed over the years, to switch back and forth between Chrysler and Ford.
And since that Jaguar E-type has long been a favorite of mine, I'd go into hock OVER MY HEAD to get any one. New electric model or classic '60's. Don't matter to me. Sexiest looking sports car ever!
When DECADES was playing their BURKE'S LAW "binge" this past weekend, the last one they showed was when HONEY WEST was introduced to audiences. And she was driving a white Jaguar .
For the "Honey West" series for some reason, it was switched to that cool AC COBRA.
Sepiatone
I almost ordered an E Type before I left Vietnam in 71. Fortunately I didn't as my home was 2 hours from the dealership and the cars were very trouble prone. Worked with a guy once in mid-70's that owned a late 60's one. It was semi-permanently garaged as no one could find the brake components he needed - including the dealership and distributors in Atlanta. Think it took about six months to get them from England and on the car.
Then the Lucas electrical system was the worst.
But, probably most beautiful car ever made.

Highway Patrol is back on MeTV at 5(?) AM weekdays. It's not Law and Order, but is a pretty good show to watch. I have the DVD's and it is one of the ones to watch to kill a half hour to an hour. Nothing against Broderick Crawford, but definitely not the guy who won an Oscar for All the King's Men.
William Boyett is also interesting. He was one of the guys who showed up a cops a lot. He also had a frequently recurring role in Adam 12.
While the HP cars (Dodges & Buicks) are interesting, I've always liked all the Chrysler Corp. products that show up. Dodges, Plymouths and De Sotos.
Amusing that the bad guys were knocking over businesses and other things for $50 to $100 takes and then drive off in a $3,000 to $4,000 (1957ish price) car. And mostly convertibles, but that was probably for the filming.
Never found any info. on it but I think Chrysler did a lot to get its cars into TV and movies in the 50's and 60's.

Noir AlleyVerified account @NoirAlley 4h4 hours ago
Join us for @EddieMuller's favorite film IN A LONELY PLACE ('50) next week at 10am ET here on #NoirAlley!
I noticed today that he said next week's movie is his favorite of all. So I had to go look up the schedule to find out what was coming. Hopefully next week he will explain why it is his favorite. I have it on DVD, but will watch the opening (if I remember) for his introduction.
Not a bad movie, but not typical Noir in my opinion.

Nice to see TCM is showing the Universal film Borderline' Have never seen this one and it has a fine cast.
I enjoy The Racket; Yea, not the best Mitchum noir (he is somewhat flat in this film), but it does have noir icons Robert Ryan (who is great in the film), and Liz Scott.
Spoiler alert! One caution about Borderline, there is a scene where Trevor joins a group of female dancers and they sing. The song is one that is so annoying, you remember it for days. But it does have an great cast and the plot is fairly good. Having seen Raymond Burr in Perry Mason series before seeing his movies, it is a little surprising. He does PM very well, but then in his many bad guy roles he was also very convincing.
You are right about The Racket. Mitchum is his usual laid back (perhaps too much) and lets Ryan take over the show.

Starting at 6:00 AM, Wed. Sep 13,TCM will have 10 crime shows.
6-Bunco Squad
7:15-Code Two
8:30-Sgt. Madden
10-Under Cover of Night
11:15-From Headquarters
12:30-The Racket
2:15-Bullets or Ballots
3:45-Borderline
5:30-Tear Gas Squad
6:30-The Beast of the City
Of the ones I have seen, Borderline is my favorite. Another one of those light comedic mysteries with a touch of romance. Stars Fred MacMurray, Claire Trevor and Raymond Burr.
I printed off a copy from the Monthly Schedule and this time it printed everything! Still takes almost a page per day though.

Thank you to chaz45342 for bringing up the issue and to cmovieviewer--with an assist from MovieCollectorOH--for offering a pdf guide for themes, premieres, etc. for September's films on TCM. I miss that information in printed format, a format which is much easier for me to routinely access and use.
Chaz45342, your experience is the same as my own. After years of purchasing the Now Playing Guide, I signed up for the newsletter several times, checked my spam folders and emails, all to no avail.
I haven't read older posts, so I don't know if cmovieviewer's guide was mentioned earlier. Just want to say thank you for your posts, as I now have a guide that adds the extra details I'd relied on in the Now Playing Guide.
Still have not received the NPG email. Check spam before deleting. I did do one thing though and that was to add tcm.com to my email lists. I have two threads where I receive notifications of new posts and noticed they were going to spam, but now go to inbox.
That may help - IF TCM ever gets the system going.

Next Sunday's feature will be In A Lonely Place with Bogart and Graham. Somewhat different in that Bogart is not an actual criminal in the Noir sense.

Netflix & the slow death of the classic film (Newsweek)
in General Discussions
Posted
I do not use any streaming service nor do I patronize Amazon. Do not watch movies or TV on anything other than a real TV. Don't use facebook either. So my input is sort of limited.
I do find it ironic that Newsweek is no longer a print magazine and they are presaging the demise of another media form.
As to DVD's, they are not dead yet and neither are CD's. I base this on the number of catalogs I receive each month with hundreds, if not thousands, of DVD's listed. New ones all the time. Got four in today's mail alone. Most of these have sections of Classic Films.
Heck, even vinyl LP's are making a comeback.
I think Blockbuster and similar stores disappeared not only because of streaming services, but also because cable companies began offering movies On Demand. Not to mention the lowering of DVD prices. Today's $29.95 DVD will be $19.95 in six months and maybe $9.95 in a year or two.
