Thanks, Lorna--but I'm not smart enough to put the review of Country Music in the "I Just Watched" thread where it belongs.

Didn't somebody start a thread on the Country Music series?

  2. After several scenes I remembered I had seen Nocturne before, but didn't really remember any of it.  It was worth watching, but I thought much of it was too contrived, especially the ending.

Have never liked George Raft.  He seems one dimensional or wooden as my wife would say.  Way too much of that here.  The first role I appreciated  Lynn Bari was as a reporter in The Falcon Takes Over.

  3. I am currently reading the Matt Helm series, which was been re-released a few years ago.  Not James Bond, but a secret agent from the same era.  Interesting enough that I will probably purchase all of them - about half-way through now.

Incidentally, you have to erase Dean Martin and his Matt Helm movies from your memory.

Yeah, I think he [George Lazenby] gets a bad rap. This is one of my favorite early Bond movies. Great action sequences and Diana Rigg is in it! A bit slow in the beginning, but once it kicks in, hang on to your seat! I plan on watching it again.

I agree that Lazenby was better than most give him credit for.  A little more effort by producers and directors and he easily could have become one of the better Bonds.

Saw this from my Real Clear Defense website, and thought some of you would be interested reading it!

War Books, Special Edition – Seventeen Great War Films: One Army Officer’s List

    https://mwi.usma.edu/war-books-special-edition-seventeen-great-war-films-one-army-officers-list/

The author is Brendan Gallagher published on September 9, 2019
Brendan Gallagher is a US Army lieutenant colonel in the infantry with multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. He holds a PhD from Princeton and is currently a battalion commander. He is the author of the book The Day After: Why America Wins the War but Loses the Peace (Cornell University Press, forthcoming release on September 15). The views expressed are those of the author and do not reflect the official position of the United States Military Academy, Department of the Army, or Department of Defense.

Wouldn't be my list, but to each his own.  No, I don't have a list and am not going to comment on why I would not consider most of these as "Great War Films."  Now if he is talking about entertainment value or reinforcing stereotypes as created by those in military that may be something different.

I hated Under the Yum Yum Tree. Jack Lemmon's character is such a creep--probably one of the worst characters he's ever played.

I was already planning on recording Bunny Lake is Missing.  I haven't seen Return to Peyton Place. I haven't seen The Pleasure Seekers either.  I may also record Blue Denim

The Pleasure Seekers shows up fairly often on Fox Movie Channel.

That argument has been made many times over the years in my town. Some years you don't hear it much, but in others there are editorials submitted to the local paper, or people pleading during city council/county commissioners/school board meetings calling for a ban on treat-or-treating and any "unholy" Halloween displays. It's during those years that I get motivated enough to decorate my house with hanging skeletons, skulls in the windows, and other "unholy" Halloween displays.

One thing that's taken off in popularity here is "trunk-or-treating", where kids are taken to the parking lot of a school, business, or church, and people hand out candy kept in the trunk of their vehicle. It's supposed to be safer and more reassuring to the parents, and the ones held in church parking lots are usually followed by a special Halloween church service to ward off evil spirits. The year is 2019.

Here the trunk or treating at the church is followed by all the kids fanning out into the surrounding neighborhood to trick or treat.  I live two blocks from the church.

Candice was on a bit of a run there for a while. 5 Emmys for the first 7 years of Murphy Brown (which she was very good in). After that, to give others a chance, she asked her name to be removed from the ballot.....And then Helen Hunt won 4 years in a row for Mad About You. Candice did have the record for most Emmys for anybody in a single role until Julia Louis-Dreyfuss won 6 in a row for Veep on HBO. If Ms. Louis-Dreyfuss wins the category again this year (she most likely will), she will set the most Emmys record, taking the title away from Cloris Leachman.

I have watched all the episodes of Veep.  Not sure why Louis-Dreyfus won so many times, especially for years 3-6.  7 is better, but still not great.  Have seen Louis-Dreyfus in a lot, but think she did better in Christmas Vacation than anything else.

I have long believed that Emmys, Oscars and other awards should not be repeatable.  Say, a winner has to sit out for the nest two or three years.

Stuart Margolin made a marvelous contribution to The Rockford Files as a despicable coniving little weaselly con artist, and more than a bit of a coward, who would leave Jimmy Rockford out to dry any time it served his purpose. The actor was oily and funny simultaneously in the role of Angel Martin, and had a gift for dialogue delivery. The only question was why Rockford continued to put up with him.

Margolin, by the way, had earlier been featured in another television series starring James Garner, Nichols. After Garner's death Margolin said that he had been better to him than any other man outside of his father.

Margolin was also a recurring character in Bret Maverick, another Garner production.  I have seen the Nichols episodes in past year or so, but not really impressed.

Margolin should have gotten an Emmy for most "interesting" hair while in Rockford.

I'll be honest, he always kind of got on my nerves. (MARGOLIN)

While he had a limited range, I always enjoyed his roles.  Of course he was best (probably) in the Rockford Files.  He also had something to do with Love, American Style TV series.  Producer and/or director maybe.  He also starred in many of them.

Good question. The shorts had not yet been added to the day's schedule when I took those screen shots.

Always been interesting that if I use the Charter guide sometimes it lists shorts and sometimes it doesn't.  Guess it depends on when TCM lets them know about the addition of shorts.

Funny about the Hallmark Channel and their July programming!    I'm also not opposed to theme-based programming but like you,  I want it "limited".

As for SUTS:   I'm a fan when TCM features versatile actors and thus there should be a good degree of genre diversity.   I also like when NON-stars are featured (e.g. actors that were leads, secondary leads, and supporting players,,,, like Van Heflin) since these actors tend to have a diverse film legacy.

Like you I don't wish for a day focused on a specific genre (even noir!! ha ha) or too much on one actor and that can happen with SUTS when a major A list star is featured.

PS: So how many T&T are you really getting.   My wife and I have lived here for 22 years and in the first 10 we would get around 25 - 30,  but for a few years we got < 10 so we just leave the lights out and I go jam with my buddies.

Between 600 and 1,000 trick or treaters - honestly.  It has sort of become a community event for our street to be "featured."

No, but like New Years Eve, Halloween is often a "stay home" holiday. There's nothing I enjoy more than watching classic horror movies (or horror comedies, etc) in between trick or treaters. I know the films well enough, leaving the room for 5 minutes won't matter much.

I often enjoy "holiday marathons", TV themed ones as well as classic movies, probably because at my age I don't go out much.

Since we have between 600 and 1,000 trick or treaters, no such thing as "between trick or treaters."

Two weeks is too-much IMO.   Just like two-weeks of Christmas themed films would be too-much in December.

Also,  you appear to assume a majority or TCM fans support this type of themed based programming going on for two-weeks of the month;       Based no feedback at this forum I would say no;  I.e. most feel that two-weeks is too-much.    (just like they do for other holidays, as well as February, Oscar month).

Note that I'm a TCM Insider and TCM will survey us about this.   Sadly I don't know what the results are.

I guess this means you don't watch the Hallmark Channel when they do solid months of July and December for Christmas movies.

I am not opposed to themes for a couple of days or a day.  On the other hand I really dislike SUTS and others when they focus on one person for a whole day.  Similarly I would dislike a day focused on musicals or romances.
