Bah. Back in the day, you drove one of these cars if you commonly and routinely did a full day's work in the course of your life. Working men--that's who these vehicles were made for.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.  But not unexpected.  My mother and my sister both drove Dodge Darts and they were not working men.

Can anyone explain why Tommy Lee Jones is not included in the credits of any movies in the database? Coal Miner's Daughter, The Fugitive, JFK, Men in Black ...? It's like he's been scrubbed out.

Probably because he roomed with Al Gore in college?  I like Tommy Lee Jones' performances.

This thread is about a topic that is eating up a lot of public resources,  especially here in CA;  I.e. it is NOT 'trivial' in that regard.

E.g. almost every city \ county school, building,  street,  etc... that is named after someone is being 'reviewed' to determine if the name\title is 'appropriate'.    Public artwork is also under review; (e.g. the Ava Gardner mural with 'sun rays' that offended some Korean activist,  or art that has what looks like a swastika etc....).

As I said before I find this to be a waste of public resources.

Be glad you don't live in the South as it will only get worse here.  The college from which I graduated was founded in part in order to provide a trained military body to suppress any potential slave uprisings.  Most of the campus buildings are named after Confederate officers.

Haha reminds me of one of my favorite abandoned movie palaces....there are gorgeous glazed tiles of swastikas- most likely made at a famous PA tileworks that relied on traditional European design, especially those with PA "dutch" connections, like the Swastika. There are two gargoyle heads way at the top of the building of devil (krampus style) heads with long Gene Simmons tongues. If it wasn't sitting forgotten in a practically abandoned town it would be a controversial national treasure.

You all realize Christians pretty much removed any imagery of the traditional red devil from US Halloween about two decades ago. You'll find headband horns and sexy red devil costumes, but never any home decorations depicting the "traditional" red devil. (I know-I collect devil imagery)

    I'm amazed this survives:

Also, the good "Christians" raised cane with Chrysler Corporation re: the Dodge Demon (based on fantastic Dodge Dart).  Forced them to change the name.  Ironically, Chrysler is bringing it back apparently.  Now it is the Challenger SRT Demon.Image result for original dodge demon

I am not a liberal or a right wing fanatic, but keep your politics out of it. John Wayne was a legend in the movie industry for almost half of a century and he brought joy and excitement to the everyday man who put their money down to see his films. Don't strip him of the honor.  Remember his final scene in THE SHOOTIST when Ron Howard avenges his murder and throws the gun away and JW approves with his last breath.

The name of a public, taxpayer supported facility has nothing to do with his abilities as actor, mediocre as they really were.  Hey, I like John Wayne movies for pure entertainment value.  Have several on DVD.

Does it make sense to change the name of the airport on the basis of which political party is gaining control?

That is how it became John Wayne airport to begin with - politics.

We found a way to avoid some of that crap here in the "D"( except for that convention center  ;) )

There's two airports that serve the area.....

One inside the city "proper", and one in the nearby city named Romulus.  The airport IN the city is simply called "City Airport", and the larger international airport in Romulus is named "Metropolitan Airport" known by us here as simply "METRO Airport".  ;)

    Sepiatone

I prefer airports named after the city where it is located or the region.  Let's travelers know where they are actually going for one thing.

I remember years ago (probably hasn't changed) when people would not know where Greenville or Spartanburg SC were, but they did know where Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport was.  It's between the two cities.

The pre-GSP airport for Greenville is now the Greenville Downtown Airport.

If he lived there then he was probably one of it's more "outstanding" citizens, paying a high enough level of property tax to help out the ol' revenue!  ;)  And despite what any of us HERE think and feel, he did bring a lot of good feelings to millions of American movie goers, so....

Here in Detroit there's a flap about renaming a long time exhibit/convention center and arena called COBO HALL, named for one of the city's more memorable mayors (Albert Cobo) who died in office in 1957.  The center was built and opened in 1961.  It recently came to light that Cobo was, according to some who remember him well, a rabid racist, and while in office was actually behind a lot of the city's then "institutional" racism concerning restrictions to African-American rights to purchase homes and property in Detroit.  There's now a move to rename THAT place

The arena was long a premier concert venue, and too, several local HIGH SCHOOLS( including MY class) leased the arena for graduation commencements. But, I'm no longer a resident, so I have no say, nor do I CARE what they choose to do about it's name.

    Sepiatone

Sort of my point about not naming things after people.  Also tends to support letting the people of Orange Co. change the name of John Wayne Airport.  Who named it that to begin with?

This whole discussion also mirrors the national debate over removing Confederate statues, names and so forth.  Same concept.

Late to this party, I'd have to say I don't care what some place names an airport, or WHY, but in cases like this, the man's political leanings shouldn't have anything to do with it.  He was famous and well loved for being a "Movie star" BEFORE anybody knew OR cared about his political leanings, and so the name should remain IMHO.

    Sepiatone

A person's "political leanings" and other personal aspects of life should definitely have something to do with naming a public and/or publicly supported facility after someone.  Other than acting and making a lot of money in the process, what did John Wayne actually contribute to Orange County, California or the US?

  8. Not to change the direction (much), but it sort of parallels this discussion.  First, many "Confederate" soldier statues were almost mirror images of "Union" soldier statues.  Same companies produced and erected both.  Second, if "Confederate" soldier monuments should be removed because they are insensitive and so forth, what about removing the Union soldier monuments because they are insensitive to some Southerners or other descendants of Confederate soldiers?

So, I recommend we remove all monuments to everybody, every group, ad infinitum.

I knew somebody would ask me that here, Rich.

And so the answer to this would be, no. I've always called it JFK International Airport.

And the reason I don't and never have called it Idlewild is because, well, remember in my previous post I prefaced my comment with :"All the years I worked in the Airline industry"?

Well, I was only a smartazzed little 11 y/o kid when they changed the name to JFK International back in '63, and so was MUCH too young to have been employed with any airline at the time.

And thus, the name JFK International would be what I had come to know that airport as a decade later and when this then 21 y/o smartazzed young man would begin his "oh so glamorous" airline career at Los Angeles International Airport!  ;)

    (...IATA code: LAX)

Anyone else remember that they changed the name of Cape Canaveral to Cape Kennedy and there was a protest over it.  So they changed it back to Cape Canaveral, but the location of the Kennedy Space Center.

I agree. We should use numerals. Like "Airport 1," Airport 2," etc. Of course, someone might get upset since we'd be using Hindu-Arabic numerals. So how about Roman numerals? No, the Romans were bastards, forget that. How about ... ah, never mind, the idea sucks, I admit it.

No, just not after people.  Of course that also is problematic.  For instance Washington National Airport would be named for city or first president?  Yeah, I know. It is officially Reagan.

  11. One of the problems with naming items after people is that things change as time evolves. My personal philosophy is that items should be named after people ONLY if they directly and personally contributed more than 50% of the cost of the thing.  Especially for public items.

Best case scenario is that we just stop naming things after people.

As for changing John Wayne airport, he was the one who decided to engage in controversial and often hypocritical political positions.  And as Lawrence said, it is up to the people in that area to decide, not us.  Definitely not for people in politically incorrect South.

    Female Jungle (1956)  -  5/10

    220px-Femalejungle.jpg

Very low-budget noir, the only one released by AIP. When a hot new Hollywood starlet is murdered, the cops think it may have been off-duty detective Lawrence Tierney. Larry was blackout drunk, so he's not even sure if he's guilty or not, and decides to investigate the case himself. Featuring Burt Kaiser (who also produced and co-wrote) as a sweaty artist, Kathleen Crowley as his wife, Jayne Mansfield (in her movie debut) as his girlfriend, John Carradine as a creepy publicity columnist, Bruno Ve Sota (who also directed and co-wrote), and a handful of actors using pseudonyms: Duane Gray (as Rex Thorsen), Cornelius Keefe (as Jack Hill), Davis Roberts (as Robert Davis), and Alan Jay Factor (as Alan Frost).

This was shot in '54, but sat around until Mansfield made a name for herself. Co-star Crowley was reportedly sexually assaulted (off set) during production and left the movie, so they cut her role and used a stand-in. The whole film is a bit clumsily edited and shoddily filmed, but it adds a little seedy flavor to things. It's also a bit too talky. I liked Carradine, with streaks of silver hair and large glasses, nattily dressed. He scares Crowley with his state-of-art home stereo system on which he plays classical music too loudly. Mansfield looks good, too.

OK, tell us about the "female jungle."  Surely it takes more than two women to make a "jungle."

As I have said before, they need to determine the awards 3 years after the movie comes out.  Let all the hoopla and buzz die down.  Of course, the studios will still do their politicking, advertising, campaigning and arm twisting.

    A Cry in the Night (1956)  -  6/10

    220px-Cry_in_the_night_1956_poster_small

Thriller featuring Raymond Burr as an unstable man-child who kidnaps Natalie Wood. Her cop father Edmond O'Brien, along with fellow cop Brian Donlevy and Natalie's boyfriend Richard Anderson, desperately search for her, while she tries to reason with Burr before he does something drastic. Also with Irene Hervey, Carol Veazie, Mary Lawrence, Peter Hanson, and Anthony Caruso. I've seen this kind of story a hundred times (it's on every other cop show each week, as well), so any enjoyment was dependent on the film's style and cast. The former, unfortunately, is pedestrian and uninspired. The cast makes it passable, though, with strong work by Burr. I had to chuckle at the scene early in the film when Burr bashes Anderson in the head. I'll think of it the next time I see any of the Perry Mason reruns featuring the two of them. The poster above is rather sleazy.

Weren't all posters for similar movies from this period sleazy?  Just like the covers on pulp fiction books.  I have been watching the Honey West TV series and Irene Hervey is one of the three main actors.  I think she plays Honey's aunt(?), but sort of takes care of the office/home where Honey lives.

this is why you need old school TV space cadets for that special perspective in programming that you'll never gonna get from crime noir schtootzes.

me, I can think of 2 great movies right off and not that beaten into the ground creature from the black lagoon either. supposedly better than it's sequel Revenge of the Creature which is bull. the 2nd movie has what the first one shoulda had. an exciting escape rampage story. the first was too bogged down with those seemingly endless underwater sequences which had the creature swimming up and down and all around the delectably leggy Julie Adams. I must admit the friction between Carlson and Denning is good drama but they shoulda moved on to the good stuff like with the 2nd film.

now while Julie Adams wasn't a major star imo she rates a tribute especially given the number of time slackers inc. tcm have shown the creature from the black lagoon and it is easy. any space cadet automatically knows what two films to show…

    1. the private war of major benson

with a charming performance from miss Julie as a military school nurse and chuck heston to boot!

    :)

I'm a Julie Adams fan and I enjoyed the movie, but only because I went to a military college.  As I recall it was not that good of a movie.  Adams did not have a distinguishing role and Heston was mediocre.  Relating to little children is not what Heston does well.

One of the over the air stations was showing those shows last year.  I watched two or three just because of Julie Adams.  Unfortunately she couldn't save the shows. Don't know if was the writing, Jimmy Stewart or the plot in general, but just not appealing to me.  It did stay on for a year or more though.
