I understand I do it for a myriad of reasons.  Long habit, many books from my library & it also may draw more attention to said subject matter. PLUS, I have a hard time posting in bold

ElCid, what are some of your fav. music scores?

If speaking only of main themes or one "song" from movies: Body Heat, Exodus, Driving Miss Daisy, Route 66 (TV), A Summer Place, Patton Theme and most earlier James Bonds.  Most by Henry Mancini, John Barry, Hugo Montenegro.  I'm sure there would be others if I though about it or went and started pulling CD's.

Also The Big Chill, American Graffiti, Stand By Me, Forest Gump and similar.  But those are compilations of rock music from the 50's and 60's.

  2. I noticed that FXM is showing Raiders From Beneath the Sea again.  This is during their 3:00 AM till 3:00 PM time frame where they tend to show older movies without commercials.  Not a lot of variety, but some interesting ones periodically.

Raiders sounds like a SciFi or war movie, but it is a crime movie.  Merry Anders is the chief attraction.  But the premise is sort of interesting, if somewhat far fetched.

SPOILER:  They rob a bank on Catalina Island by swimming under water with scuba gear to get there and escape.

    Tex Ritter on Starz

    ARIZONA TRAIL with Fuzzy Knight

DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS with Johnny Mack Brown

THE LONE STAR TRAIL with Jennifer Holt

Starz Western channel used to show Gene Autry movies at Noon on Sundays.  Always enjoyed them, but they rarely show any Autry movies any more.  I'll watch some of the new ones, but somehow just not as entertaining-and I don't mean the singing.  Right now they are big on Hopalong Cassidy movies and TV series in mornings.

My guess would be the site administrators created the billboard, as I don't think anyone else would be able to. As others have mentioned, Kyle wasn't just a frequent board contributor, but was also, on at least one occasion, an on screen presenter with Robert Osborne (see video below). Kyle also seems to be of an era when the message board was more vibrant, with more users actively posting, and a more important part of the TCM "machinery". This was before the current heavy emphasis on other social media platforms, like Facebook and Twitter, which have rendered the message boards an afterthought. More than one person has mentioned their surprise that the boards are even continued at this point. It may be due to the annual classes, which seem to be the only time of year when a large number of people use this service, instead of just us more frequent, devoted, and ever-dwindling few.

Thanks.  As for forums such as this, they are dying out.  I am on two related to automobiles, both operated by the manufacturers.  One no longer has places where you can comment.  If you go to the site, you can select "news" items and videos about upcoming cars, events, etc.  But just to watch them.  I think the commentary portion has pretty much moved to their facebook and similar sites.  They do occasionally send out email surveys.

On the other one, you can still comment, respond and so forth.  They are about 60 registered users, but only about four or five of us are actually active.  By active, I mean we log on once per week to see if anything has happened.  They also present "news" videos and so forth.  Here again, I think the commentary portion has moved to facebook or whatever.  I do not do facebook, twitter or any others.  They do not do surveys, but they have a section for ideas.

On a couple of more automotive related sites that are independent, but by brand.  Some are quite active.  Good places to ask questions and seek out information.  Have a friend who is active on four or five railroad and railroad modeling sites.  He says they are fairly active, but they are independents.

Also, the Kyle Kersten 'thingie', make it impossible to use the MONTH HIGHLIGHTS tab!

OK, who created the Kyle Kersten "billboard" and made it part of the TCM forums home page?  While he may have been "an important contributor" so have lots of other people.  In fact, there was a thread recently about members who gone "missing."  What about honoring them?

I have every reason to believe, and suspect there is a report to prove it, feature films have become longer in running times, in a linear fashion. Older films - shorter. Newer films - longer. So, TCM is digging into the newer films more frequently.

That may be the answer.  I also believe that they are showing more "shorts."  And shorts are not movies IMO.  With showing shorter movies mixed with longer movies and more shorts, it does require expert manipulation of start times.

Of course, they also need to sell something.  Interesting that people mention the wine club and backlot group, but seldom mention the ads for DVD's and other products.

  7. Tropic Noirs?  Guess His Kind of Woman would fit as well as Macao.  Then you might could add in The Big Steal.

Maybe Eddie could start a new series:  Tropic Noirs or maybe South of the Border Noirs?  That would open up a whole lot of movies.

But we get into that "discussion" of what separates Noir from crime from mystery movies.

Am I the only person who thinks Eddie Muller is a self-important doofus?

Who picks "The Letter" -- a great William Wyler film with one of Bette Davis' best performances -- as part of the noir genre?

(and is there anything more annoying than Muller shilling the silly, ill-advised TCM Wine Club with the equally obnoxious Tenaya Darlington?)

This guy thinks he's the cat's meow!

I have or have seen most of the Noir Alley movies, but I still record and watch them to hear Eddie Muller's commentary.  I was kind of disappointed in The Letter being shown and to me his narratives were too focused on the director, producer and star rather than the movie.

I don't think Muller is "self-important" as much as well informed.  His presentations are from someone who knows whereof they speak.

As for the wine club, I just switch the channel.  Problem is that TCM is Free to us.  OK, may require upgrading to a different tier, but still basically free.  So, TCM has to make money somehow - unless you want commercials throughout the movies.

  9. I watched The Letter Sunday.  Sorry, may have great producer, director and star, but just not impressed.  My wife and I both watched it and had seen it before.  Both had same impression.  It's a good mystery/drama, but not great.

Not sure what genre it is, but it is not Noir.

Dracula also features a possum, which looks like a large rat. You also see a beetle or cricket of some sort crawling out a coffin. They obviously used a tiny coffin, I guess to make the bug look like it is enormous.

They used possums, armadillos and bugs, as Dracula was supposed to be in tune with the "low things" of the world. Audiences were creeped out by the armadillos in areas of the country where they aren't native, and many viewers had never seen one before.

Old joke.  An armadillo is a possum on the half shell.

Maybe that is the actual title. I know Lugosi did several films as Dracula. Is Mark of the Vampire the one where Renfield goes to the castle in Transylvania to close the deal on the mansion the count has purchased in England? I think that's the one with the armadillo.

SPOILER:  Mark of the Vampire is the one where Lugosi, his daughter and another man are actually actors pretending to be vampires.  They are hired to root out a murderer.  All takes place in the mansion in Prague.   Entirely possible they used armadillos as rats in other "vampire" movies though.

Ha, I never thought of that, but it sure makes sense. I thought I was the only one to notice these obscure, but questionable details in movies. Most people don't pay attention or simply don't care. I'm glad to know there are others like me.

I updated my post.  You may actually be referring to 1935's Mark of the Vampire.

Here's another one. Why do they show an armadillo in the Bela Lugosi film "Dracula". My understanding is they are not native to Eastern Europe. That's always caught my attention when watching that old horror flick. I guess we'll never know for sure,

It is supposed to be a large rat, but guess they had to substitute the armadillo.  My wife and I laugh every time we see it as it is quite obvious that it is not a rat.

You may be referring to Mark of the Vampire (1935).

Sort of like the shrews in The Killer Shrews (1959).  Obviously dogs with pieces of cloth over them.

  14. Have about decided to sign up for it, but have some questions.  Since I will only be able to view it on my PC, not very appealing, but thought I might try it.  Sitting at PC for 1.5-2 hours is not something I want to do.  Do not have a smart TV and cannot send signals from PC or modem to TV.

Why do I have to subscribe through my cable provider (Spectrum)?  I assume there is no charge.

Am I correct is assuming can only watch on the PC?

    Thanks.

As for the scene;  Bogie does look right into the camera but to me that was his way of show how much contempt Marlowe had for Carmen.    Thanks for posting this since I can never get too much of Martha Vickers (Mickey Rooney's 3rd wife,  with his first being Ava Gardner).

She was known as Martha MacVicar in The Falcon in Mexico.

  16. The Saint series is on and very enjoyable.  At least those with George Sanders.  First one is on now (with Louis Hayward), but not very good.  The Saint in Palm Springs is my favorite.  I think that was last one with Sanders as he moved on to The Falcon Series before his brother, Tom Conway, took that over.

At 5:30 PM, two with Hugh Sinclair are being shown.  Haven't seen these, so do not know about them.
