Oh, that's simple, they were---. . . . hey waaitaminute.

She's obscure, but not that obscure. She's in some films well known to TCM viewers. Oh boy, this may be a tough one.

TCM already has great and crappy theater movies from all times, international, silent, and off-beat movies covered. This represents one as yet unexploited arena. And it can be on Wednesday night. Nothing ever happens on Wednesday night.

The goal, my friend, is not to fool most of the people all of the time, but all of the people for as long as you can.
With that in mind:

Well, you guessed right, but not right away.

The only thing that happens more frequently on these Message Boards than threads going off topic is people complaning about it---which, if you think about it, is no mean feat.

Whew! At least this one won't be guessed right away.

I love Alec Guinness' accent, the way he rounds off his "r"s. And the deep focus.
It's a great pleasure to watch a well-crafted film. To see a plot well constructed, a script well written, the performances professional and polished, with no clumsy over playing or belaboring, just enough emphasis to make the characters stand out and give the movie life.

There are, no doubt, lots of things in the movie to like, and the ending is a real cliffhanger. But overall the movie lacks a certain, what?, cohesiveness, verve. Even the chase sequence, which is so heralded, doesn't have the energy and intensity you would want to see. As I said, it is always entertaining to see Michael Caine work, and Noel Coward plays his part with his customary effortless aplomb.

>I figured the guy to be in a French type film, in the 1930s
That's what prompted me to use the pic. I imagined people getting tangled up guessing all sorts of French actors. You can imagine how demoralizing it was to have someone toss off the name as easy as the date.

No asissts. It's a harsh world. If you don't like it, complain the the authorities.
However, you do provide me with and opening for:

Don't Hold your breath. Are you holding your breath?
MIchael Caine does his usual best, but even he is unable to lift this film above its level.
Nice theme song, though. Lilting, romantic.

TCM often gets caught off guard. They almost missed Elizabeth Taylor. Fortunately, they must have had something already made up for her that could be tacked on to the end of her Remembers segment. It's inconsiderate of people to die at inconvenient times. I agree they should do it in January, but TCM must be doing it in December to match the year-end feeling of nostalgia going on, and that seems to be more important than completeness. That's when all the other reviews and sum-ups are done, anyway. January is the time for beginning, after all, and TCM may not feel it appropriate to be looking back.

Hey, you're not so bad! You guessed her! It's Susannah York. So you see, I don't repeat that soon.

I don't repeat people that soon.

You mean one of thos quirts of the message boards.

Aaaaah! I'm going to sulk for a while.
Oh, yeah. That's her.

You got her, Fred.
Now get her:

Wha-? How? Well, you got him.
I know this will take longer:

Those readers and posters who have an interest can find the origin of the sub-discussion about cars by taking the small effort of paging back and reading through the posts. It arose from another sub-discussion about the movie How to Steal a Million.
It is my belief that sub-discussions arise, in this thread at least, because people have lost interest in it.

Zorro was great! Thanks, TCM!

Oh, stop talking and start guessing:

Cissy Perman: Now, Doc, let's get down to cases. Are you gonna sign up to quit smokin', or not?
Doctor Proctor: Ah, well, as a, uh, a fellow member of the council, Miss Perman, I'm, uh, I'm with this thing in spirit, all the way. But, as a doctor, and a surgeon, my medical opinion is that I'm congenitally unable to, uh, give up smoking. Congenitally, you understand that means there's, uh, there's nothing I can do about it, so, ah, it really doesn't do any, ah, good to kid me, Miss Perman, about foreclosing on my hospital and my X-ray. . . .
Cissy Perman: Who's kiddin'?!
Doctor Proctor: Why, uh, surely you don't mean. . .
Cissy Perman: Now you just sign up or you're gonna be removin' gall stones in your bathtub!
Doctor Proctor: Why Miss Perman, that's blackmail.
Cissy Perman: You say that word again and I'll cry rape! Now you just sign up and get your nervous little body outta here! (Dials) Reverend? The lord's business is done. . . .Now, do I have that plot in the church cemetery?

TV movie series. . . .why not?

>Took me awhile to figure out what you were talking about....MADE for TV movies, right?
Yes, I did mean made-for-TV movies. Naturally, I assumed everyone would know what I was thinking in my head. I didn't think of serials, though. Mmmm, I'd have to consider them. The main reason I suggested TV movies is, indeed, that many stars from the studio era appeared in them at the tail end of their careers. And that a lot of them are good. Or, at least I like 'em. And it isn't from any patronizing desire to relish them in their decrepitude. Their abilities at this point in their careers were honed to their finest. I think it's a great resource to get more of the actors we enjoyed from their earlier work.
