I hereby apologize to all with my constant suggestions to air...that movie. I will never bring it up again. To quote Sgt. Pinback (Dan O' Bannon) of Dark Star fame..."I just won't talk about it anymore!"

*It's great. It's got tragedy and sadness. You have this one great scene where Shirley Booth as housewife Alma Duval begs her youngest son Billy to stay home and watch TV with her rather then his going to the library. It's a great little film. Why won't TCM's programmers schedule it? But the film's highlights are the verbal fireworks that take place between Quinn and Holliman. TCM ought to get cracking and air HOT SPELL.*

*They won't even show HOT SPELL fron 1958 starring Anthony Quinn, Shirley Booth, Eileen Heckart, Earl Holliman and Shirley MacLaine. It's a great deep south potboiler set in New Orleans.*

*filmlover, I must disagree with your summation of my motives. As I have previously stated, TCM has aired HOT SPELL numerous times in past years. There are no torrents for it anywhere that I can find. I saw it listed in a mail-order video catalog years ago and that's it. If I could find a torrent for it then I would not be complaining about it so much. I frankly do not see how it is out of line for me to want TCM to air a movie that they have not shown in at least 8 or 9 years now. No, sir!*

*I very much enjoyed Tuesday nite's Little Rascals marathon as a nice change of pace although the breaks in between the various shorts could have perhaps been a tad more brief. I hereby submit for TCM's consideration and approval a request for a showing of Hot Spell from 1958. A deep south potboiler with Anthony Quinn as an errant husband and Shirley Booth as his loyal dutiful wife. I request the showing of Hot Spell as it was once aired on TCM numerous times...years ago. Not recently that is for sure. If there are no copyright or nitrate deterioration issues pertaining to Hot Spell then I think that TCM should air it again...preferably soon. I yield the floor.*

*My compliments to the chef on tonite's very welcome Little Rascals marathon. I will be watching. I would like to see a 2nd showing of The Comic with Van Dyke and Rooney as well as Hot Spell but tonite's Little Rascals marathon is a good sign. Better.*

You know what is really funny. For about the last 20 years now democrats always make sure they speak respectfully of the military. Even when they're knocking republican policies they're are always careful not to be rhetorically non-supportive of the armed forces. Reagan sure called them on that, didn't he? Everyone from Clinton to Obama has to be careful. I always find that political reality amusing.

An easy enough endeavor, *speaking truth to Hatred.* John Wayne's roles speak to his great patriotism and love of country and it is common knowledge that our troops just love John Wayne movies. His friend James Arness has said that there will never be another John Wayne.and Jim Arness was wounded at Anzio.....anything else?

Then I would ask you, C. Bogle, to justify your remarks by explaining why Wayne was on Stalin's hit list???.....and the threat to Wayne's life very much real until the order was revoked by Khruschev. *Explain that!...if you can.*

Well said, AMC lost their cookies quite some years ago. They started off the decade showing movies uncut without commercials. AMC is no better than Viacom's now awful TV Land, which used to show vintage TV shows.

The Conqueror! Yeah, yeah, I know. It's supposedly awful...but I actually think it's quite good. It's entertainment quotent is certanly underrated. You got this one priceless scene where the Duke rips the dress right off beautiful tartar princess Bortai ( Susan Hayward ) and she replies with a hateful "You mongol dog!' Who would wanna miss that!? Then you have Duke (Temujin) before his mortal enemy and Susan Hayward's father Kumlek. First Duke insults her by referring to her as "Bortai, My wife" right in front of her old man. Then the Duke, bound in chains and yoke, lets out with a hearty indomitable "I regret that I cannot greet you as I would like, Kumlek, *I am bereft of spit!*" But that's the Duke for ya, never down! There is also an earlier priceless scene where Bortai tries to clobber Temijin from behind with a sword after his attempts at romance have failed only to fall in the water which elicits loud guffaws from Temujin's fellow warriors. A priceless comedic scene.

There is nothing phony about the Duke or his politics. People trash Wayne because they know he is the most popular Hollywood icon. He achieved an unprecedented level of stardom without the luxury of starting out as a studio contract player. That one fact alone makes Wayne laudable. Were Cooper, Bogey, Tracy or any of Wayne's other contemporaries on Joseph Stalin's hit list? No. John Wayne is more popular today than ever before!.....especially with our troops! They know the real thing when they see it. Last nite Robert Osborne did mention that Charles Portis, the author of True Grit, had Wayne in mind to play Rooster Cogburn. The left is forever envious and begrudges John Wayne the affection he commands in the hearts of movie lovers everywhere.
I once had a pictorial encyclopedia of all the 20th century's major Hollywood stars. On one page was this quote by Steve McQueen, *"When I want to know how to act tough, I just look at the Duke."*
