  1. Computer generated images have become so "cheap" to do now that people seem to think they can improve on a film that was technically difficult in it's day. Of course, that's what made these films out standing. Look at King Kong for example. (forget the monkey suit fiasco please). Visually stunning but I can't appreciate the computer sequences as much as the "move the ape-take a picture" work involved.
  2. Once heard WC Fields rejected the role of the Wizard in the Wizard of Oz because the salary was too low. Might not have made a difference to him but I think he'd be remembered for it today.
  3. Slightly off topic but the Tony Curtis version of Houdini comes to mind. Not Curtis so much as the writers who got just about everything wrong about Harry's stage life except the spelling of his name. Believe me...NOBODY ever jumped on stage and locked Houdini in a set of cuffs he'd never seen before. There's more but like I said..It's off topic.
  4. Barry Fitzgerald went to Skerry College in Ireland headed for the banking industry. He shared an appartment at one point with playright Sean O'Casey and began acting in his plays. Hitchcock talked him into his first movie "The Plough and the Stars".
  5. Got a totally insane and un-expected gift from my Son last week. Don't know where he found it but it's a colorized version of The Thing From Another World. On disc yet. Had heard this was a big movie in it's day but never expected anyone would color it. Quite well done too. Carrington's hair still looks strange though. His outfit is pretty whack also.
  6. Wether Darrow actually said it or it's just a line from the script: "I have the right to think". I think science offers a more plausable explanation. I think schools should turn students on to both options as opposed to offering one or the other. Of course, steering clear of both eliminates the problem.
  7. My gut feeling is with infinite1. While I don't know Spike Lees involvement with the making of CSA, I do feel it would be better known for the flack that might be associated with it if it was an all white production.
  8. Did I read of a Wizard of Oz re-hash or was it a senior moment? And what about this bit from another thread: some genius is trying to make a Stooge movie? Good God.....could there really be that much money floating around?
  9. All I can say is if she looked great in black and white she must have been a knock out in real life!
  10. Plan 9 is one of those films that's so insanely bad on all counts that it's hilarious. It actually goes beyond the worst film category into some Twilight Zone area. Although I'm a Hanks fan I agree with you on "Ryan". I found the premise unlikely and also thought that (as it actually turned out) Ryan would not leave his company.
  11. My only hope is that Geoffrey Rush gets recognised for King's Speech.
  12. I looked at that poster and the first thing I though was that guy on the right looks like Robert Goulet. That's a joke son.
  13. I caught a showing of "confederate states of america" (notice no caps) recently on a station that advertises itself as "slightly off". People are asking, on other threads why Song of the South isn't shown on TV and yet total garbage like this is allowed. The premise is the south wins the civil war. You can guess the rest of the plot. Billed as a comedy this blantly racist film had me cringeing throughout. In checking it out on the net I found that Spike Lee ( of all people ) was associated with it! I could not believe the content yet couldn't turn it off. I was that amazed at what I was seeing. Something like rubber necking a car accident I suppose. I consider it the worst movie I've ever seen simply on the content.
  14. Sgt. York. Seen it a dozen times. Always get a big laugh at 2 scenes: First is at the hotel after he gets back home. He picks up and looks at an absolutely bizarre photo of Ma. The second is when he gets off the train at home and he and Ma can only stare at each other.
  15. Been thinking about this. Although it wouldn't be the greatist ever one movie gives me the "chokes" every time I watch it. The last 2 minutes of Apollo 13 when those chutes open.
  16. Recently read on a post involving "Born Yesterday": Douglas would have been much better in the part taken by Broderick Crawford because Douglas was the better actor. I never thought of him for that part but he would have been great.
  17. I sometimes fail to catch the humor in movies like this. Especially if I'm watching at home without the audience to cue the laughs. ( too stupid to laugh? )
  18. Don't think that's aimed at education only but all state workers/unions. Cops & Firemen are sometimes not included. Scopes trial was pretty specific in it's aims. Saw a documentary years ago about a college (Wheaton ?) where students requested a course on evolution be included in the curriculum. They got it but some of the parents went nuts. One mother wrote to the school saying she'd rather see her daughter dead than have her question her faith. This renewed my interest in the movie and I tend to keep an eye on the people in the crowds. It still goes on today but with the net and information so available there may be alot more closet evolutionists out there.
  19. I can understand their reaction. It's probably an age/interest thing. Certainly not an "action movie". Still, more raves than pans and I'm still pulling for Geoffrey Rush. Haven't watched in ages so I'll probably find out Monday.
  20. Just got back from a viewing of the Kings Speech. Got to be a new classic. The raves are true. Hope Geoffrey Rush makes out on Sunday night. He deserves it.
  21. Don't know about all the school books. What I read concerned the law banning the teaching of evolution in public schools. I think the ACLU advertised in 3 states for a number of months for some teacher to come forward as a spearhead (or target, if you prefer) and challenge the law.
  22. So this business I heard about Bill Cosby owning the rights to Our gang years ago was just bunk?
  23. No offense taken. But I have to confess that watching "Hanoi Jane" does bother me.
  24. Loved the L & H shorts. Hope their not put back in the vault and forgotten for another year. I think regular showing of these films is a great idea.
  25. Not to argue misswonderly but you did cut off the last part of the sentence in which said I find the film watchable. If I cut out every questionable actor, author, whatever, I would see and hear nothing. No body's perfect. Actors aren't the people they portray but some people think they are. I'm just not one of them.
