The chauffeur becomes a friend and supporter for his employer. Confiding in him, she begins to relax, and is less troubled. Part of this is the simple fact of learning to accept what she can not change. On his side, it progresses to the point of love. That never crosses her mind.

The actress was nearing age 20 at the time of this affair. Her 18th birthday preparations had included going with her mother to a doctor to be fitted with a diaphragm. Her suitor at that time was a well-known composer, divorced, with two children. She became no longer virgin with her family's tacit participation. Her suitor and fellow cast member in the later affair was charming, attentive and generous with gifts such as jewelry. He had a long history as a ladies' man in his native country.

British. A homicide to solve. All the traditional trappings: Amateur sleuths aiding the police. Red herrings. ALL clues are given, but some of them cloaked in misdirection. One of the investigators with a different agenda. All the cliches.

At the time of this affair, the actor was just a couple of years away from bigger roles (both stage and film) and almost world-wide attention for his affair and marrage with a different woman. The young actress was to have a steady-work career as a dependable performer, TV and bigscreen.

Another veteran, less damaged by experiences in combat. A former sergeant, tall and athletic, trim and correct in bearing. Chauffeur for the Lady's family. Also owned some cars, ran a car-hire service. Active in the community -- boxing instructor for the lads in a local club.

Late 1950s. A Broadway play running, a young actor and a younger actress in the cast. Both had film and TV work behind them, and a lot of both ahead of them. Her autobiography describes his seduction of her, pretty much step by step -- including the fact that his wife and two children came to join him when the tryout tour got to New York. A Great Lady of Theatre had the Lead in the stage piece; she didn't approve of the affair. Her parents were more tolerant. Whodat?

A friend of the traumatized veteran, widowed by the war. Referring to her, addressing her, one always led with the word "Lady".

I found it impressive also. Next up. 1950s. B&W. A veteran returns from the American Civil War and finds that his girlfriend is now married to his brother.

One theme: Aftermath of "the Great War". Before "post traumatic stress syndrome" Even prior to "battle fatigue". The "shell shock" era. One of the veterans, aristocrat, battlefield commander, "had a bad war" and confessed to memory loss of some of the things that he experienced and witnessed.

Okay, next up: 1970s. British. Color. Story setting, 1920s. A fascination across the lines of the British class system.

Did they use the term "fifth column" or "fifth columnists"? Etymology: Spanish Civil War. Paraphrase from a General Emilio Mola: "I have four columns of troops marching on Madrid. When the time is right, a fifth column inside the city will rise up and will aid them with the victory." ???
