  1. Thanks, metz. Indeed one of the really good ones. The sequence about Joby's (Jaeckel) death was truly harrowing, in spite of not involving an act of violence. Next up:

Early 1960s. One of several movies marking changing times in the industry: The sliding-out of the Studio system. A major studio, doing a heavy schedule of series television programs. Also putting out bigscreen features in order to use -- and to widen the exposure of -- the series stars on their payroll. I have one title in mind, but there are others that may fit that description. The one at hand involves a headline-grabbing trial that impacts on a political campaign.

    ???

  2. The Link posted by scsu1975 gives a full report on her current situation and location. Her IMDb bio, especially in the 'trvia' section, gives the background. She remains a voting member of the Motion Picture Acadamy of Arts and Sciences. She is the only nun with that destinction.

  3. Yo, cujas;

    Two possibilities:

    1. That's a typo reference to "Mack the Knife" from the *Threepenny Opera.*

    2. It's a reference to 1948's boxoffice flop *The Pirate*, which starred Garland and Kelly. Cole Porter wrote the score, and, with permission, he changed the name of a character to Estramundo, after a friend of his who was nicknamed "Mack the Black."

    ???

  4. At 110 Views, retiring the question. *The Law*, first aired 22 Oct 1974, Was a pilot that was followed by a 4-episode miniseries, that failed to generate a series. Star Judd Hirsch went on to play major roles in Taxi, Delvechio and Numb3rs. The space-cadet walkingwounded client was played by Gary Busey. Both very good performances. Maybe the time was not yet right for such a series.

    Open thread.

  5. 88 Views, no bites. Trying one more clue, working through the stars. The Public Defender has had several series roles, most recently as the benevolent father of two overachieving sons. One son was an FBI Agent; the other was a mathematics whiz who got his Doctorate when very young. The actor in the defendent role recently had a cameo in a sitcom. When a main character was in a loony bin, this guy was the patient in the next bed.

Will retire the question if not answered tonight.

  6. Thanks, finance. I've been planning to bring that one up when I could get an accurate quote on that last line: Sophia says something like, "He's never dead, He always comes back!"

    Next up:

Early '60s. Color. Repeated scenes: A wife points out an attractive woman to her husband and remarks on how beautiful she is. This is followed within hours by the wife tearfully accusing the husband of being in love with the other woman. Adapted from a best-selling novel.

    ???

  7. Close enough, metz. In Songs My Mother Taught Me, Marlon Brando commenting on the making of *Viva Zapata!* The emphasis of this passage was that Brando would have liked to get better acquainted with co-star Anthony Quinn. Quinn, however, was stand-offish, and, to Brando, that traced back to the fact that Zanuck was racist, and Quinn didn't know whom to trust.

Also, my bad, Songs My Mother Taught Me is more properly described as an autobiography than a memoir.

  8. Thanks, skipper. Recently heard on TCM:

  9. re; a 1950s movie...

Do you know me? I wrote this in a memoir:

"(Film name) was produced by (Studio) and until it was a hit ______ _. ______, who ran the studio, was lukewarm about it. An obsurd-looking man, ______ bore a striking resemblance to Bugs Bunny; when he entered a room, his teeth preceded him by about three seconds. He also had a tremendously inflated opinion of himself; he considered himself larger than life, was totally self-absorbed, was cruel to many of the people who worked for him and always had a new bimbo in tow."

Uh, thanks. My informed decision is that I won't waste my time trying to be permanently rid of these gnats. They use up some of my time, but they rarely make any money off of me. I know how to delete.
