  1. Sam "Momo" Giancana. Phyllis McGuire of the McGuire Sisters. and the straight man of the Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In duo. On the "no official confirmation" front, slips of info on these matters can be found in the Wikipedia sites of Giancana and Rowen. An effort to tell this story with some accuracy can be found in the TV Movie Sugartime, which make use of the title of the McGuire Sisters' biggest hit.

  2. Thanks, Miles. Trying one.

Do you know me? Born in the 1920s, grew up in time for WWII service in the Army Air Force. Credited with shooting down two Japanese fighters. Short of an Ace, but still -- two down. Got shot down myself, recovered from injuries, was discharged. // Went into show business via standup comedy. Joined up with a comedy partner; we did well on the nightclub circuit, wound up doing a lot of work in Las Vegas. // Married, divorced, remarried. My partner and I made two attempts at making movies; did not work out well. // Had an affair with a highly popular singer. //

Events take off into some "can not be officially confirmed" territory here. My lady friend had another admirer who had a uh, had a Family. This figure was resentful of my presence in her life, and supposedly my life was threatened. // This person was approached by Federal authorities who asked his help in dealing with some matters in Castro's Cuba. Supposedly he asked them to bug the singer's dressing room to get information about her relationship with me. // My partner and I got into series television with a comedy-variety show that had a good and popular five-year run.

The alleged Organized Crime figure had various conflicts within his Family, and with the Feds, and with his contacts in Cuba. At one time he was in a sort of exile in Mexico. At another he was in Federal custody for refusing to give testimony before a Senate committee. When he was out and moving around freely, he was often in the company of the singer. When he was abroad or in custody, she was often with me. He died in his apartment while standing at his stove and cooking, supposedly at the hands of someone he trusted.

Our TV run ended, I worked on some other projects, then went into a comfortable retirement, in the US and abroad. I was a Type II diabetic, and I made some Public Service announcements about the disease. My death came about due to complications from the condition.

Who am I. Who are these other people?

  3. Take it, Miles. I focused on that question only because it reminded me of a pattern I had notice some decades ago. The WWII years produced some film-series tangents that generated anti-Axis plots.

Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, the Dead End Kids, the Bowery Boys and other such staple potboilers got into the anti-Nazi pattern at some point. I had not been aware of the Western slant. I believe that German Shepherd named "Rusty" also annoyed the Fuhrer a couple of times.

Miles' thread, to use or open.

  4. The only problem here is too many definite articles. Simply Trouble In Mind will serve for the title. And you know, it never crossed my mind to track down Divine's real name, that persona was so well established. Completely covered. Your thread.

  5. There's a serial called King of the Texas Rangers, (1941). It ran an anti-Nazi plot, but I found nothing fitting the rest of your description. Didn't seem to involve Melburn Stone, either. Is this anywhere near what you refer to?

  6. The actress -- Ula Holt ?

Tarzan -- Shot Putter Bruce Bennett* ? The Green Goddess and The New Adventures of Tarzan ?

*...I spent some time looking for another Olympic swimmer, like unto Weissmuller and Crabbe.
