It is indeed an American story. The "kingship" involved is territorial. It covers "New York and Eastern Pennsylvania", although there are others in that community who dispute that title. It involves a culture that was imported from abroad, and it has been compared to that body of tales involving --The Maf-- organized crime "families". It involves excellent ensemble acting, and some very familiar American performers in the cast. The mother's "tell you a story" passage was a deliberately planted clue.

"You were very good today. You're going to be special, like your grandfather. That's it, you eat this, and I'll tell you a story. When the good Jesus was on the cross, the Roman soldiers had four nails, one big one for the heart. But a Gypsy guy was there, and he stole the one for the heart. The soldiers were looking all over for it, but Jesus could see what they could not -- that the Gypsy guy had it. So from that day on, Jesus promised the Gypsies they could roam the world and steal what they want."

Young man and young woman, on an impulse, adopt a cute puppy from an animal shelter. Then they shoot up, as is their custom. The pup is last seen going under in the churning wake of the Stanton Island ferry.

The old King, on his deathbed, gives the young man a ring and a medallion, representing authority among these people. The young man, still reluctant, tries to hand them to his father, who would be insulted to accept them under these conditions. The young man finds out that his sister has been sold to another family -- for marriage -- for $6000. He threatens to report this to the police. Among this tribe, it is unthinkable to bring the police into anything.
