Agreed; a very good film, and a favorite of mine. Thread open. -- Would like to encourage more participation on this thread.

Young man and young woman, on an impulse, adopt a cute puppy from an animal shelter. Then they shoot up, as is their custom. The pup is last seen going under in the churning wake of the Stanton Island ferry.
-
The old King, on his deathbed, gives the young man a ring and a medallion, representing authority among these people. The young man, still reluctant, tries to hand them to his father, who would be insulted to accept them under these conditions. The young man finds out that his sister has been sold to another family -- for marriage -- for $6000. He threatens to report this to the police. Among this tribe, it is unthinkable to bring the police into anything.

The old King's son -- and father of the designated future king -- is resentful and rebellious. He sells his young daughter to a member of the community to stabilize his own financial status. (This daughter -- a rising young beauty, early in her career.)

The young man does not really want the responsibilities about to descend on him. He is in love with a girl outside his closed culture, and he would like to live and function in the larger society. The problem is that his own father -- who was passed over -- would be a disaster at the job. The father moved to sell the lad's sister, barely in her teens, to help cope with his (the father's) debts.

Culture clash. The women of the subculture, as is their custom, gather around, crowding the sickroom, refusing to exit as the hospital personnel have tried to get them to do. The death of the old King will mean the rise of the new one.
