I highly recommend anyone unfamiliar with Russian history to check out this site:

It's a scene-by-scene guide to what's going on in the movie, as the film itself doesn't really tell you who the historical figures are. I knew very little Russian history when I first saw this, and the guide made it all the more enjoyable.

If they wanted to show a "modern" Christmas classic, why not "Home Alone" or "Christmas Vacation"? They're more classic than "The Holiday".
