  1. Gosh, Johnny, I've probably had that movie 10 years or so! I think I hit the "record" button one night and it kept on recording and I caught BEAUTY FOR SALE and another of my favorite pre-codes, UNDER EIGHTEEN. I was absolutely thrilled.

If it really did play recently, I hope everyone got a chance to see it. I love the scene in the rainstorm where Madge Evans gets frightened of the thunder and deliciously jumps into Kruger's arms. It doesn't get more romantic than that!

  2. Mongo, want to thank you for the information Rian James. Although you said there wasn't much out there, you found more than I did! I've been busy & away from the TCM site for awhile, and just got back.

Also...if I ever get to NYC, I must have a real Nathans! They sell a packaged version in supermarkets here in the midwest, but I fancy it is NOT quite the same. I myself prefer mustard, onions & relish.

  3. Does anyone know if this has ever aired, on any station? Who owns the rights to this one? It was pretty hot back in the 1930's, is it still too hot to air today, or is there some type of "Letty Lynton" legality issue that prevents it from being shown.

I love Miriam Hopkins, and would love to see this one. I've seen snippets, and it looks awesome.

Any of you seen it, and want to comment on it??

  4. I agree with whoever said there were many stars of Paramount, Universal etc, who are virtually unknown today because their movies are not released either to TV or video/dvd.

I'd love to discover Nancy Carroll and see some the early 1930's Paramounts with names like "Hot Saturday" and "Kiss and Make Up." I'd also like to see more of Cary Grant's early work.

    Ah, if only.

  5. I love Cagney! Here are a couple of my favorites, because there was no way to limit them to just one!

**Blonde Crazy** is a wonderful pre-Code with Joan Blondell as his costar! You just have to hear him say, "hooooonnnnneeey!" in this one.

**Footlight Parade** is a yummy Busby Berkley with Cagney in the lead.

**Hard to Handle** is a wonderful one with him as a scam artist.

Actually, any of his pre-Codes are great. I even like his first film, Sinners Holiday, as it shows how good he was, even in the beginning (Joan Blondell is also pretty darn good here too).

  6. I realize this may take some time, so I'll be patient. I was wondering if you had any information on writer Rian James? The imdb doesn't list anything except birth & death. I've watched several pre-codes lately that he wrote, and I was just curious about his life. He seemed to really have a finger on the pre-code era & lifestyle.

Have a great time at Coney Island. What does a NYer put on a Nathans? Mustard? Onions? Relish? Or is there no specific way to eat 'em? Just wondering about that, too. Remember, one of Clara Bow's first jobs as a teen was slicing the buns there!

  7. I have to also vote for SHOP AROUND THE CORNER for the exact same reason as someone else--he was incredibly sexy.

I also liked him in a very small 1936 role, WIFE VS. SECRETARY. He played Jean Harlow's young boyfriend. He said that in one scene, he had to "make out" with beautiful Jean, and they had to do take after take! He said he was very embarassed, but Jean, was very nice!

  8. I will be on the lookout for this one! Gary Cooper is a wonderful actor.

What did you (or others) think of BERKLEY SQUARE? I thought it was a huge downer of a film. Am I the only one? Was it big at the time of it's release? I've read it was one of the first "time travel" themed movies released.

  9. I got curious and check the internet movie data base (imdb.com) for UPSTAGE, and there's not a lot of info there--no synopsis--but it shows five people have seen it, and rated it 5.1 out of 10. That would put her age at about 23, which looks about right to me, based on the film clip.

Please continue to check! I also searched the TCM library, and they do have this in their vaults. How about having an up & coming composer put some music to it, and let's see it! It looks intriguing.

  10. WOW~! Joel & Connie were a hot couple. I've seen a lot of these two stars' movies, but I'm looking forward to ROCKABYE & KEPT HUSBANDS. I see KEPT HUSBANDS has the pre-Code-a-licious Dorothy Mackaill.

You know, I get excited to see 2 days of pre-Codes like this, but wish that they would pick a time slot (okay, choose the 1 - 5:00 am time slots) and just show them! Any of them--ones I've never seen!! It's said that yeah, they show them, but so often they are pics that have played many times.
