  1. I'd like to have been on these sets: 1) Tara & Twelve Oaks in GWTW. 2) The big mansion in WHITE ZOMBIE. 3) Warren William's penthouse in UNDER EIGHTEEN. (It is an Art Deco delight!)
  2. I was prepared for bad news--and not surprised. I figured that both films were lost causes, and as nitrite film decomposes, the chances move from "slim" to "none." I've been away from the boards for a long time, but I enjoyed reading your "Ask Mongo" column. You know a lot and it's nice to share what you know with the rest of us. Take care. Alix
  3. Wasn't she the beautiful student nurse who gets pregnant by Clark Gable in "Men in White (1933)?"
  4. Hello Mongo! What do you think the chances of finding a copy (any quality or number of reels) of "Convention City are?" Also, do you think "London at Midnight" exists? I don't mean the TCM still picture movie, but the real thing. Do you think the "hype" surrounding these two movies makes the greater than they probably are/were? Thanks! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
  5. I just watched "The Mouthpiece," and boy was it good. As always, Warren William is fabulous. He is one of my all time favorites of the 1930's. Anyone else like that one?
  6. Another sad character is Catherine in "The Heiress."
  7. Wizard of Oz was probably first. Those flying monkeys and the green faced witch scared me as a kid--as did Elvira Gulch.
  8. Add my vote for Aline MacMahon & "Heat Lightning." It is about 65 minutes long, but every minute counts. I caught it on video YEARS ago, and have never seen it since--and I don't know why!
  9. I do not think musical numbers are the same as music videos. They were never intended as a "stand alone" song & dance clip. Gregelektric, I would imagine that being a fan of movies made between 1980 and 1989, TCM would be a bit of a downer for you, as they do not focus on your type of films. Happily for you, there is the AMC, FMC, IFC, and of course HBO, Showtime and Cinemax. How fortunate for those of us who do watch movies from 1920-1950 that TCM is able to program movies we enjoy!
  10. I know this rightly belongs in the genre folder, but heck, no one visits there anymore! What do you all think of JUDEX? I applaud TCM for showing a serial! I hope they'll dig a bit and show more. Any thoughts, friends?
  11. BOO! If you were allowed to program the movies on Halloween night (say from 6:00 pm to 1:00 am), what would you show and why??
  12. I like the silent MGM logo, where the lion roars, but we can't hear it. My all time favorite is the Universal logo (circa 1930) where the plane circles around the spinning earth. I also like Columbia studio's lady with the sparkler (also circa 1930). I always thought she looked so patriotic, with that huge sparkler in her hand!
  13. I've seen several posters comment that they have rented movies via Netflix. I've seen pop-ups about Netflix, but honestly haven't checked into it. Could someone who's used the service explain how it works, and whether or not it's a good way to rent movies? I find it practically impossible to rent a classic movie I haven't seen at Blockbuster!
  14. If you like to read, there are quite a few excellent books about the pre-Code era. DANGEROUS MEN, and COMPLICATED WOMEN are two of the best. Also, SIN IN SOFT FOCUS is excellent, and has a great filmography of pre-Codes in the back of the book. I learned a lot about the era, and the behind-the-scenes stuff from reading.
  15. I want to see a really lost film...CONVENTION CITY, the nastiest of all pre-Codes. How sad a copy has yet to turn up. I still cherish the hope that someday, this truely lost film will resurface and I'll get a chance to view it.
  16. I would have to say Nazomiva. Back then, her name said it all!
  17. I know TCM sometimes purchases rights to show movies from other companies, but FOX is not one I've seen movies from! Of course, they now have their FMC and periodically prance out a nugget from their vaults (I saw DELICIOUS, JUST IMAGINE, and CALL HER SAVAGE) but I guess they don't quite see the marketability of showing their films. Or perhaps they have simply fallen into disrepair. I'd love to see TCM negotiate the rights for some of Cary Grant's early Paramounts, as well as Clara Bow's.
  18. Did my eyes decieve me, or did I see COUNSELLOR AT LAW with John Barrymore & Bebe Daniels on the schedule coming up this winter? I have heard this is an excellent film, but haven't seen it because it is not an MGM or RKO movie, and isn't released on DVD or video. Can anyone enlighten me? My assumption is that MGM has purchased the viewing rights...?
  19. OOOPS! Something happened while typing the post below! This should have been on the Jean Harlow thread! Sorry! I'm not sure how it ended up here! BTW...I don't like A FACE IN THE CROWD.
  20. Besides her...physical charms, don't forget what a wonderful light comedienne she became. Many of my favorite movie lines were spoken by Jean Harlow. Case in point, from RED HEADED WOMAN: Jean (wearing a dress without a slip): Can you see through this? Salesgirl: I'm afraid you can, miss. Jean: Well, I'll take it. I got a tremendous kick out of her in DINNER AT EIGHT, playing opposite Wallace Beery. Her "Kitty Packard" was great. I love the way she baby talks him into going to the party: Jean: Dan-ny? Kitty wants to go to see all the Lords and Ladies in the big foo-foo house! No one could turn on the fake sugar like Jean.
  21. I love THREE ON A MATCH, but don't know if it qualifies as a B-movie, with Bette Davis, Ann Dvorak, Joan Blondell & the delicious Warren William!
  22. I still think Gable is your best, most famous bet.
  23. Thanks for the info on the graveyard scene in ARSENIC & OLD LACE. I do have a copy, and will try the freeze-frame approach. I had heard it was there, and thought it was funny, but I never had caught it when I watched it.
  24. I think Thornhill was asking the other guy if he knew his initials spelled "R.O.T."
  25. I'd even like TCM to show B movies from the 1930's as well. They don't have to be top quality (of course, a B movie usually wasn't) Variety is the spice of life and I for one would appreciate some new movies being shown.
