Have you ever considered teaching a course on the subject, assuming that there is such a thing (obviously, a course strictly for adults). I will definitely check out the link. Yes, my friend was a very nice person, but also rather naive. I was reminded of that when you referred to the fact that sometimes these people don't realize the forces with which they are dealing. With your description of how a headless chicken is treated, it's no wonder that I recall her saying that they had to spread newspapers all over the floor of the hotel room in which they performed the blood sacrifice. Naive or not, my friend had more personal integrity than many others I've known. Months after I had lost all contact with her and had no idea where she had gone, she sent a sizeable amount of money she owed me (which couldn't have been all that easy for her financially either). I've continued to hold her in high regard for that last act of friendship.

Well, Thelma Todd, I want to thank you for the education that this discussion has provided for me, regarding the paranormal and its many permutations. I'm not saying anything against my friend, with whom I got along well, though the news of the animal sacrifice at the time clearly disgusted me and took me by surprise. And even if she was into "obeah," as you call it, in no way could I envision her trying to do me any harm. When we parted, we parted as friends, thus she tried contacting me a few years ago. Nor do I know exactly what, now, to make of those visitations or dreams that I had years ago. But you have certainly given me a lot of new information, thus much to ponder. And I rather suspect, as well, that this thread has been a learning experience for more than a few other readers, as well.

It's interesting, clore, that old timer Bogart and "new face" Brando had two square offs with one another in the Oscar derby, splitting the awards. Brando was a heavy favourite, I believe, to win in '51 for Streetcar Named Desire when Bogie pulled an upset win by getting the Oscar for African Queen. Three years later they were among the competitors again, this time with Brando victorious for On the Waterfront, beating out Bogart in Caine Mutiny. Thanks again, Thelma Todd, for your analysis. Well, the speculation that my experiences may have been something other than just nightmares does make them more interesting to reflect upon, I suppose. I say that rather flippantly and with the reassurance that they have been over for so many years now. Those visitations, whether in a dream or from the spirit world, are the only times in my life in which I felt completely physically immobilized. I felt as if I could not move a muscle and was completely vulnerable for whatever the visitor chose to do - which, as it turned out, was stare at me without saying anything. I distinctly remember, as I was in that half awake, half asleep state, struggling to open my eyes wide and being incapable of doing so. As for my friend, and her ceremony sacrificing some poor chicken, she never really talked to me about it much. But, obviously, with her Trinidadian culture, it was something that she took in her stride. I remember how when I protested to her about the cruelty of taking the bird's life for a ceremony, she laughed it off and said, "Oh, Tom, it could have been a goat." I assume that means that goats are another animal that face sacrifices during voodoo ceremonies. My friend, by the way, never once said the word "voodoo." It's a word that I've been flashing around during this conversation, assuming that's what it was all about. By the way, I never thought I was "crazy." I just thought I was having a doozy of a series of repetitive nightmares (and lasting about two years off and on it got pretty rough, at times, as I'm sure you can well imagine).

Well, Thelma Todd, I didn't know that ghosts will also attach themselves to people. Again, I really don't know if my visitation experiences were dreams (which cold blooded logic would tell me they must have been) or a series of paranormal events (the possibility of which I don't dismiss). As for the two lady friends, the one who saw ghosts all her life, including through mirrors, as well as the one who may have been indulging in voodoo, I haven't seen either one since 1995. It seems to me that my nightmare/ghostly visitor/whatever-it-was events took place at least 15 years ago, possibly a little more. So the time line with my acquaintance with the two ladies may, indeed, coincidence or not, overlap. A little bit spooky, if you pardon the expression. Makes me sort of glad that I didn't followup a couple of years ago when one of them (the one possibly into voodoo) got her telephone number to me through a common acquaintance. She now lives in New York City and, from all that I heard about her, is doing well. Speaking of ghosts and Pickfair, which got us on this topic in the first place, according to various internet sources, hauntings at the home were sighted long before Pia Zadora got the property. Even Buddy Rogers, who was married to Mary Pickford for the last 42 years of her life, apparently reported seeing a phantom lady in white in the house after Mary's passing which he thought was Mary. But Pickford herself was concerned about the place when they lived there with Fairbanks, if the following report is to be believed. I know that some will regard this You Tube clip as a bit tacky, perhaps, but I simply loved this Diet Coke commercial when it played on television so long, long ago, in 1992. Now that I think about it, I had met the lady who had seen ghosts all her life, including in mirrors, though my other friend who had performed the animal sacrifice. So they were both around the same time as my dreams or visitations. I haven't seen either lady in over 15 years now. But, in any event, the experiences are now ancient history. At the time it never occured to me that they could have been anything other than dreams. Thanks, Thelma Todd, for trying to give those visitations, dreams or otherwise, an appraisal.

Thelma Todd, I occasionally have what you called lucid dreams. I will be very aware of the fact that I'm having a dream while having it and can, to a limited degree, even have a little bit of control of activities within that dream. As far as the series of dream visitations from years ago are concerned, I am still in the same bedroom today and, therefore, yes, they were in the same house as the suicide from 1958 or '59. As for your other questions, however, I'm afraid I have no answers. The dreams or paranormal visits, whichever they were, occured, I suspect, in the mid to late 1990s, my having turned 40 around then, and I can't think of anything happening at that particular time to cause the experiences to either start or, most thankfully, stop. There was no particular pattern, from what I can recall, to their occurence, perhaps once every few weeks or so. I know it did happen a lot, though, for a prolonged period of time. I'm guessing when I say two years, but that sounds about right. I don't collect antiques, unless you count movie posters as such and those I had had since the '60s and '70s (still have them). It would have been around the time of the nightmares that I did acquire an autograph album from an antique store, full of signatures of famous stars of stage and screen from the early '30s. I still have that album in my bedroom today, though. That's about it for "antiques." No, I never participated in occult practices of any kind. It was around the same period of time, though, that I did have a friend who, though I didn't press her on the issue, may have indulged in some kind of variations on voodoo. She was from Trinidad and told me of having recently participated in a ceremony that involved sacrificing a chicken in a hotel room, much to my horror at the time. She didn't go into details beyond that. Yes, I'm very aware that I was lucky that these dreams or visitations stopped. Even if they were just nightmares, they were far too vivid for my comfort. After all these years I still recall them so well. I rather suspect I always will.

Thanks, Eugenia. I have to say that I have never had such a repetitive series of a variation on the same dream in my life. I must have had these terrifying experiences for at least two years before they finally stopped (ten to fifteen years ago)! It does make me wonder a bit if they were just nightmares. But to suggest they they were something other than that would have more than a few people wondering about me, I know.

Well, I wasn't going to mention this but since the subject of dreams has come up I guess I will now. For a number of years I had variations on the same dream in which a vague transparent being would walk through my bedroom wall as I lay asleep in bed and either stand by the bed looking down at me or sit on the edge of my bed. I always had these dreams, it seemed, when I was in a half asleep, half awake state, and I was terrified because I was completely immobilized and could do nothing, and these experiences seemed so extraordinarily realistic. The being never did anything except stare at me before he (and it did seem to be a he) disappeared. I haven't had a repeat of any of these horrible experiences in many years now, and have always dismissed them as horrible nightmares. I still assume they were just that. However, my friend's comments about perceptions of two different entities in my home have sometimes made me question if what I repeatedly went through for a couple of years actually was a dream. As long as I never experience it again, I'll be happy.

Max Baer's Buddy Brannen character in The Harder They Fall (based, by extension, upon his own real role in Carnera's life story), is portrayed by Maxsie as hard boiled and vicious. I haven't seen Cinderella Man but it sounds like the film about Jim Braddock, the man who took the crown from Baer, picked up where this portrait left off. The real Baer, of course, had a reputation as a fun loving playboy clown. After taking the championship from Carnera and visiting him in the hospital after the fight, Baer found that they couldn't find a bed long enough for the towering Italian, and was amused to find that Carnera's feet were sticking out at the end of the bed. Thelma Todd, once again, I would like to thank you for these discussions about the paranormal. Your informed and highly intelligent, even scientific, descriptions of possible occurences of the unexplained, along with advice to parents should their children shows signs of an encounter, is really performing an invaluable service - for those who believe or, at least, have an open mind on the subject. It would be great if others chose to share some of their experiences but, if not, I understand that, as well. There may be a lot of them reading this thread, as well as, of course, those that are cynical. Believe me when I say that I more than understand the feelings of the latter since up until, say, 15 or 20 years ago, I was firmly ensconced within their group. Now, I regard myself as open to the possibility of a hereafter. As for my friend, and her encounter as a little girl (along with her sister) with Sadie, she had no fear of any kind during those experiences at the time. The conversations with Sadie (she forgets what they actually discussed) must have been about common every day things. She has no memory of any instructions or messages being given to her. As for her grandmother's reaction to the encounters, it's apparent that she already believed in a spirit world. It was only after my friend's conversation with her grandmother about it that she became afraid over the possiblity of having spoken to a ghost. Today, however, having perceived some kind of presence in my own home, she was very casual about it, mentioning it to me in a nonchalant manner. At first, quite frankly, I was amused when she told me. When she said she saw an entity in the room of a suicide 60 years ago, however, I marvelled at the "coincidence." I think that Bogie went out with a really strong picture in The Harder They Fall (one of his better films of the '50s, in fact), and a film that still has an impact today as a statement upon the corruption and exploitation to be found in the fight racket. (Hello, Don King, are you reading this?). The Budd Shulberg novel for this film adaption was based on the true life story of a giant Italian import backed by the mob, Primo Carnera, who became heavyweight champion in 1933. He became transformed in the film's screenplay into Argentine Toro Moreno, as played by huge Mike Lane. Interestingly, the role of Buddy Brannen, the vindinctive hard hitting opponent who beats hell out of Toro in the film's realistically depicted final fight sequence, was played by former boxer Max Baer. This was the same fighter who had actually knocked out the real Carnera to take the championship from him in 1934! That's two times then, both real and reel, in which Baer would be victorious. By the way, once in a while TCM plays a 1933 MGM feature called The Prizefighter and the Lady, starring Myrna Loy. This film stars a young Max Baer in the lead (Max was very popular at the time and had a lot of personality). Well, the real Primo Carnera also appears in this film (along with a few other former heavyweight champs). The film climaxes with Baer and Carnera having a movie fight for the championship just a few months before they did the same thing for real in the boxing ring. You have to wonder how much these two men were trying to psyche one another on the MGM movie set since they knew that the real showdown between them was not far away, with Carnera putting his championship on the line. As for post-Harder They Fall Bogart, there was talk of him appearing with Bacall in a comedy, Melville Goodwin, USA. In fact, there was a wardrobe test done for it at Warner Brothers. Outside of the possiblity of a home movie, I believe that this may well be the last time that Bogart was ever recorded on film: You can see Bogie and Bacall joking around about their heights (she's in high heels and as tall as him). The comedy would later be made as Top Secret Affair, with Kirk Douglas and Susan Hayward. And, yes, mrroberts, it's well documented that Bogart was extraordinarily courageous in those final months, as the cancer was increasingly turning the actor into a skeletal figure. He would still entertain old friends and guests in his home (people like Sinatra and Judy Garland), with whom, of course, he shared drinks. Towards the very end, as he became increasingly weakened, Bogart would be lowered into the living quarters in a wheelchair through a dumb waiter. It's my understanding that the cancer itself was never discussed, that the emphasis would be upon anecdotes or good times. Bogart showed remarkable grace under pressure. There are some stories about the very end. Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn visited Bogie the day before he died. According to Hepburn as they were about to depart, "He (Bogie) looked up at Spencer with the most rueful smile and said 'Goodbye, Spence,' and you could tell that he meant it. He'd always said 'Good night' before. When we went downstairs Spence looked at me and said, 'Bogie's going to die.'" Bogart's final words were spoken to Lauren Bacall when she was about to briefly depart to pick up their children from Sunday school. Depending upon your source, those words were either "Goodbye, kid" or "Goodbye, kid. Hurry back." By the time she returned the actor had slipped into a final coma. I had no idea that my friend's anecdote about seeing entities in the mirror was a common occurence for those who can see ghosts. A final anecdote for you, this from the friend who said she has perceived entities (two different ones, in fact, she told me) in my house. She said that as a 6 year old girl living on her grandmother's farm both she and her younger sister frequently spotted an elderly couple at the edge of their property. The man would remain by the street but the lady would come on their property and talk to the two girls. The woman identified herself as Sadie, talking to them on a number of occasions. (My friend can't remember the man's name but I don't think he ever said anything). The only thing that the two little girls ever noticed that was peculiar about this couple was that they both wore old fashioned clothing from an earlier time. My friend didn't describe the clothing but said she had never seen anyone else wearing it. Later the two sisters came across a photo album in their grandmother's house and, while thumbing through the pictures, came across a photo of the woman in the old fashioned clothing to whom they had spoken. They immediately ran to their grandmother with the picture, asking her about the woman. Their grandmother identified the woman as "Sadie," an aunt who had died many years before. They then told their grandmother about their encounters with Sadie and the man (an uncle, I suspect) and their grandmother had no doubt that they had seen two spirits. My friend has no memory as to whether she saw Sadie and the uncle again after this conversation. A couple of years ago, however, while talking to her sister on the phone, the sister spontaneously asked her, "Do you remember Sadie?" and the two of them excitedly relived their shared experience. My friend says that she has seen no ghosts since her childhood. Her perceptive of some kind of entities in my home, while clearly paranormal, is not the same kind of experience that she had as a child. But her childhood tale is of actually having a conversation with what appeared to be a solid being, rather than a ghost-like apparition. I have no idea how common this may be. I have to be honest here, and add that my friend does have a very large imagination but not so large that a sister can relive the same experience with her!

Thelma Todd, with your own paranoramal experiences, it's no wonder you have made such an extensive exploration of this fascinating subject. I had a friend who confided to me, one day, that she had always had the ability to see ghosts. And it's an ability that she dearly wished that she didn't have! As a little girl she would quite casually notice "people" occasionally walking by that looked diffferent from the rest of us. This conversation was, unfortunately, so many years ago that I can't recall how she described these spirits so that she knew that they were different. What I do recall her telling me, though, was that initially she thought everybody could see these people-like apparitions. When she found out that others couldn't see them, however, she became frightened and was afraid that she had a psychological disorder. She became very quiet about the spirits and wouldn't tell anyone anything about them. As time passed, however, she started to learn about the paranormal and realized that she had this "gift" of seeing dead people (sounds like a line out of The Sixth Sense, doesn't it?) and there was nothing she could do about it. She made reference, in particular, to the fact that sometimes she would be looking into a mirror of a change room of company where she worked and see a spirit walk behind her. She particularly recalled a time when a group of her girlfriends were sitting at as table discussing the recent death of a co-worker in an automobile accident. My friend said that as they were having this conversation, she could see the spirit of that female co-worker, just killed, sitting at the table with them. The one thing I can categorically state is that this friend, which whom I lost contact many years ago, was completely sincere in what she told me. She was not the kind of person to joke around much, and she felt comfortable enough with me to open up about it in a manner that she wouldn't with many others. Whether she was delusional is another matter but I certainly never detected any signs of anything being peculiar about her personality. Quite the opposite. She was such a down to earth person that I found her paranormal experiences to be fascinating conversations. I only wish I could have had more of them.

Having had conversations with a couple of people who have told me of ghostly sightings, and with a few interesting moments having also occured in my home which may or may not involve a ghost or partial entity (I've never seen it, but a friend of mine claims she has, several times - in, coincidence or not, a room in which the suicide of a 17-year-old boy had once occured). What added to the eeriness was the fact that I had never told my friend of the suicide. I suppose that I have to say that I sit firmly on the fence now when it comes to the topic of the hereafter. Thelma Todd, thanks very much for the loving effort you put into providing some of the history of Pickfair, along with those lovely photographs and the link to the My Love of Old Hollywood website. In those two aerial views of Pickfair before and since the demolition, at least it reveals that the kidney shaped swimming pool is still in existence. I hadn't heard Pia Zadora's ghost story explanation for her much criticized demolition of a piece of Hollywood history. It brings to mind that there are a quite a few tales of haunted Hollywood. Singer Rickey Nelson and his family, who moved into Errol Flynn's Mulholland Farm home which the famed movie swashbuckler had had built in 1942 (a site of near-legendary bacchanal activities during the 1940s) also had ghostly sightings on the premises as well. Even more bizarre were TWO (!) occasions in which it sounded like the contents of a locked room were being trashed by someone (burglers?), only to find the room virtually untouched when family eventually, cautiously investigated it after the crashing sounds had ended. Nelson, a huge Flynn fan, seemed to take it all in his stride, though others were clearly more concerned. Nelson's family eventually moved out of the place after Ricky's death. The family that lived in the home prior to Nelson had no ghostly experiences. There was, however, one strange day in which all the pipes in the house violently shook for a minute. That strange structure-wide vibration never occured again. Coincidence or not, the date of that strange, unexplained occurence was October 14, 1959, the same day Errol Flynn died. Please pardon the brief digression in topic from the ghosts of the home of the most legendary silent swashbuckler to those of the home of the movie famous talkie swashbuckler.

Cheesy, shlocky, campy. You can take your pick as to which word best describes this mild little relic from the '60s, an amalgamation of western and horror film, which TCM broadcast last weekend. Directed by William "One Shot" Beaudine, written by Carl Hittleman and produced by Carroll Case, these three would also be responsible for a similar grindhouse quickie, Jesse James Meets Frankenstein's Daughter, also shown last weekend by TCM. I haven't had the pleasure, if that is quite the right word to use, in viewing this second one yet. Those two must have been some kind of double bill back in their day, the theaters and drive-ins populated, I assume, primarily by kids and teens looking for a laugh. The Dracula character, curiously, is never actually referred to by that name in his encounter with Billy, merely as "the vampire." Wholesome, clean cut Billy the Kid is the hero of the film (not the most accurate film portrait of this western character, as if you expected it to be), seeking to rescue his girlfriend from the clutches of the vampire, though it takes him a while to be convinced that she actually is in danger. The vampire, by the way, while impervious to Billy's bullets, proves to be not quite so adept at avoiding disaster when the cowboy tosses his empty gun at him. He crumples like a straw man when struck in the face. Now that is one wimpy Dracula! What am I doing? I'm actually describing part of the dumb plot, as if anyone actually cares. Seeing Billy the Kid Vs Dracula may also elicit a "poor John Carradine" response from some TCM viewers over the fact that the acting status of this character actor (who had once been a part of John Ford's stock company) had so declined by the '60s that he had to appear in a clunker like this. Mind you, back in the '40s, when Carradine first played Dracula in Universal's House of Frankenstein and House of Dracula, that also probably produced a lot of "poor John Carradine" comments from viewers and former co-stars, as well. But now, at least, those two Universal "B"s look positively artistic next to this silly little outing. But as far back as twenty years before this Billy the Kid affair the same actor was also appearing in other "B" horror efforts, as well. (The irony being, of course, that there is still a large cult following for those little cheap efforts, with a fair size crowd probably more interested in watching Carradine play Dracula or appear in Voodoo Man than see him as "Preacher" Casey in Ford's Grapes of Wrath). But an actor's got to do what an actor's got to do, particularly if he is no longer in hot demand. By the '60s there were a lot of actors (former major A players of the studio system days) forced to appear in film projects that they might not want to appear at the top of their movie resumes. A lot of them were filmed in Europe, little seen in America. Actors like Stewart Granger and Alan Ladd were travelling across the Atlantic to pick up what film scraps they could get in Italy or Spain or wherever. Errol Flynn, once a HUGE star, appeared in a miserable embarassing little grade Z effort, Cuban Rebel Girls, turning out to be his final film, made at a time when his personal lifestyle and box office failures had combined to make the former film Robin Hood virtually unemployable. In fact, I can't think of a more profound case of a big star fallen on miserable, hard times than Flynn with Cuban Rebel Girls (It may well be the worst film ever made by such a legendary Hollywood performer). But I'm sure there must have been a few others than can be cited, as well. Can anyone think of a worse case? At that, perhaps Billy the Kid Vs Dracula, relatively speaking, isn't quite so bad. After all, nobody's expecting anything of quality from a film of this nature anyway, as opposed to watching the sad sight of formerly large Hollywood stars forced to pick up a pay cheque doing films that they wouldn't want their own families to see. Yes, mrroberts, that Twilight Zone in which Duryea appeared, Mr. Denton on Doomsday, was only the third episode of the series ever broadcast. As written by Rod Serling, it is an intriguing episode, well played, as you stated, by Dan. Using my imagination perhaps a little too much, watching the early scenes in the episode in which Duryea is a former western fast draw, now turned town drunk, I can almost tell myself that this is what might have happened to Dan's Waco Johnny Dean character from Winchester 73 (if he hadn't met up with Jimmy Stewart first, of course). When a young Martin Landau is tormenting Duryea in the episode's opening minutes, you just wish Duryea could briefly rematerialize himself as Waco Johnny in order to put this town punk in his place. Well, Serling's clever writing would have a variation on that anyway. The costumes they were wearing, for The Black Pirate and Sparrows, were, in fact, for films that would be considered to be peaks in both of their careers. James, I think we can probably both agree that when you have a little known film noir like Manhandled, even though the final product doesn't quite mesh, with a strong performance from Duryea and that memorable back alley scene we both mentioned, the film is well worth a visit.
