Mary Pickford Lost Film Discovered/ Mary Pickford Cocktail
TomJH replied to ThelmaTodd's topic in General Discussions
Thanks very much, Thelma Todd, for the links to the YT Pickford sites, as well as the reference to Mary's incredible business acumen. Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks were, of course, Hollywood's first royal couple. An invitation to Pickfair was the highest social compliment that could be extended to someone within the film community during the '20s. But it was far more than just inhabitants of the film world that went there, as well known politicians and dignitaries, as well as genuine royalty, strained to visit Doug and Mary on their 56m acre estate, as well. Among the guests were George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Edison, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Amelia Earhart, Albert Einstein, Charles Lindbergh, Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin, who considered Fairbanks his best friend. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. wrote much about his father and Mary in his autobiography, Salad Days. He related a moment of profound significance in their relationship which occured in 1916, at a time when the silent swashbuckling king had known Mary for about a year but was still married to Doug Jr.'s mother. Fairbanks and Pickford went for a ride in her limousine around Central Park on a very sad occasion just after the death of Doug Sr.'s mother. They were talking about his mother, of course, and at one moment Fairbanks finally broke down weeping, almost inconsolable in his grief. Mary did all that she could to comfort Fairbanks and, after he had regained his composure, they both noticed that the car clock had stopped. By their calculation the clock had stopped at the about the same moment at which Fairbanks had broken down in the car. Afterward the words "by the clock" had a special coded meaning between Doug and Mary, an expression which, when used by either of them over the years to come, would remind them of this tender emotional moment that they shared and, in turn, strengthen their relationship. In 1920 Mary and Doug would marry, travelling to London and Paris on their honeymoon where, as the most famous couple in the world, they were mobbed by the fans. Their glory days in popularity and on the screen would be from the late WWI years through the '20s. With the talkies both their careers would suffer, in spite of Pickford receiving an Oscar for Coquette. Fairbanks also had numerous affairs, some of them becoming public much to Mary's humilation, as she became a secret drinker. In January, 1936 they were divorced. Afterward, however, Fairbanks decided that Mary had been the "great love of his life," and he went through great efforts to try to court her all over again, visiting her at Pickfair where she still resided, taking her for rides in the country, as well as sending her letters of romantic devotion in which he pleaded with her for a second chance. Pickford, after all the pain she had gone through, however, combined with the public humiliation over his affairs, was determined that the Great Romance was over. Fairbanks fell in and out of depression over his failure to revive the relationship, and impulsively set sail on a luxury liner for Europe. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. had been with his father during this period, and had been taken by surprise with Doug Sr.'s sudden departure for Europe. Doug Jr. was at the Waldorf Towers, where his father had been staying, and was told that there was a Western Union telegram for his father, which had arrived early that morning and had been overlooked, with his father departing not knowing of its arrival. Doug Jr. nonchalantly opened the telegram. It was from Mary Pickford, saying, words to the effect "All is forgiven . . . Let us be together again . . . forever." Doug Jr. immediately tried to contact his father on the ship to get him the news. After a frustrating hour to contact the ship and even more time to get his father on the luxury liner, he gave Fairbanks the news of Mary's telegram. His father, however, refused to believe him, accusing him of lying. Doug Jr. pleaded with him to then call Mary himself if he doubted him. His father's response was to hang up the phone. Shortly afterward, Fairbanks flew to Paris with an English socialite he had been courting for some time, Sylvia Ashley, where they were married. Three years later Fairbanks suffered a sudden, unexpected heart attack. The day following the attack he had a tone of urgency as he asked his brother to give Mary a particular message if anything happened to him. That evening he succumbed. The next morning, with the world waking up to the news that the great Douglas Fairbanks was dead, his brother contacted Mary by phone. Mary Pickford then received her last message from Douglas Fairbanks. It was three words - "By the clock." Upon hearing those words Pickford was silent. Soon afterward, however, she made the following statement to the press, "He passed from our mortal life quickly and spontaneously as he did everything else in life, but it is impossible to believe that vibrant and gay spirit could ever perish." -
James, your having mentioning 1949's Manhandled earlier in the thread reminded me that I had an old TCM recording of the film, which I watched today for the first time. It's a minor crime drama, to be sure, but Dan Duryea is the best thing about it, as a slimy (and that word really does apply to his character in this film) private eye. Even though he's third billed, the story really revolves around his character (or lack of character). The highlight moment of the film, for me, is a visually great film noir scene, set in a big city back alley at night, with Duryea, busy chewing on a stick of gum, as he cold bloodedly steers a car after a hapless victim running from him down that alley. There's a wonderful overhead crane shot with the lights of skyscrapers in the backdrop as the car bobs and weaves after its terrified victim. Of course, in the true tradition of film noirs, the back alley's pavement has the reflection of the fresh rained upon look for which the genre is remembered. And when the scene ends, Duryea's still chewing his gum. Got to love that Dan! I felt a little sorry for Dorothy Lamour in the film, though. Her career was in its doldrum years, and she looked quite drab, I thought, in a rather colourless role as a Duryea victim. But I think that fans of Dan will still enjoy watching him as a true big city snake in this Paramount feature. Andy, I'm shocked, SHOCKED (!!!), to see that picture of you with your girlfriend. Because here's a picture of me with mine: . . . the little minx!

Has anyone seen this film? I don't know if the film's any good but I love this poster: Another Dan Duryea film that I would like to see on TCM. Any wild guesses as to whether Dan is the killer or the cop? I will be soooo disappointed if he is the cop.
-
Here's a 1947 shot of that brute Dan Duryea at home, threatening violence upon his wife and kids: Hmmmm, how comes no one seems to be taking him seriously? Maybe he was only a movie tough guy. Here's another photo of Dan showing his family one of his scripts. They seem to be having a pretty good laugh over it and I don't recall Dan appearing in that many comedies.

I have loaned a few films from my library, lavenderblue. Their selection of classic films, though, is rather limited. The chances of finding a little title like Too Late for Tears is quite slim, compared to, say, The Wizard of Oz. At least, that's the case in my city library system. You may have a far more classic film friendly library system where you live. If so, that's great for you.

Thanks for the James Best anecdote, mrroberts. Now there's a face that most film buffs (particularly western) will recognize even if that can't put a name to it. I didn't know that Best appeared in a brief role (or roles) in Winchester 73. I do recall him from, among other films, another Jimmy Stewart western made almost 20 years later, Firecreek. In that one he had a large part as one of Henry Fonda's bandit gang that invades Stewart's small town. Too bad you didn't get a chance to get a Waco Johnny Dean anecdote from him. It would have been fun for Best if he could have been a part of Waco Johnny's gang in Winchester 73 (until slimy Dan ran out on him, that is).
-
lavenderblue, I fully agree with you that YouTube is the LAST way that I would want to watch a film. The one problem with your library suggestion for a specific title, however, is that there is no guaranty that it will be there. Sometimes you just have to resort to YT.
-
James, as lavenderblue noted, Too Late for Tears is available on You Tube, but no guaranty as to the quality of the image. Some of the outdoor night scenes are so black there's only dialogue to hear. I love Duryea in this film, though, while Lizabeth Scott has never been better. Here's one YouTube version of it but there are others if you care to fish around:
-
mrroberts, Waco Johnny Dean in Winchester 73 is such an unmitigated murdering scoundrel but you just have to love him because Dan Duryea is clearly having so much fun playing this egotistical amoral gun slinging western badman who has loyalty to no one except himself. And Duryea does have charm in the role, too, along with that smug smirk of his. SPOILER ALERT: Duryea also has one of the great western death scenes in Winchester 73, as well.
-
If that's the case, James, then thanks for the correction. I KNOW, however, that Too Late for Tears has not been on. Nor The Underworld Story.
-
Of those Duryea titles that you referenced, the two that I believe have not been shown on TCM are Too Late for Tears and Criss Cross. It would be nice to see them, particularly a good print (if there is one) of the former. Thanks to clore's review, another Duryea film I'd love to see come on that I've never seen is The Underworld Story, a tale of the newspaper trade which has been compared to Ace in the Hole. Now for this one I DO have TCM hopes because the film is available through the Warners Archive Collection. Duryea plays a mercenary newsman (what else?).Among other things, Undercover Story has one of Howard Da Silva's final performances before becoming a victim of the blacklist. >What we need now is a little Joel McCrea type of campaign for Dan Duryea to get a night of films. January 23rd is his birthday, maybe its not too late to get a mini tribute scheduled (TCM programmers are you listening, please?) It's a lovely thought. And Dan Duryea is every bit as deserving of a one day tribute as many others who have received it on TCM, in my opinion. The positive response to Duryea on this thread shows that, to a lot of TCM fans, at least, he is NOT forgotten. The problem is, so relatively few of his films ever come on the channel. A one day tribute would go a little way to rectifying this.

>From what I have read about James Cagney he could be a very amicable man to work with but he would not tolerate being disrespected by anyone and would make that very clear. That's the impression that I have of Cagney, as well, mrroberts. He was very much his own man. Without wanting to dwell upon the negative, it's a bit disheartening that when Cagney's health problems were increasingly catching up with him in his final years he had to surrender some of that fierce independence. He fell under the influence of Marge Zimmerman, a friend who became a caretaker, who, I believe, was also making financial decisions for him, as well. And there are those who have questioned just how positive Zimmerman was for Jimmy towards the end. My knowledge about this final period of Jimmy's life is quite sketchy, however, I fully admit. As for John Ford, it is well documented that this great filmmaker could also be a terrible son of a b---h who liked to find scapegoats on his film sets.

With Mister Roberts playing on TCM this evening, it's interesting to report that James Cagney had an initially testy relationship with director John Ford at the start of this film, in spite of the fact that they had previously gotten along with each other while making What Price Glory? three years before. According to Wikipedia, Cagney was surprised when Ford met him at the airport the day prior to the cameras starting to roll, informing the actor that they would "tangle ****" during production. Cagney later said, "I would have kicked his brains out. He was so goddamned mean to everybody. He was a nasty old man." The day after the airport meeting, Cagney showed up slightly late on the set and Ford began to go into a rant. Cagney immediately confronted him. "When I started this you said we were going to tangle **** before this was over," the actor reported saying, "I'm ready now - are you?" Ford walked away, and there would be no battle royal between them, but Cagney was clearly not a fan of the man. Of course, there would be a punch thrown during the making of this film. There are various stories as to what happened that resulted in Ford's replacement on the film as director by Mervyn LeRoy. It's my understanding, however, that Ford struck Henry Fonda when the two had a difference in interpretation over either a scene or Robert's character. Ford and Fonda, who had made so many wonderful films together, didn't speak to one another for years afterward.

>Also the stunning Elaine Devry is present and I never knew (until a few minutes ago) that she was married to Mickey Rooney. Of course who wasn't married to Mickey at one time or another? I believe Art Carney was able to avoid falling under Mickey's spell.

clore, I'm glad that Too Late for Tears is apparently going to receive a restoration. If memory serves me correctly, Eddie Muller made reference to this when he was communicating with us last summer on that Noir thread of misswonderly's. (At least, I think he did). And I agree with you that it is Lizabeth Scott's film. It's fascinating to watch her turn the tables on Dan Duryea, who also delivers a very strong performance in a characterization that does not turn out to be quite what viewers used to seeing him slap Joan Bennett around might be expecting from him.
-
RMeingast, thanks very much for all the links for Duryea fans.

Thanks very much for the personal anecdote, clore. It's nice to know that Dan didn't really shoot people in the back. Here is the June 8, 1968 obituary of Duryea from the New York Times: New York Times, NY June 08, 1968 DAN DURYEA DIES TOUGHNESS STIRRED FAN MAIL --- IN REAL LIFE, HE AIDED COMMUNITY ACTIVITES HOLLYWOOD, June 7 (AP) --- Dan Duryea, famed for his movie and television portrayals of the heel with sex appeal, died today. He was 61 years old. Mr. Duryea, who had undergone surgery for a malignancy several months ago, was pronounced dead at his hilltop home. He had collapsed in his bathroom. According to a preliminary autopsy report, the actor died of cancer. Mr. Duryea's wife, Helen Bryan, died of a heart ailment in 1967. The had two sons, Peter, an actor, and Richard, a talent manager now touring with the Beach Boys, a singing group. A funeral service will be held 12:30 P.M. Monday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. TWO DIFFERENT WORLDS Six-foot one-inch tall, slim, blond and blue-eyed, Dan Duryea made a fortune by allowing Hollywood to typecast him as a movie villain. In his 28 years in Hollywood, he made more than 60 motion pictures and 75 television shows, in the vast majority of which he played unsavory characters. Most recently, he was seen in the role of Eddie Jacks, the wandering confidence man in television's nighttime soap opera, "Peyton Place." As movie publicity agents loved to point out, Mr. Duryea's real-life personality was quite the opposite from the one he displayed in films. He was soft-spoken, a dedicated father and family man who went out of his way to correct his professional image in his private activities. He lived a quiet life, devoting himself to gardening, boating and community activities that included, at various times, active membership in the local parent-teacher association and command of a Boy Scout troop. Mr. Duryea was born Jan. 23, 1907, in White Plains, where he attended high school. He majored in English at Cornell University and in his senior year succeeded Franchot Tone as president of the college drama society. He did not turn to acting professionally, however, until six years after his graduation. CLASSMATE OF KINGSLEY When he first got out of college, Mr. Duryea worked as a space salesman for an advertising firm in New York and Philadelphia. After being bedridden for almost a year following a heart attack, he decided to go into the theater as a comparatively easy way to make a living. Through Sidney Kingsley, a Cornell classmate, Mr. Duryea obtained a walk-on role in Mr. Kingsley's "Dead End" for $40 a week. During that play's long Broadway run, the actor worked up to a featured role that led, in turn, to roles in "Stepping Sisters," "Many Mansions," Missouri Legend" and "The Little Foxes." When Samuel Goldwyn bought the screen rights to the Lillian Hellman play in 1940, he brought Mr. Duryea to Hollywood to recreate the role of Leo, the sniveling nephew of the greedy Hubbard family. The actor never again appeared on Broadway. He quickly gained a reputation with the public as a tough guy with a penchant for beating up women, a penchant that many female patrons apparently translated into sex appeal. He told a reporter once that "my fan mail goes up everytime I tee off on a girl." His salary went up, too, and in 1948 it was reported that he was earning more that $100,000 a year. Among the films in which he displayed this antisocial bent were "Woman in the Window," Scarlet Street," "The Whip," "Johnny Stool Pigeon" and "Along Came Jones." CONVINCING AS BLACKMAILER Bosley Crowther, then film critic for The New York Times, wrote of his performance in "Woman in the Window," released in 1945, that "Dan Duryea is so good in the role of the blackmailer that you feel like actually hissing him." The star occasionally attempted sympathetic roles, as in "Sahara" in 1943, with Humphrey Boagrt, and "Battle Hymn," in 1957, with Rock Hudson, but these performances were never particularly popular with the public. Mr. Duryea's acting style was not subtle, but it was always disciplined. His trademark was a tight-lipped vocal delivery of lines that were often punctuated with a sneer. Of his role in "Thunder Bay," a 1957 drama of offshore oil digging in which he co-starred with James Stewart, he said with some awe: "I'm legal and almost likable this time." When his sons were young, the actor did not allow them to see his films, explaining, "I don't want them to get any wrong ideas." In 1952, he had his own TV show, "The Adventures of China Smith," which ran for 26 episodes. Another set of 26 was made in 1955 under the title of "The New Adventures of China Smith." His last films included "River of Dollars," "Five Golden Dragons," "The Bamboo Saucer" and "Flight of the Phoenix." (This comes from the Dan Duryea Central Website)

A dialogue exchange between Dan Duryea and Shelley Winters in *Winchester 73*: DURYEA (smirking): What was I saying? WINTERS: You were talking about yourself. DURYEA: Where did I stop? WINTERS: You didn't. But you can now. I already know about Waco Johnny Dean, the fastest gun in Texas. DURYEA (feigning insult): Texas? Lady, why limit me? And, yet, from another Duryea western, *Ride Clear of Diablo*, an exchange with Audie Murphy: MURPHY (handing Duryea his gun in a holster): Well, this is as far as I go. Here's your gun. DURYEA (checking his gun and pointing it at Murphy): It's loaded. MURPHY: Wouldn't do you much good empty. DURYEA: Listen, kid, you're talking to Whitey Kincade. Nobody hands me loaded guns. I shoot people in the back. When Duryea had good dialogue, his oily charm added so much to the delivery.

Fly, I have to admit that I think Duryea gets lost among that ensemble cast in Flight of the Phoenix. He doesn't have a very strong role there, I'm afraid. At least, that's my take on it. You may feel differently. It was a reunion, of sorts, though, with Jimmy Stewart, his co-star from better days for both of them, Winchester 73. There now, now I'm getting all teary eyed just thinking about what a great western rat that Waco Johnny Dean was. Now THAT was a screen villain with charm combined with ruthlessness. When our Dan was bad, he was very very good.

>Does this suggest that hispanics were considered more acceptable than other races when it came to the subject of intimate relationships and intermarriage with whites? I think the answer to that question is a screamingly affirmative YES!!! Thanks very much for the interesting historical perspective on the subject, TopBilled. Obviously having Caucasian actresses like Elizabeth Taylor and Yvonne de Carlo playing half castes in relationships with Caucasians was Hollywood's way of gingerly, incrementally approaching and dealing with miscegenation. When it came to the then screamingly touchy subject of relations between a black man played by a black actor and a white girl played by a Caucasian, it looks like it wasn't until Guess Who's Coming in 1967 that that huge barrier was finally broken down. Even then there were obvious compromises to make it more palatable for some white audiences by making Sidney Poitier's character pretty well perfect. -

>A film that might answer your question is the 1957 Sayonara Brando and Miiko Taka make it clear in the end that they will be married, regardless of what others may think. Thanks very much, lavenderblue. Maybe you just got the answer. I'm not familiar with the two Ricardo Montalban films but Neptune's Daughter was a 1949 release, considerably earlier than The Long Long Trailer. It's also interesting that they are both "light" entertainments. I assume, therefore, that there is little reference to race in the screenplays. I don't recall Sayonara particularly well. But perhaps it was the first serious Hollywood production to have a happy ending for a racially mixed couple. I guess it wasn't until Guess Who's Coming to Dinner that a Hollywood production did address the highly flammable issue of relations between blacks and whites, and provide a happy resolution for the couple at the end. -

I think Top Billed made a very valid observation. After all, Desi was Hispanic. Isn't it fascinating, though. There you have audiences accepting the fact that a popular show business couple are racially mixed, and are watching them in a couple of films together, as well as their television series. At the same time, however, if The Long Long Trailer is the first film to portray a racially mixed couple with a "happy ending," why did it take so darned long for another Hollywood production to come along and do the same? I suppose that Lucy and Desi broke a taboo barrier at the movies at the time regarding miscegenation without any big commotion being made about it because, after all, they were already a well known real life couple. They also broke that barrier in a "light entertainment" which, I suppose, made it easier to deal with. And, let's not forget, these two stars were very, VERY popular. Assuming that The Long Long Trailer was, indeed, the first to break the barrier, why did it take so long before a non-Lucy and Desi film would followup on it. (To me, it sort of indicates that no one gave it all that much thought at the time). I'm not certain, since I'm vague on the movie, whether A Majority of One was the next film to break the barrier. Again, I have the impression that the ending of the film was rather vague as for the future of the racially mixed couple. If Majority of One does NOT qualify, can anyone think of another film before Guess Who's Coming to Dinner that does? -
mrroberts, that Dan Duryea Central website is advertising a Waco Johnny Dean doll for sale. That much of a fan of the character I'm not, but perhaps a few others are. It also shows the pages from a 1950 comic book version of Duryea's Underworld Story, which clore reviewed earlier on this thread (and which the website's creator calls one of Dan's greatest roles): The character on the left is clearly supposed to be Duryea By the way, that same Duryea website provides links under the TV section of his career by which you can watch a few of the shows that Danny Boy appeared on (ie. Wagon Train, for example) Here's the link to the website once again: http://danduryeacentral.blogspot.ca/
