  1. In the MST3K version during the performance of Scuba Party, Crow says "Little Richard! The only genuine talent in the film!" I thought it was one of the best parts of the movie when he sang and everyone broke into go go dance mode. This movie is so rediculous and fun that its one of my favorite beach party films. Definetily enriched my weekend.

    > Haven't watched the MST3K version of "Catalina Caper" yet, but I recorded the broadcast. Thanks for the info that Mary Wells (!) sang under the titles because I wouldn't have guessed. It was heaven watching Little Richard sing "Scuba Party". That man was never out of his element; he was his own element. The number was actually great, with the best go-go dancing in the whole film. It made my weekend, so thanks for the heads-up.

  2. > {quote:title=clore wrote:}{quote}I remember seeing THE STRANGER (a TV movie with Glenn Corbett) and a couple of Monogram films with Lugosi, and that was it. It's not so much the idea of it that I object to, plenty of times my buddies and I would get together and with some form of mind altering assistance, be it Boone's Farm or something else, we'd rip on some films and have a grand time.

Haha we used to do that too. Sometimes the volume would be too low on the television and no one wanted to get up and walk all the way over to it and adjust the dial so we'd end up just sitting there watching a program with the sound off, "dubbing" in our own stupid or funny dialogue hahaha. The good ol days.

  3. Have you ever seen Horror of Party Beach MST3K? Not that funny. I'd rather just watch the film than have them take up a quarter of the screen and talk through the whole movie.

However, I did think this segment from MST3K Catalina Caper was funny, its called "Joel Remembers the 60s".

  4. > {quote:title=clore wrote:}{quote}Anytime that you see the name Ted V. Mikels attached to a film - in any capacity - you know you're bound for either boredom or unintended laughs.

Yeah I must admit he's no Laszlo Kovacs, but the cinematography is decent enough for a beach party film. I didn't find Caper boring I thought it was a fun movie, definetely full of unintentional camp. Tommy Kirk makes it a cult classic. Shown in its original uncut commercial free form, and without the Mystery Science Theatre 3000 puppets yapping through the whole movie lol. Thanks TCM! Later tonight they're showng Alice B Toklas and Alice's Restaurant too. What a great night for movies.

  5. Anyone else planning on watching Catalina Caper tomorrow morning?

Catalina Caper (also known as Never Steal Anything Wet) is a 1967 comedy musical mystery film starring Tommy Kirk. It is one of the last (if not the last) in the beach party film genre. This entry blends the beach format with a standard crime-caper comedy. It was shot on and around Santa Catalina Island, California. The film was also featured in the second season of the movie-mocking television show Mystery Science Theater 3000.

here's the link to the MST3K version of the film. Its pretty hilarious:

    Plot

An ancient Chinese scroll is stolen from a museum in Los Angeles and teenage Don Pringle (Kirk) arrives on Catalina Island simultaneously. Although approximately half of the film involves swimsuit-clad adolescents dancing on yachts in several different dance montages, Pringle and his friends investigate the scroll's theft and discover that the parents of one of the boys is responsible —also while attempting to woo a mysteriously depressed young woman Katrina Corelli (Ulla Strömstedt) from her vaguely threatening boyfriend Angelo (Lyle Waggoner). After wrestling the scroll away from Angelo and his cohorts, bent on more dangerous results (in an underwater scuba diving action scene), the boys secretly return the scroll to the museum to the relief of the repentant parents.

    Production notes

Both Never Steal Anything Wet and Scuba Party were titles planned for the film, before the makers decided on Catalina Caper (see Music section below). Tommy Kirk appeared in four other films in the beach party genre: Village of the Giants (1965); two AIP features, Pajama Party (1965) and The Ghostinthe Invisible Bikini (1966); and It's a Bikini World (1967).

    Music

The composer for this film, Jerry Long, also wrote the music for another beach party film, Wild Wild Winter. Both films are his only onscreen credits. Long also wrote two songs for the film, "Never Steal Anything Wet," heard over the opening/closing credits and performed by Mary Wells; and "Scuba Party," performed onscreen by Little Richard, who is also credited as a co-writer on the song. The Cascades perform "There's a New World," written by Ray Davies. Carol Connors performs "Book of Love," which was written by Connors and Roger Christian.

Are you thinking of Sugar Hill?

The Fat Spy (1966) is a mind-blowingly bad beach party parody starring Jack E. Leonard in the title role, along with Phyllis Diller, hard-drinking character actor Brian Donlevy, pop singer Johnny Tillotson ("Poetry in Motion," "Gidget"), and features '50s sex siren Jayne Mansfield as "Junior."

Jayne sings in this one, as does co-star Jordan Christopher, and The Wild Ones, a great '60s garage band who did the theme song for Lord Love a Duck, also released in '66.

In 2003, The Fat Spy was honored as one of the 50 Worst Movies Ever Made in the documentary of the same name. Actually, it was number 46. Now these kind of lists are entirely subjective, and I could easily name a dozen other films that are even worse than The Fat Spy, but suffice to say that this movie was not considered for the American Film Institute's 100 Greatest Films of All Time. Here it is in its entirety:

  9. Did anyone see the Don Rickles interview on the Late Show with David Letterman a couple nights ago? One of the first things Dave asks him about is the Beach Party films, Don's reaction is hilarious! Here's the whole episode. Skip ahead to (15:40) and tough it out through the commercials and you can watch the entire interview. Its worth it.

Oh thats cool, I was wondering if just because a movie was full screen whether or not it would be classified as pan n scan. I can clearly see the difference now.. Beach Ball is definitely pan n scan, all close up and awkward looking. Girls on the Beach looks fine, its just full screen. Ride the Wild Surf is full screen too, but it doesn't look like pan n scan.

  11. The Girls on the Beach was pan-and-scan as well. I'd prefer the widescreen format, but with these rare films I'll take what I can get! Another highlight of the film for me was Brian Wilson sitting by the shore surrounded by beach girls as he sang The Lonely Sea. If you didn't catch it the other night here's the only clip of it I could find: http://youtu.be/AFtJPhWnX1g

Last night Ben took us to the ski slopes for the final night of the festival, showing Ski Party, Winter a Go-Go, and Get Yourself A College Girl! Anyone else happen to catch these flicks? Lotta fun and good music, especially the latter featuring the Animals, Dave Clark Five, Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto.

I really enjoyed the entire Spring Break Festival this week. Thanks TCM, for taking this loyal viewer down memory lane..

    Flex: I'm the strongest.

    Contessa: And so handsome.

    Flex: I'm the handsomest.

    Contessa: And so big.

    Flex: Yes, ma'm.

Contessa: I want to be alone with you.

Flex: Did you see this tricep?

Contessa: I want to take you away with me.

Flex: The way I can make it ripple?

    Contessa: Right now.

Flex: I haven't had my lunch!

:^0 Gotta love the lineup tonight, all the Frankie and Annette movies in one evening! Followed by both Dr Goldfoot movies!! Only on TCM. Anyone else enjoying the Spring Break lineup as much as me? My DVR is wore out! I haven't seen most of these flicks in so long. I think Ben has been doing an excellent job hosting the past few nights with Tom Lisanti giving interesting facts and tidbits about each film. How about Beach Ball last night, featuring the Supremes singing Surfer Boy with Diana Ross sportin' the Annette hair-do. Or the Girls on the Beach, featuring excellent performances by the Beach Boys and Lesley Gore. If you didn't catch it last night, here's a video featuring music highlights from the film, my personal favorites are the title track by the Beach Boys and It's Gotta Be You by Lesley Gore:

..And speaking of Muscle Beach Party, how about Annette's bikini.. hubba hubba!

I don't know about the rest of you gremmies and ho-dads, but I am thoroughly enjoying TCM's Spring Break lineup of beach and surf movies! Just last night it was Elvis catching waves in Blue Hawaii and racing speed boats in Clambake, and tonight I watched Fabian and Jim Mitchum battle the Waimea Bay (and each other) in Ride the Wild Surf. This is TCM at its best!

Ben Mankiewicz is doing a good job hosting the last couple nights while Robert Osborne is on spring break hangin ten!
